So Rufus got up to 133 at +6 last night and I was concerned that he was going in wrong direction, and wondered how high it would be the AM. He came into bed at 7am like always and was snuggly and purring. Telltale signs of higher numbers lately. Nope, not today. 74. It's like you can't make this up. So here we go another morning without a shot. Like I said before, this is scary and exciting. I also left out some wet food to see if he'd eat it, and he did!

So I was wondering, 2 days in a row no shot in the AM. Is it bad to not soot in am, but then in pm? If he's low like this should I just give him 1u or something just so he has some in him at all times? I don't think we'll be having too many days with no shots as soon as we find his magic number, but it got my curious as I know that the inmsulin only lasts about 12 hours, but there is a depot.

Wow, Rufus....

Ideally we do like to shoot twice a day, because once a day shooting usually brings about unevenness in the cycles. So we do work towards finding that perfect dose that can be given twice a day.

However, Rufus is keeping all of us on our toes....as usual, I'm not quite sure what to tell you with regards to what you should try next with dosing, but I'm sure some of those who are more experienced with "racing down the dosing ladder" kitties will come along with some input for you.

I'm going thru the exact same situation with Aurora. Last night her PMPS was 70 so I skipped the shot, I'm giving her micro doses anyways .25 of a unit - this morning she was 71 and I decided to grow a pair and shoot....I hope this wasn't a bad idea....I'm at work all day.....hopefully she stays flat. I left a bunch of wet food out for her.
My vet said it was OK to just shoot 1x per day if Aurora continued to stay in these low numbers but the group says no, you should still try and shoot AM and PM

Do you think I should give him 1u now just so I don't have to not dose?

I don't really trust the vet. They always say to shoot and they don't even expect me to home test!! So glad I found this place or Rufus would be on 6 units right now instead of 3!

I got into a battle with my vet after I joined this group. If I didn't join and test, I would have shot Aurora with 3 units when she was having a low 100 # and that would have been a huge issue. After her seeing Aurora's fructosamine test she agreed that I have her very well managed and basically said follow whatever you are doing. She was concerned with anything under an 80 and that is why she said to skip. I'm so thankful for this group!

I'm so thankful, too! So many good people willing to share and help!

You know how to prop hm up with food. Others may disagree but I’d be inclined to find a lower dose that you can shoot twice a day if he were mine. I’m having a hard time figuring out what that dose might be though because you have had to jump around so much.

I hear ya. I want to do 2 a day. We keep lowering dose, and he keeps staying low. The dose for today was supposed to be 2.5u, so seeing how today goes, that'll be what he gets tonight. It's crazy how quickly this is happening.

It's like you can't make this up.
I know the feeling well ;)
Honestly, when we were in free fall down the dosing ladder I just had to feel my way through. “Know thy Cat “ seemed impossible. “Is this my cat???” became our new reality. I had to go with gut instincts guidey by safety first.

My $0.02:
If it were my cat at this point I would try 1u as the new dose to see if you can shoot it consistently every 12 hours.

It is indeed scary and exciting !

Oh! I don't know if I can drop to 1u! He was just on 6 last week!! Ugh! I think I'm going to do 2u tonight and see how that goes. I really do appeciate the advice though! Keep it coming! :)

I'm inclined to agree with Sandy - I'd give 1U a go given how Rufus has responded to the dental. If it fails, you can increase him back up as needed.

YEah, maybe I should do 1u. It just scares me because as we've gone down, he numbers have been good and not TOO low. I just fear if I go to 1u and its not enough that I won't get him back in good numbers. I've got a little ptsd if thats a thing with this! 12 weeks of red and blacks and then week and a half of good numbers. Scary if he goes back into high numbers. Probably irrational, but scary nontheless :)

Yep, there is PTSD with this stuff for sure! Let's see where his numbers are tonight, but so far he's definitely holding his own on 1U, so definitely keep that in mind as a possible permanent dose going forward. With testing the way you do, you'll catch it right away if he starts trending upwards.

+7 212!! Lip smacking is back, and he had a pepcid and cernia this am. He's eating right now, but I'll test in about 2 more hours. Hopefully will go down, but I don't think 1u will do, although his depot is probably a little low? If it stays 200 or above, I'm doing 2.5u going forward.

Yowza. I'm wondering if tat BG is from the treats and high carb dry. Both of those take longer to hit the bloodstream, and take longer to clear the system, too.

In conjunction with the lip-smacking, I also wonder if the treats and dry are the cause, at least today...just a thought.

Dosing decision is yours - you know what to do if he does drop!

I was wondering about the treats and food too. The dry food he ate is supposedly 44% carbs, but I don't think he ate that much of it. Probably less then 1/8 cup. And he had the 5 treats. I'm sure all of that didn't help, and he is kinda running on empty. 2 no doses Monday, 1 no dose yesterday, 1u this am. I have no idea what to make of the lip smacking. I sure hope it's not from pain. He ate the kibble. I put out some sheba soft pate that he ate yesterday, now today just licked at it. So I went and made him some pureed food and ate the whole can. They told me his mouth should be pain free, so wonder if they missed something or if his tummy is painful and hurts to chew?

You know we we're just talking about him going high and my PTSD about it happening. And then it does. I really don't want him to go low, but I don't want him in the 200's either. Makes the kidneys work harder and he already has some degree of kidney disease. My old vet did say that all cats over 10 have some degree of kidney disease though.

Kitties are notorious for changing their mind about what food they like, that's for sure. But maybe he's grown to enjoy the purred stuff you give him.

They also know how to read our minds, so be careful what you think:p!

With dosing tonight, it is a good idea to also factor in the kibble and treats, because once those wear off, he could possibly nosedive. Just something to consider while you decide on a dose.

The kibble and treats should be out of system by PMPS though, right? I hope he doesn't think I'm going to puree his food forever. I could think of worse things but it's so annoying :)

I'll try taking a nap today, so I can wake up and test overnight. This whole unemployment thing sure came at a good time.

One of the reasons we don't like giving high carb dry food is that it is metabolized slower, and can take longer to get out of the system.

Any chance his treats/kibble have wheat in them? Many cats GI systems complain at gluten.

I don't think so, I can check though. The treats are hydrolyzed and the kibble is royal canin selective rabbit. I did give him a tiny bit of turkey yesterday, maybe it's working it's way through his immune system.

how do you tell a cat that if he eats the not so yummy rabbit food he will feel so much better later, instead of the icky food that will make him nauseous later? Anyone know a cat whisperer? :)

Well learned something about food today, carb wise at least. A little bit of high carb dry food stays in body for about 5 or 6 hours, but doesn't raise BG until about 2 to 3 hours after eating! Rufus was drinking water for about 2 minutes straight and I feared his BG had gone up significanly since last check, but nope.

Ok, PMPS 117. I'm scared to do 1u, I'm going to do 2. Wish me luck and I hope you all aren't mad for me not giving 1u. I truly appreciate the help and suggestions!

Well now he's not eating. He had some chicken breast of mine a little earlier, but now wont eat his dinner. Maybe 1u it is....
