does anyone know if there is an awesome site like this for canine diabetes? my sis in law thinks her dog has diabetes but has not taken to vet yet. I am telling her she should get educated before she goes to vet so she doesn't get blindsided like I did and am sure many of us did with prescription foods, no at home testing, and misinformation, etc.

There's this one:

It's a while since I looked at it but IIRC there isn't quite as much educational material there as there is on FDMB. However, there is a forum associated with the board. Either that will be a help or maybe the forum members may be able to give your sister-in-law referrals to additional reputable sites/support groups.

If she suspects diabetes I'd suggest that she starts monitoring her dog's urine for glucose and ketones immediately (using Keto-diastix or other test strips with panels for both glucose and ketones).

This is one of the better sites for canine diabetes:

If she has access to a meter she could try testing her pup at home. The site listed above has tips on where to test for dogs which is a bit different that kitties.

ETA I see Mogs suggested the same site. ;)

thank you. I will pass this on to her. she has already said she cant do shots. I told her she can. if I can - anyone can. I know they don't have testing supplies at home. i have an alphatrak i use on rex - would it be a pain to reset to dog and have them bring her over to test? i guess i will have to get out the book and read how to change the setting since i don't remember anymore. i just don't want to mess it up for when i am testing rex. i also have some ketone/glucose sticks i could give to them. thanks again for the info. :)

There are videos on YouTube showing how to do BG tests for droolers, e.g:

I've not watched all of them so can't comment on quality/validity.

You can certainly use the AT2 meter to test the pup. Check the test strip vial and it will show a code for kitties and one for dogs. Change the number to the dog code for the pup's test then change it back to the cat code when you are done. The AT2 meter will give you a number closer to what a vet machine will give,

To change the code insert a strip...as soon as the code number shows on the meter press the "M" or "C" button to get the numbers to go up or down to match the dog code on the test strip container. Then do the same to change it back to kitty code

You could recode the meter to the right number for dogs on your current pod of test strips just before testing her doggie and then reset it back to the cat code straight after.

IIRC, you fully insert the test strip into the meter and when the code is displayed you repeatedly press the meter button to advance the number displayed till it matches the code you need. Then you wait and the meter goes into 'ready for test' mode as normal. If you're not sure you did it right, take the strip out to switch the meter off, fully reinsert the test strip again and the new code should be displayed on power-up. Proceed as normal after that.

Rinse 'n' repeat to set it back to the kitty code for the strip batch in use.
