Hi everyone ...I have been on emotional rollercoaster for a bit here because I have been told if Bubbles wont eat it is not due to diabetes but to some underlying condition (shes 17)...I have taken her in twice now to be put to sleep and twice been talked into trying other things....I cannot force feed her and vets said simply treating her inappetance without confirming a diagnosis is not enough....yesterday i was told she may have low appetite because of the actual diabetes STILL untreated (ten days after being diagnosed)!!! No other vet out of SIX told me THIS!!That is why i decided to take her in this am for the curve test and begin insulin....was told by vet i can give her insulin entirely depending on her bg glucometer reading twice a day even with little food in her...I am fifty yrs old and have yet to meet a challenge like this due to completely opposing opinions...HELP!!
 
The hardest part of this IS the differing opinions. You kind of have to stick with the vet that you trust the most, the one that makes the most sense. Use your gut judgment, because they all have varying ways of doing things. My cat has an underlying issue also, and doesn't always want to eat, or eats half his food. Maybe they can give some appetite stimulants a try? If kitty doesn't eat anything at all, I wouldn't give insulin. Has she started insulin yet?

hi sean and rufus...thank u for the speedy reply...bubbles is in hospital getting glucose curve today so i am assuming the vet will be putting her on insulin immediately which is her only option...and if i cant get her to eat it will be devestating ...I know what the end result of this will be...I am praying for a miracle...such as she has lost her appetite DUE to diabetes which counters everything i have heard except for one vet who did give me some hope saying her appetite might increase with insulin...its a long shot but her geri panel...pancreatitis test...and xrays came up all good...I hope it isnt a grave underlying issue but unfortunately I will have to considrr this ...he is going to put her on prozinc....(refuses any other kind of insulin treatment)
 
My kitty wouldn't eat either. You always hear that kitties have big appetite when they have diabetes, but many many vets told me that's not always true. Case in point Rufus. Maybe they give some cerenia or ondansteron or mirtzapine(?) for an appetite stimulant? Best of luck!
 
Sean and Rufus...that is so encouraging to hear...OMG. ..I thank you for that...I will ask for a stimulant ....cerenia instantly made poor bubbles throw up...is there a different anti nausia med you know of? Is Rufus nauseated?
 
I had to hand feed my cat for 2 weeks after diagnosis. It was time consuming and frustrating, but now her appetite is back with a vengeance.

Edit: I found it helped to mash her wet food up with water to make it soupy for her to lick up. Also got the first weeks I had to literally take a small piece of wet food, roll it into a tiny ball, and put it on the floor in front of her to get her to eat. Rinse repeat.

Good question! We're still working on an answer for that. Been on and off with appetite since August. He might have IBD and or food allergies that are causing it. We might do a biposy soon to make sure it's not somethiung worse. I've spent over $4000 on him since August :( But he is getting better!

In my case my girl was very dehydrated and had ketones days after diagnosis (very bad sign), and also may have some teeth issues causing pain. She also had diarrhea for a couple weeks. Poor girl.
 
Sometimes if their sugar is going up and down a lot it can cause a nausea type feeling. Humans get that too when they eat too much candy.

Getting the FD controlled helps keep the body in a more balanced state. There may be other issues as well but it looks like they covered all the obvious issues. How is her teeth?

Pepcid is good if they have an acidic tummy which will cause them to have a sore tummy. I use the freeze dried treats at night, help soak up some of that excess acid.


Cerenia or ondansteron is used for nausea itself and to help stop vomiting.

You can try cyproheptadine or mirtazapine for an appy stimulant.
