Big John ate about half his breakfast an hour ago at 7am - then tested at 255 - his dose is supposed to be 6u - I am hesitant to give full dose since he was at 146 last evening at 6pm and I gave no shot. I have no other history on him. What should I do? He has been a grazer and free-fed before I got him just yesterday.

I also posted in the N forum but was told to use the more active main forum for faster response. I am not new to feline diabetes but new to N insulin. Just adopted Big John yesterday and have no records/history yet. He is supposed to get 6u N twice a day, eats DM wet and mostly dry.

We actually need to know his BG before he's eaten anything (and no food at least 2 hours before that) to judge whether a dose is safe. Food can raise BG and you could be giving too large a dose, especially in this dose range. That 255 isn't that high considering he has food on board.

It's best not to skip insulin again though so how about this: give him a half dose of 3 u this AM and test his BG 2 hours afterward. If he's dropped 50+ points be prepared to test again and possibly give small snacks to keep him from diving. Post here for advice.

Thanks - gave him 3u and will retest @+2. Everything is new for him today - meeting new cats and hearing dogs but he is so calm and sweet. He was great for his testing and 1st shot by me.
