2/28 Yum Kidney Failure/Seizure/HOME

One of my civvies (George) had a couple of seizures. He was an elderly can't and while it freaked me out, the vet wasn't overly concerned. You may want to ask the vet if they checked Yum's electrolytes. I'd also ask if this could be a side effect from the Convenia.

Reading through all the posts, my thoughts were the same as Stacy's -- it could be a kidney or or urinary track infection. You'r vet needs to do some continuing ed on the subject! I'm glad they have it diagnosed. I'm also glad you got Yum started on S. Boulardi.

Sending more vines that she continues to improve.

Jones had a seizure that they thought was a stroke. It happened once last summer. Nothing since. Nobody seemed too concerned. His BP was fine.

Paul @Bronx's dad once posted this quote from Chris at RVC

The main possible side effects of cabergoline are gastrointestinal (diarrhea, vomiting or reduced appetite), other side effects include increased insulin sensitivity and risk of low blood glucose if insulin is given without appropriate monitoring, ,mild sedation, and rare cases of excitability, fine muscle tremors and seizures have been reported, abortion in pregnant cats and dogs (the drug should not be handled by pregnant women), very rare cases of allergic reactions have occurred, such as swelling of the face or limbs, skin reddening and itching.

Neruological symptoms aren't that common, but the tumour can press against the brain. I've seen reference to mobility issues (walking in circles) or eye tremors. Also possible TIA or stoke.

Many get better vines on their way. :bighug::bighug:

Oh my! I am just catching up and I am so sorry to hear that Yum has been in the hospital. And so sorry abut the seizure and I pray it is an isolated event and not to return.

Sending lots of vines to you and Yum :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

She had her birthday in the hospital. :(
They say she can come home tomorrow.
Her creatinine was down to 2.8 this morning. They are weaning her off the fluids as her RBC and hematocrit are dropping.
They let her BG fall into the 30's this afternoon on a half a unit of Lantus. Not good. They gave her food then dextrose. She was acting normally.
I can't wait to get her home.

Thanks for the update, been thinking of Yum. So sorry she doesn't get to come home for her birthday. :( You'll just have to celebrate one day later. 2.8? Wow! :woot: That's amazing. Yikes on the 30s! Happy to hear she is acting normal. Did they give her a different antibiotic besides the convenia? I saw on your SS she had a normal poo last night, that's great news too! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I think she is on Baytril and maybe amphocycline. (Two on top of the convenia, but I haven't clearly understood the names. I don't think her urine culture has come back yet with sensitivity results.)
I've asked twice today for them to call the prescriptions into the compounding pharmacy so I can give them to her tomorrow as liquids. They haven't done it yet.
The pharmacy lectured me the last time I requested overnight delivery.
I assume I will also have to give her subq's for a few days.
I so want her home.

So happy to hear Yum is well enough to come home. I think we all know that awful feeling when our fur babies are sick and I think we all relive that feeling of dread when another Kitty is ill. Prayers and healing vines for Yum.

She can't wait to get home either! Good luck tomorrow. You can get her back home and back on track.

Her BG dropped into the 30's yesterday because they gave her 5 units of Lantus instead of 0.5 units!!!! The truth comes out.
With the reduction in IV fluids, her creatinine has bounced up to 3.2 from 2.8.
Her HCT has dropped to 19%.
I think I am going to bring her home at noon. They have to drop the IV fluids down further because they are contributing to her anemia.
I will give her subQ fluids at home.
Obviously I will do a better job than them at the BG control.
I will retest her blood day after tomorrow, unless she looks unstable.
I need to give her hugs and kisses.

Are you kidding me?! How on earth do they make a mistake like that in critical care? I'm glad she's coming home today because you can keep her safe! Do they know what is causing the anemia (CKD?) or what kind it is? What are you supposed to do about that?

Holy crap! Now I know why my IM insisted on no insulin for the 3 days Jones was in the ER.

I am so glad that Yum was not permanently harmed by that act of negligence. Happy to hear she gets to come home today and can't wait for updates.

And critical care denied getting her urine culture report from my local vet.
But I just called them: they got it Saturday and sent it on to critical care.
Nothing grew in the culture, but my local vet definitely saw bacteria in the sample. Maybe the bacteria died in transport.
Yum has had other negative growth cultures when bacteria were seen in the sample.
Her ultrasound does show possible blockage in a ureter. Critical care mentioned that but did not elaborate; my local vet just read the report to me.
Geez.
Cabergoline can cause fibrosis in the urinary tract. She has only been on it for a month.
So she is coming home, and her creatinine level is no longer 6, but I have no firm answers; her HCT is worse, she has had an insulin overdose, and a seizure or stroke.
I don't think they believe she is stable enough for another ultrasound, but they didn't say that. Over the weekend I mainly spoke to an intern vet at critical care.
I am worried. My girl deserves a break. I am pretty sure she really does have an infection; the blockage could be due to swelling/inflammation.
I will request copies of all blood work and ultrasound reports.
They aren't going to charge me for the dextrose. Ha.

:eek::eek::eek:... I’m without words !!!! Really believe coming home will be just the tonic for her improvement :bighug::bighug::bighug: More prayers for you and Sweet Yum :bighug::bighug:

Yum is HOME. We are both over the moon happy. She is full of purrs and energy, bossing me around as usual.

She is on:
100ml a day of subQ fluids.
30mg of amoxicillin every 12 hours (hmmm, google says it is hard on kidneys)
20mg of enrofloxacin every 24 hours

They don't want me to feed her raw until she is off antibiotics.
They have her on Purina ProPlan EN gastroenteric, which is 17% carbs and 278mg phosphorus per 100 kcal.
I think I will cook her Radcat raw chicken to make it not raw and try that instead.

I think she is bouncing from her Monday morning Lantus overdose plus high carb diet. I might skip her insulin tonight and figure out what is going on.

Thank you everyone for caring and advising.

So glad she's home!! Hope those antibiotics help her feel better very quickly. I know your love and attention will be a big help to her. :D Tons of healing vines your way.

Happy dance, Yum is home! :woot: Happy belated birthday sweet Yum! :cat: :bighug::bighug::bighug:

The antibiotics, in this case, do more good than harm. None of it is great for the kidneys, but the infection is worse for the kidneys. In instances like these, I look the other way, don't read the package insert and just grin and bear it, it's not like you have a plethora of alternatives.

The civie clowder and I are doing happy dance that your Yum is now home! What relief you both must feel after all you both have been through. I hope that Yum feels better each day, and that you both can catch up on much needed restorative rest (yay for cat naps for people, too!).

Hope the antibiotics help. I hate to ask, you both have been through so much: are you doing probiotics especially during the three antibiotics period?

Sending heaps of vines and happy to be home scritches for your Yum.
Sina
