Trouble getting things under control

Our poor little Willow is back at the Emergency vet. We’ve been trying to get her diabetes under control but her glucose levels have been all
Over the place and she stopped eating suddenly and is now dehydrated and she has some ketones in her system. They are testing for underlaying infection and pancreatitis. I hate having to leave her there even though I know she needs to be there. Poor little one. My usual vet thinks we may need to change insulin types from Lantus to a shorter acting one. I’m hoping we get her feeling well soon.

Sending prayers for sweet Willow:bighug: let us know how she’s doing. You may want to add something about ketones to your thread title to get more info on how to care for her when she gets home to best prevent their reoccurrence.
 
Have they discovered the cause? Was it the ketones making her feel bad or does she also have pancreatitis?

We are still waiting on results of the pancreatitis test. They think it probably was but she’s also had a bad tooth that’s been getting infected though it’s never stopped her eating like that. They did say her abdomen was a little inflamed. She’s eating well this morning at the vet which is great. She wasn’t eating up until last night. Fingers crossed she can come home. We will have to make a decision on her tooth removal timing... the vet wanted her to be more stable after her recent diabetes diagnosis but if it’s contributing to her being unwell it may be better just to get done. has anyone had any experience with tooth removal surgery with their diabetic cat?
 
My cat had a dental shortly after diagnosis which included the removal of 2 teeth. He was no where near regulated and his numbers were in the 300’s. But, he did not have ketones or pancreatitis, so I’m not sure if that would make a difference in the timing.

Thank you. The vet has decided to wait until
Next week to do her tooth. She will
Come home tomorrow morning. They’ll give her an antibiotic injection to help keep the tooth from causing issues until she gets it out next week. Still awaiting results on suspected pancreatitis.

If they suspect pancratitis they should treat the symptoms in the meantime. The treatments for it are fluids (sub q's can be done at home if you are willing), cerenia for nausea and bupe for pain.

Thank you. Yes they have been treating her for symptoms of pancreatitis with pain meds, nausea meds and fluids and appetite stimulant to get her eating the other day. They also have had her on iv antibiotics and she will come home with pain meds and an anti biotic injection to stop her tooth from causing issues until she has it out next week.
 
She’s home finally! Pancreatitis results were negative which is good news. Still unsure why she was unwell... maybe her tooth but she did also have ketones present. She had some abdominal pain and a few vomits over several
Days and was dehydrated and not eating when we took her in but we caught the ketones very earlier which was good. Tooth will come out next week allgoing well. Thank you for all the well wishes! She’s looking a bit thin and ragged and shaved in lots of places but happy to be home!

They sure are! Your baby is gorgeous! So sorry for your loss. We lost our 19 yr old Burmese last year. They sure stay in your heart.
