Trying to stay calm, but vet made it sound like I'd have lab results by Monday at the latest and haven't heard from him yet, hope he's just busy! I had to call them to ask about giving 50ml daily of fluids rather than 100ml every other day, they usually get back to me pretty quickly and haven't returned my call. They are closed now.

What's up with Terumo? Anybody know? I know @Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) and others loved their syringes and the needles for giving fluids were highly recommended as better than any other brand and very sharp, but it looks like both of those things are discontinued, I bought a few boxes to give fluids with since they said once they are out of stock they are gone. Is this company out of business or what?

My gut about the delayed vet lab call was right, unfortunately. :(

He called, p binders kind of working, her kidneys, not so much

@Marje and Gracie lab wizarding skills requested please (and if you have a magic wand to changes those numbers, that would be handy too), data up on SS

Tried to give just gravy at +1 to see if any different response in pm since she’s being all weird and relaxed and surfy recently. Nope. +1.5 70, then gave tsp of gravy and one drop of Karo, +2 89, that’s better

No they aren’t, they are just changing their focus. They discontinued their most awesome insulin syringes a few years ago. I really don’t know why they have discontinued their UTW needles. :arghh:

I’ll check the labs. :bighug:

Good news is P is down. Bad news is it needs to be way lower. Also good news is her potassium and glucose look great and her hematocrit is holding fairly steady. Ca is stable.

For one, I’d on top of the methylB12 and multiB. I saw you decided against the injectable methylB12 but be sure you can get the oral in her.

Second, I’d suggest asking the vet about:
  • Possible echocardiogram to make sure heart is stable enough to handle more fluids daily; 50 mls/day is not much (10 tsp). IMHO, she could use 100 mls/day but I would not do it without a detailed discussion with the vet to include her heart. Even if an echo looks good, her age is a factor when it comes to strength of heart.
  • Increasing the binder
  • I don’t remember (sorry) but did he check her BP (geez, that auto corrected to BO so I’m glad I caught it :p).
And don’t forget that how she’s feeling is really important. As with the BG, our kitties are not their numbers.

Thanks so much. :bighug:

Do you think the low RBC is an anemia indication? It could also be dehydration, but can she be dehydrated whilst getting fluids in her food and sub q?

I didn't decide against the injectable b12, he just wasn't a big supporter/fan of it, do you think it works better than the oral one? I was just wanting to go that route for ease of use, didn't expect she would eat the methyl b12, but she has been (so far) along with the multi B, on top of it entirely she gets them all and eats them every day.

So I talked about the fluids and concern about her heart and not pushing it, his response was most cat's tolerate these fluids quite well and he rarely sees the heart problems from it. He wants her to have 100ml a day and it comes down to helping her kidneys vs risking her heart and which is riskier to do or not do. He said we could get an echo but he thinks it's overkill because her heart sounded great. Continue monitoring her resting breaths per minute. Does breaking it up help at all, like 50ml am/50 ml pm? I would hate to have to do that to her twice a day, but if it's easier on her heart I would.

He didn't mention increasing her binder, I will ask about that, he said it was on the high range of normal, didn't seem concerned over it.

Some of the autocorrects are so good! He did take her BP the last time, it was quite normal, I can get the exact number but I don't have it on hand.

He said again she was doing great and looking good, all things considered and she is certainly acting improved. I found it devastating the numbers went that much higher in just under a month, especially when her BGs have finally started being consistently decent.

I don’t know. It’s relatively new and I’ve never used it.

The HCT...hematocrit is what you watch for the best indication of anemia but the RBCs are tied to that.

The reason I’m cautious about subq fluids in an older cat is because my 21 yr old cat developed CKD and I had the echo done. Everything was normal. She was bigger and got 150 mls a day and it overwhelmed her heart. The specialist said it sometimes happens in older cats. So, it could be Asia is absolutely fine. Yes, separating the amounts into 50 mls bid does help but 100 mls is not the same as 150 mls. I just wanted you to discuss it with your vet and you did.

I don’t know why vets forget that the P range includes that for kittens and kittens have a much higher P level. That’s doesn’t mean an adult cat with CKD should be anywhere near there. Her P level should be 4.5 or below.

CKD can be a roller coaster....as if diabetes hasn’t been enough. I tried to get Trixie’s SS to show you how long she stayed stable at relatively high numbers for a long time but the link doesn’t need work. You might check with Amy.

Nice greens. After that run of 89's did you start to wonder about the meter??:):D:D:D:D

On Tanya's site there's a reference for p lease else with respect to age, on tablet, at the moment, when I've got up, had a coffee and fed the masses I'll go to d it for you and link it.

I got another 89 in the pm, it was weird! :joyful:

There she goes with the neon green, she's been trying to get one all night. She's had enough Karo that in a normal am cycle she'd be well into pinks because of it (at least) by now.

Fabulous numbers today! You go, Asia! :D

My vet suggested breaking it up into twice daily sessions for my civvie Minka. Like you, I wasn't thrilled with putting her through it twice, but it was easier on her heart, and her kidneys, too, for that matter.
I'm sure Asia smells just fine
