Yesterday I was in a panic because Ravan's bg dropped from 488am to 162 pm 326 pts Tonight Ravan's bg is way up again 442. I don't understand. Why do you suppose it's jumping up & down like that? He ate good this morning but now turns his head away what ever I offer him? Well just now He did eat sardines! I think he's getting hooked on Fish! (no pun intended!)

That's just because he's "bouncing".....Bounces happen because they 1. drop too low 2. drop too quickly 3. drop lower than their body is used to (or a combination of all 3)

In Ravan's case, his body has become used to living in those higher numbers, so dropping into what is a "normal" number (or even a lower one like 162) feels wrong to his body and his liver releases stored sugars and hormones to bring him back up to where it's "used to" being......he "bounces"

It can take up to 6 cycles (3 days) for those hormones and sugars to clear back out of his body, so we don't want to increase just because he's in a bounce.

As his body re-learns that it's OK to be in those better numbers, he'll hopefully stop bouncing as high and when he does bounce, he'll clear them faster

It's totally normal and in some ways it's good....at least you know his liver is in good working order!

Chris,I appreciate your info so much! I've been trying to read as much of what's posted & all the information but I think I reached "Overload" I slept till 9am! Good thing Ravan woke me for his bg test. I feel so worn out! His bg was 442 last nite 353 at 3:30am & now 390 9am.a bit better than yesterday.Maybe it's "slowly " coming down?

I need to make sure I'm doing his spreadsheet correctly. shot at 9pm & check bg at 3am (even though it's am ) I write the 3am bg in the 6 hr. pm box Is that correct?

I don't think I've stopped by until now, so welcome to the group!

If you shoot at 9:00 and check Ravan's BG at 3:00, that is +6 in Lantus-speak. It looks correct on your spreadsheet (SS). I hope this is a workable schedule for you. (I know I wouldn't want to be testing at 3 AM but that's me!) Also, it will help if you can get a couple of spot checks in at more random times. Not every cat's nadir is at +6 -- or even toward the middle of the cycle. Some cats have early or late nadirs. My kitty's nadir was at +3 except for those cycles when it wasn't. Nadirs can and do move around.

Feeling completely overwhelmed by all of the information is absolutely normal. There's a huge volume of information to learn. The people here are very generous with their time and information and we'll do our best to answer your questions.

Thanks Sienne, I'll try to check his bg more often during the day. When he's sleeping I hate to wake him. I test at 3am because that's when he wakes me and Again at 5am?? What to do when they want food at those hours? This is new since he's been sick. I try saying no & going back to sleep but he's very persistent & gets his sister involved Peggy Sue ! I just get up & feed them! They control me!!! Just a while ago I had a Vet. online say it's very unusual for a 15 yr old cat,fed raw meat all his life to be diagnosed with Diabetes. He thinks it's a pancreatic tumor! I will be devastated if it's that!

Hi Sharon, He's eating but small amounts usually in the early morning. Did you read what I posted to Sienne. I'm worried sick that he might have a tumor!

My cats diabetes is caused by a tumor on his pituitary. He had to have special bloodwork done to diagnose it. Did the vet tell you what test was needed? Maybe you should talk to your vet about it.

I need to know if it's a pancreatic tumor what can they do. I do NOT want to put him thru all that stress & pain if there's nothing to be done!
Sharon, what can they do about the pituitary tumor?
