Hi everyone! Our civvie Akie has arthritis, and is on Adequan shots, Dasuquin, and fish oil. I'm giving her Dasuquin and Fish oil once a day as capsules (she does not like the Dasuquin sprinkled). Was curious if anyone gives it twice a day? Thanks.

Oh good I'm glad you are giving the adequan. You can probably do the dasuquin twice a day. You can also increase the frequency of the adequan shots of you need to. We give it once a week or else she limps.
 
Thank you, Janet NJ. Much appreciate the feedback. So far I'm not noticing a difference, so we might indeed need to up the medications -- will give it a month or two. How much adequan do you give and how much does your cat weigh? Our Akie is 15 years old and weighs 10.5 lb or so.

My cat is a big girl at 16 lbs so she gets 0.3 ml of adequan.
 
Started the A a week ago, at two shots of .2 ml a week. Yes: vet says twice a week for a month, then once a month.

Oh ok I thought you just started. I started seeing small results after 2 weeks, but much better after the initial 4 weeks. :). If after that she’s not quite there you can see about giving it more frequently than 1 time a month.

Really appreciate the input, JanetNJ. Keeping fingers crossed! Did you also give fish oil? And did you get xrays? (I haven't yet, but am considering). Akie is otherwise the picture of health :) and purringness and playfulness.

Didn't do x-rays.... Tried fish oil for awhile before the adequan but she hated it. I tried a few different brands /types. Wanted no part of it.

Thank you for tagging Jayla and also for your response. Akie hated the fish oil too -- I now give it as a capsule, which she's actually relatively good with.

Yes I love adequan... I give it 1x a week my boys are 19 and 20 this summer and they literally run 4 flights of stairs LOL --I was chasing Rico my 20 yr old tonight he finally jumped on the bed!
In the winter (Chicago) I have given every 4 days if it is brutal outside, I am all about prevention. Many vets think monthly is enough--I disagree (as does my vet) depending on age and condition. We started years ago and 1x a month was ok but as they age I found more often was a very noticeable difference.
Dre is 19/20# he gets .04ml and Rico get .03 he is about 13/14 # (we round up)

The dasaquan I have been using 1x a day and started fairly recently, my guess would be a loading dose may be needed for the dasaquan and then you can drop back it is usually a month. If you notice symptoms I would then go back to 2. (This is the dog rec as well)

For reference adequan has chondroitin and glucosamine and dasaquan has chondroitin but NO glucosamine.
Neither has MSM tho which is baffling.
I am about to add pure MSM (for the boys 19-20) -- I don't know why they don't have dasaquan with msm for cats like they do dogs but the place I got it from is so pure and amazing customer service with a vet on staff who responded in detail regarding my CKD cat-

I am using on my CKD cat for inflammation but it works wonders in dogs and it is the purest I have found.

I also give moxxor which is a small gel cap that is very concentrated-mine are all ok with pilling and I try to stuff it all in 1 or 2 gel caps.

I'm also going to try the MSM -- and am also going to add in a bit of turmeric in a capsule. It looks like that is good for arthritis in cats as well (I know its good for people). Do you do fish oil? I am so grateful I talked to you about this a few months ago. I have been giving cc a dose weekly, sometimes a second one a week if the weather makes her limpy, and it's made a huge difference. She looks brighter and happier, playing more, stairs are easier, less grumpy with the other cats, and I feel more muscle in her legs now that she's up and walking more.

I use moxxor which is a tiny gel cap that fits in the "everything" capsule
If you do look into Moxxor I would get it from the official company and be a preferred customer for the best price-I take it too-you can always stop.

For my CKD cat I make sure she is flooded with fish oil and B vits but she is tiny only 8 pounds or less (at least compared to the boys)
Mine will not eat it either--once in a while Dre will lick krill but not on a regular.
I go thru phases and give them what I feel is best for prevention and good senior years but a friend who has many different views than me reminded me to enjoy them.... one thing we for sure agree on. That being said I just gave Dasaquan and fluids before work;)
They always get adequan dasaquan and fluids--Rico gets other stuff too and we just added azodyl until next BW to see if kidneys are same or lower.

If you look into the MSM feel free to ask questions-they are a great company and if others want to try it might be worth sharing as it is a large amount. If you want to just try some PM me and I am happy to send you some.

Moxxor, my gosh, that is so very expensive and here you are offering samples :) what an angel you are!) but I would not dream of taking advantage of you like that :bighug:. Also, it looks like these things take a while to show benefits, so I might spring for them myself :). Last night I ordered this product on Amazon: VetriScience Laboratories GlycoFlex 3, Hip and Joint Supplement for Cats, 60 Bite Sized Chews, 4.23 oz. It looks like it has the Omega 3s (I need to do a more thorough check re amounts and what exactly it has) and MSM, and I'm hoping to give this to Akie in the mornings before rushing off for work and then the dasuquin etc in the evening. My mornings are kind of crazy already, lol, with testing and shooting Angel, and them OMG all the time it takes to get that fussbudget to eat enough, bless his little heart. Do you think such 'treats' would be less effective than actual medications delivered through capsules? Probably, huh...

I'm also considering starting our 16+ yo Ulta-Pulta on MSM and omegas, inspired by your preventative approach :). And yes, absolutely, enjoy our babies as long as we're lucky enough to have them with us :cat::):bighug:.

Thank you for the tip that giving adequan (and glucosamine) more often as needed would be okay. Such a relief. I don't know if I'm imagining it, but it seems as if Akie's limp is already better after just 3 shots of adequan and about a month of cosequin+fish oil. (I've now ordered dasuquin for the next bottle).

My vet had given these enormous syringes, but I've been seeing on this site that several people use insulin syringes (which I have stacks of because of Angel's diabetes) for the adequan -- that should be fine, right?

Many do use insulin syringes but to be honest I am not familiar enough to figure out the dosage.

I use a 1ml syringe and I personally like without needles because I am a bit anal and I switch the needle after drawing out the adequan. I LOVE terumo needles which I learned about on this forum. SOO much better than monoject (in my view). I find it super easy to dose with a 1ml-
Dre is almost 20 pounds so we doubt that to 40 and he gets 0.4 on a 1ml
My vet always rounds up so if he was 17 pounds he would still give same dose-


You are not imagining the limp being better-adequan should be required to be offered to anyone with a pet over 8 or who has had a injury. It frustrates me that so many pets just age with such pain only because nobody told them they could slow it tremendously.

The supplement you got I don't think will hurt but I have to tell you my CKD --- I was sure I was losing her not so long ago is doing AHHHH mazing.... that being said I cannot prove it is the msm but it is the newest change with the best results-I will wait a bit to say it is it for sure but she sure seems to be feeling better and she is only 12. She has no arthritis I can tell I am using it for inflammatory issues with the kidneys.
They say it has no taste but right now she has a strong aversion to wet food so I stick it in her capsule-

This site is wonderful---just 1 thing to remember is people have strong opinions regarding some topics-
I do believe they mean well but I have found for me it is best not to answer things that irritate me to no end-
no stupid questions just bad information by uninformed or doctors who just don't care.:bighug:

Jayla: as of the Nutramax site, Dasuquin does have glucosamine: "Dasuquin from Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences, Inc. is a joint health supplement for cats that goes beyond standard glucosamine supplements. I stand corrected.... I a not sure exactly why I thought that. Maybe just wondering why the MSM isn't in it like it is for dogs. Although I continue to be amazed at the progress my CKD kitty is having--I have even cut her fluids in 1/2 and she is eating and looks so good. :cat: Sorry for the mistake:oops:

Yay!!!:cat: Always such a relief. When mine get picky about wet food, I find that adding a sprinkling of Fortiflora makes them GOBBLE it up -- it has some kind of animal digest thing that they find irresistible! Also warming it a bit in the microwave (literally 8 seconds) before adding the Fortiflora helps waft the yummy smells around and makes the food really appetizing.
 
If both adequan and dasuquin have glucosamine, I'm guessing they should be given at different times of day? Thoughts on this, please? Thank you.
 
Adequan is not daily-
loading dose is a shot every 4 days for 8 shots then from 1 week to 1 month apart (I go 4 days sometimes if is a brutal winter)

Dasaquan every day...they say loading is 2 a day for a month then drop to 1 a day but I may continue with 2 if is working and they are in the golden years.

I don't think would be a issue regardless as they have so negative side effects that I have ever heard of and I doubt it is considered a large dose-many of my dog clients stay on 2 a day and get adequan weekly.

Mine are getting 2 dasaquan a day-adequan 1x a week and MSM 2x a day-and they are feeling good!:cat::cat:

I believe you are correct if dosing with a insulin syringe-
you have a small kitty.... I would have to use 2 insulin syringes for Dre lol--
he is 20# so he gets .4 on a 1ml syringe or 40 insulin units on a U100,:)

@Larry and Kitties is the expert on the dosing on a U100
 
FYI I got a new batch of forti flora and my shop cats absolutely HATES it!
Warmed food of any kind is no interest either she is on a dry kick but at least she is eating.

My boys will a least sniff it she looks like she smells something rotten and turns her head-

Maybe I will try again tomorrow -considering she is a cat!:confused:

I know Adequan is not daily :) -- am giving twice weekly for a month to begin with. It's just that I gave a shot this evening, and then it occurred to me that maybe -- on the days I give adequan -- I should give dasuquin in the afternoon or something so they don't overlap :).

Awww, sorry :(. My Angel ADORES fortiflora, thank goodness, although every now and then he goes off it for a day or two!
 
I am giving Dre and Rico 2 dasaquan for a month. I don't spread it out on adequan days I think they are ok with it-
I have to brag a bit about my Swamp at the shop--she is doing SO good-I m so glad I got this MSM from the holistic horse- I have cut her meds quite a bit and gone from 200sq to 100!! fingers n paws crossed!!:smuggrin::smuggrin::smuggrin::smuggrin::cat:

She is eating too! I do give her a teeny chip of mirtz...:cat:

Yay! Go Swamp! And Dre and Rico too :)! I just ordered turmeric chews for Akie. Fingers crossed! They're for dogs, but on Amazon the company twice says you can use them for cats too -- obvs I'll drastically reduce the amount given -- and I don't see any ingredient that might be problematic. Hope I'm not missing something!
