Today is cycle 3 of 0.25 units. So far, so good!

ETA - Vet called last night with Gizmo’s free T4 number. It is slightly high and he was diagnosed with hyperT. We will start him on Methimazole 2.5mg twice a day tonight. In a month we are going to recheck his thyroid, kidney, and the protein in his urine.

She mentioned to keep a very close eye on his BG because by treating the hyperT his insulin needs could drop. I’m wondering how fast this might happen? He doesn’t have far to go! Even mentioned that he might very well come off the insulin! *fingers and paws crossed*

You might also ask your vet to check his kidney function. It's probably fine, but Hyper-T can mask kidney problems. I have no idea why, but it does. At any rate, once the thyroid is back to functioning normally, if there were any kidney problems they will emerge.

When my civvie was DX with Hyper T, on recommendation of Marje and Gracie, she said it's old school to start kitties at 2.5 mgs twice a day but rather start them at 1/4 of the tablet twice a day ( or 2.5 a day) and see where the levels are when you take them back for new BW. It's easier to go up in dose if needed than to throw kitty in Hypo thyroid and having to back track. I listened to her and when I took Forrest back in 3 weeks his BW was perfect! He was square in the middle of the normal range. Just this week we had to increase him a tiny bit after being on the Methimazole for a year.

Yum had slightly high thyroid numbers a few years back. I didn't want to give her medicine for something I wasn't sure she had. By the time I researched the options for the fancy test and radiation treatment, her numbers were back to normal. They have been normal since then. Just something to make every decision complicated...

Mandy, just curious, how long did it take for the T4 levels to get stable again?
I saw you said Forrest have been on methimazole for a year. That's not long! Tanner's thyroid (T4) was watched for about 4 years because it was high before he had some FORLS removed then it was normal again. But it creeped up until it got to 6.6 and it was time for meds. After only 3 weeks of 2.5 mg BID, it dropped to 0.6. I immediately went down to 1.25 mg BID and it was good at something like 2.2 after 3 weeks. So it didn't take long to impact the thyroid either way.

I re-read this and I have to ask - what was the total T4? I'm now wondering if meds is truly necessary if the tT4 is still in high 2's or low 3's.

I agree with starting at 1.25 mg twice a day. Stu had Hyper T and his vet at the time started him on 2.5 mg twice a day. But I chose to listen to the people here and gave 1.25 mg. Stu's Hyper T was masking his CKD, which was much worse than we thought. We had hoped to have the I-131 treatment, but it was not to be. By the time he got to Hypurrcat he was too weak to have the treatment (he had multiple health issues).

Sending lots of vines to Gizmo for successful treatment.
