My prozinc opened bottle has remained refrigerated & says expires 4/18. I bought this in September 17. Would you still be able to use it? It looks fine, not cloudy. I have to do another test or 2 to be sure before starting her back on insulin tonight! I’m very sad about this. I know this is normal for everyone here, Baby went into remission after 7 weeks (aug17) & has been fine since! Here we go - my poor BGK, momma has to stick you again! :) any help is appreciated you guys! After 2 hr without food her bg was 349.

It's not likely that it's still good...that expiration usually applies to unopened bottles. However, you could definitely give it a try and see if it does anything and if it doesn't affect her numbers, order a new bottle.

Thank you all!! I’m ordering new to be safe! It’s like being a newbie all over again! Not experienced & overwhelmed. Just not as bad as the first go-around. I just don’t want my Baby to hate me! She’s been through so much.

I doubt that insulin will be very effective, at the very least you may have to give a larger dose than you would with fresh insulin. I am sorry that poor Baby has to start getting shots again. :(

Welcome, Becky! I'm sorry you have to start again. We're here to help and support. :)
I thank you so much! It happens & maybe I can remember & apply it all! I’ve started Baby at 1 unit of prozinc. Just an FYI; I did ask my sons fiancé (endocrine Dr.) if the prozinc is ok if it’s been opened since Oct. She seemed to think if it was kept refrigerated & doesn’t expire until later this year, it might be ok. Evidently it’s working as Baby’s bg was 120 at +2. I don’t know how to set up a spreadsheet in my phone but I will try?!? I have an old laptop that I could probably use but I just do everything on my phone. I have read that prozinc has an extra bump at +8, would that be another good testing time? Trying to see where we go from 354 on Sunday. :)

No, I don't think you'll see an extra bump around +8. What was here BG at pre shot time. If it was quite a bit higher than 120 you might have to monitor in the hours ahead.

The low point with Prozinc is usually between +4 and +7 for most cats. No +8 bumps that I'm aware of. Do you still have your old spreadsheet? You can just link that one again and we can get you the directions for adding a new tab for 2018. Let us know if you've still got access to the old one.

I'd keep in mind that Prozinc is formulated for felines ONLY and human insulin like Lantus is used on felines and humans. You really can't compare the safety guidelines (expiration dates) as they are formulated for different mammals.

I hope its working.

It’s only been a 36 hr pd. & either she’s bouncing on her own or it’s working. Her +2 last night was 76 so I retested & stayed up till after midnight. It rose so all good. I’ll get a good nadir today & set up this ss. Thank you for your help! I really appreciate the comments because it helps me think when I’m concerned with my Baby!

@Djamila. I didn’t have a ss before because I only had my phone. It was a short period of time & went into remission. It’s possible with the phone I’ve found out. So I finally got it set up but not linked yet. I’m getting there! Lol:cat:

Not sure what kind of phone you have. I have an iPhone. I downloaded google docs- "google sheets" & was able to have the spreadsheet with ready access om my phone.

Although I still slack at updating regularly.

PS: Aren't these ladies wonderful?

@Teenuh. Yes iPhone! I finally found google docs (the right one) opened & named. That’s it so far. At least now I know it will work if you did it! I went to pick up new prozinc & cerenia for Baby & other errands today. I need to get busy & start the input & find out how to link it?!?
Yes also everyone here that advises me... I’m so grateful for! I’d be lost without it! Thanks to :) you too!

If you scroll all the way up to the top of the screen in google docs, you can select the address, copy, and then flip over here to FDMB, and open your profile, then I think the rest of the directions are pretty much the same as this:

If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll see if I can give better directions. ;)

I think I’ve linked my ss! It doesn’t take a whole lot to make me happy! lol Now to put numbers in... this may be another week :banghead: but I’ve kept a log to copy! Thank you all again for the support! Just having someone care is a true blessing! Really... big:bighug: :)

Yeah! Great job! Now one more step:
upload_2018-2-8_16-13-42.jpeg

Click on the share button in the top right corner, and select "anyone with the link can view" Then we'll be able to see it too!

And just start with the numbers you get today. You can go back and fill in the older ones as you get time.

I agree. Knowing that there are people around here who care makes all the difference in this journey!

Thank you! She had a low on tues & I dropped to .6. So I’ll half it! Great! I’m using the conversion chart for the u100 needles because I cannot find u-40 in a 31 guage. Any clue on where to get those. I found 29 but not using that needle on her! This advice is sure appreciated. She was at 555 one night. I should have posted the beginning on last Sun morning. She has also had 2 ns too. Bouncy

The U100s with conversion chart will give you far more dosing options. I said 0.5 u but you could try 0.6 u or eyeball half way between the 0.4 u and 0.6 u marks on the U100. I'm only going by the two numbers on your SS. It'll be easier to assess once you have a few days. Our advice with ProZinc is to keep a dose at least three cycles unless a PS is too low or a lime green pops up mid cycle.

The hope is that she'll settle once you figure out the good dose range for her at this point in time. It can and will change over time. :)

Yeah! I can see it! :)

Yes to what Kris just posted - finding a dose and being consistent helps with bouncing. And the data helps you know when it is time to change. And also, u100's are more precise and helpful with sensitive kitties so as long as you're already using them and know how to convert, I would suggest sticking with that and not going back to the u40's.

Hopefully the 0.6 will help you be able to shoot both cycles.

Fantastic! I had slightly altered (lower) a couple days already but wasn’t sure if it was the best idea. That was in regard to a low number & I fed her some high carb treats & food to get it to rise. I am ready to learn & keep my Baby healthy! Thank you both soooo much!
I’ll see where she’s at in am. I’m watching the skaters on the olympics, such talent! Night night gals!

I'm in the same position as you are with my Blue. He has been in remission for a while; I didn't check the last date he was given insulin, but it has been 6 months or so. I, like you had 3/4 of a vial of ProZinc, and since his sugar tested quite high ( 445), I gave 1 unit, and his level was 125 at 5 hours. I checked with my vet, and she said the insulin has a two year shelf life--I' sure that's not penetrated. I've been testing Blue morning and night for a few days and his numbers range about 3-400 each time with a couple of less than 100.

I'm going to get a new vial because I don't want to do anything that could cause difficulties for Blue.

Yes, we’re in the same boat! My vet said it may be fine as it had a date of May 2018 on the box. However... it may be lacking in strength or duration. I chose to buy a new bottle. They did not push me on it but if I’m going to do this; I want the good stuff!!
It was more expensive by $35 there (my vet) than online, but I waited 6 days for the Allivet ($95) to deliver the first go around. You can order a speedier shipment I would think; but then I imagine it to be around the same cost. Although cost is an issue; (I like money lol) when it comes to Baby I usually forget that! Hope you’re doing ok, this disease is a challenge but I’d do anything for my girl...

It's those pesky proteins that cause the issue!!

The problem I found with shipping for Allivet is that due to it needing to be kept cold--that shipping/packaging increases. It was the same price to purchase from my vet.

The syringes and sharps container will REFUSE to buy from my vet again. I did the first time, but was something like $65.

I like my money too Becky! In fact, I tend to spoil myself and buy moroccanoil conditioner from the salon--I have lots of curly hair and end up needing the 1L. It runs about $68. It's expensive!! It lasts about 3 months. I needed some at Gracie's Dx, but I didn''t buy any, as the insulin was more important.

Still haven't bought. I want it, but holding out, as it isn't a necessity.

Are you just using the oil, or is it a product? Because you can buy Argan oil (which is the same thing as Moroccan oil) for less than $68 :)

Well I have to say that I wear very short hair, not much product needed. The big plus is my daughter is the manager of a professional hair product store so she gets it at cost! I like the biolage & redken color treated & smoothing lines. I scrimp on everything when Baby needs something because I have to! Well the food bill is always the same cause I like to eat too! That I believe is a necessity. Lol

Checking in, Becky. Did you give her 0.6 u again this AM? It isn't on your SS.

What brand is that? Morrocan oil? I wish I had curls! I keep it very short - thick & course, a small wave to it. I was a cosmetologist for 15 yrs so I know the prof products are better. I do like some store bought L’Oréal though! :) I raised my kids on my own so I’m used to someone always coming before me! I splurged at Christmas on some clothing & shoes that were great sales so... Have to be a smart shopper!

Ah, that has its advantages. I've considered going a little shorter like a bob or lob, but chicken out at the last minute and just ask her to trim up the ends and add more layers. Even that gives me a little anxiety.

I did this awhile ago when I wanted highlights and I kept chickening out at the last minute. This last time she just did it. I tend to keep it simple. I dye my hair a chocolate/reddish color. Just a shade or two darker from my original color.

Redken doesn't sit well with my hair. I have Biolage in my shower, and Framesi, Deva Curl. I have a cocktail of stuff I use. It's horrible.

Curls require so much more. I would LOVE to get out of the shower throw on a single product and be done.

@Teenuh. The best I know!!! #blessed
My daughters hair sounds like yours- she buys the leave in curl stuff & scrunches to let it air dry! I call it purple, reddish brown! Just remember I haven’t been in the business for 20 years so she uses words I’ve never heard of!! Now she advises me! Hers is not real curly but if she has layers cut, (gets the weight off) it curls better. It probably doesn’t dry till noon though! Other days or special ones, she uses straightening iron. Yours sound beautiful- I used to get perms & stack it out when that was cool.

I agree with Kris about holding the dose a few more cycles to give her time to stabilize since she just started back on insulin.

And yes, Morocco is an amazing country. Although it can get chilly this time of year there too. Not snow-and-ice chilly, but since not a lot of homes have heat, when it gets cooler it can be a little rough. Fortunately it only lasts about a month or so and then the sun warms back up again :).

I hope you stay warm and safe through this coming storm! It's a good excuse to cuddle up with BGK!

@Kris & Teasel . @Djamila . BGK is high at the pmps but I just hate to raise that dose because we go to bed, of course. I’ll give it more cycles to see if that changes. I do have to say that she’s not much of a day time sleeper! She definitely isn’t the normal 18 hr a day sleeping cat. More like 12 at night & maybe a short 1 hr cat nap in the afternoon! If I’m home anyway, which I am a lot. She just wants to go outside (then inside, then outside etc.) & I’m sure she dozes in her chair out there...but not for long. Maybe she just uses that insulin up faster during the day because of no sleep!? Make any sense or sound crazy?!?

Sounds wonderful there! I know I was surprised when I lived in Milwaukee that a lot of people & places do not have air conditioning! I think we used our little window unit 4 times in 3 years! We lived with trees around us, on a hill & caught a great breeze in the summer. And that was more due to humidity. My aunt in Florida only had little electric heaters but she was further south.

When you're home, if you can do a test or two during the cycle, it will help gauge if high numbers like that are due to too much insulin or too little insulin. The pre-shot numbers only tell a little bit of the story. Why they are that high requires the numbers in the middle. I think for now holding the dose the same was the right decision. As you build some of the mid-cycle data we can figure out how to adjust the dose to hopefully start to bring those down a bit.
