Hello everyone! After taking Pluto (11 yr old male cat) to the vet for a dental concern and realizing he'd lost 2lbs in under 4 months the vet recommended blood work. His glucose came back close to 600! He gets super stressed at the vets, so we did the fructosamine test next which confirmed his diabetes.
He had bad breath when I had taken him in October for his rabies vaccine so they gave him a shot of Convenia in case of infection. That seemed to do the trick for a few months but then his mouth was worse hence the return trip in February. They recommended a dental cleaning as we could finally see a bad abscess, one broken tooth, and another loose tooth (getting a look in his mouth was very difficult). The vet gave another shot of Convenia and we scheduled the dental work for the next week where he ended up having ALL canines pulled as well as a premolar and perhaps another tooth (so 5-6 teeth pulled in total).
We started him on 1 unit of ProZinc twice a day on Feb. 12th. The vet recommended the prescription wet food but said since he still had molars and had always eaten 100% dry food, he could do a mix of wet and dry. After finding this site, I started easing him off the dry food. He is now almost 100% Fancy Feast Classic Pates (he's gotten into some contraband dog kibble and the other cat's dry food recently).
I bought a ReliOn Micro the other day and I am now beginning the home testing process. So very thankful for this site! It's been such a relief reading other stories!
