hi I have a 10year old diabetic girl. Diagnosed last may. Went on 1 unit of pro zinc 2 x a day. Went into remission for 4 months. Now on 1 unit of lantus once a day. Seems to be doing good. Has had a weigh gain. 8.2 lbs from 7.4. Is a picky eater. Eats ff classics . My question is. Is once a day acceptable? Would really love to see remission again. Thanks

Welcome. I'm not one with enuf experience to answer but from my readings on here and teachings from @Wendy&Neko (hopefully she will chime in), Lantus is a 12 hour drug so you should plan on 2x a day, I'm sure more knowledgeable folks will join in. Plus you should start a spread sheet so we can see how things are going over tyme. Good luck!

P.S. Read all the stickys several tymes

She had been on twice a day and the vet took her down to one because she was dipping real low right before next shot was due.

Lantus should be given every 12 hours.

If you get Pre-shots that are too low to shoot, you need to reduce the dose so that you can get 2 shots per day

I have been doing checks , not everyday as the vet says no need but I could tell one day that 6 hours after her shot she was low .. 48. So we gave food and it came up. Blood curves have been done too. All indicate she is doing well on once a day. Vet felt she was over sensitive to 2x a day. That’s why she dipped so low. She acts normal, has normal potty habits . I was just curious as I am hoping for a remission again

IMHO, your vet is wrong about testing. Cats can read in the hypo range and not necessarily show symptoms.

Have you been giving the 1 unit in the morning or evening? It could be your kitty will do better with 1/2 unit AM and PM. We have seen a very few cats do well on once a day dosing, but typically on very small doses.

I agree with Wendy. Max often did not let me know when he was low. Sometimes I we t to bed six hours after insulin with a number well over 100 and awoke to a 50-60.
