The day before today aka yesterday

We're looking at an estimate of a week or so in the hospital; so much for a quick discharge for Alley's mom. On the bright side, it looks like I'm allowed to visit since I caught the flu the same time my wife did and I'm pretty much over it now so I can't get it from or give it to anyone now. So hooray for that.

Alley just keeps cruising the greens in apparent disregard of any dose reduction I've thrown at her recently. After 3 cycles at 1.75U, she's still hanging out around 60, and this after an unplanned steep reduction from 2.5U due to safety concerns for Alley while my mind is obviously elsewhere. I did another slight drop to 1.5U this morning since Alley has been holding 60 like a champ and I still worry about low numbers should I be away for a long period. Sophie has a 6 - 8 hour bladder, so I'll always be home at least that frequently.

She's not making it easy is she?? But there again that's Alley's style, she's probably figured that the 'feed me look' doesn't work, but the penny may have dropped that low greens=more fud:rolleyes:

She may have had a bit of an overfull depot, with the 2.5u dose and that may still be responsible for some of the lower greens you are seeing, that and the removal of the drooler treats she was sneaking:rolleyes:

Continuing vines for your wife:bighug::bighug::bighug:
Glad you will be allowed visiting rights.

I hope the reduced dose keeps Alley surfing safely. If there is a plus for catching the flu, I guess that is it. I hope your wife won't have to be in the hospital that long. Sending more prayers.

Just goes to show how nasty genuine influenza can be. It's the H3N2 variant of Influenza A that's most widespread and it's a nasty little critter. If you know anyone who's very weak with "just a cold", make them get checked out. My wife was in acute hypoxemia and even money it would have killed her left untreated. The only reason she's doing better is that she's being fed 4 LPM pure oxygen via a nasal cannula to maintain saturation in the mid 90s, but the moment they discontinue it, her O2 saturation starts dropping again toward 80% and points south. Again, that cold... it could be the flu and it can be dangerous.

Good info to know. I hope she continues to get better. There is a lot of nasty stuff going around in my area.

We've had a friend in UK hospitalized with it too, don't know if its the same strain. Last year he ended up with pneumonia, so this time he went in to ER sooner, so his stay in hospital was thankfully short.

Dang Alley! What's it going to take for me to get you toward them blue numbers?

56 at +5.

She's been sitting at generally 60 for the past three days solid and it doesn't seem to much matter what I throw at her dose-wise.

Commercial spokesperson: "Hey Alley! We switched glucose for Lantus when you weren't looking!"
Alley: "What, really?"
Commercial spokesperson: "You've been dosing on sugar!"
Alley: "Hey, wow, I couldn't tell the difference! You say you've been shooting me up with sugar? It tastes just like my insulin!"
Commercial spokesperson: "Cats can't tell the difference!"
Alley: "Sugar, no sh*t? That's pretty irresponsible, really."

I may have mentioned it somewhere, but Alley's mom also showed up with spots of pneumonia on top of everything else. The doctors must be satisfied that's knocked out because when I last visited, her IV tree with a couple empty drip bags of amoxicillin was standing unused on the other side of the room. Yea, sooner would have been a lot better. I think we were expecting her recovery to mirror my own recovery, except when I started to turn the corner after a week, she never made the turn...

As for the U.K., it looks like the same strain. This from yesterday's Daily Mail:

"Just a handful of places remain uninfected by the deadly 'Aussie flu' virus as it rapidly spreads across the UK — plunging hospitals into chaos. Perthsire, Inverness, Preston, Glasgow and Midlothian - previously untouched - have now all reported cases of the dangerous new H3N2 strain of Influenza A."

Back from hospital. Yesterday they said a week, today they're saying maybe tomorrow for Alley's mom to go home with an oxygen concentrator. I had heard there were "spots" of pneumonia, but now I hear there's much more pneumonia than that and the antibiotic drip is going again... so tomorrow? Really? Think I'll visit the doctor myself tomorrow since I'm still straggling some upper and lower congestion 2 weeks out.

Alley 54 at +3 so she's still hovering at the low end of dark green. What's it going to take to run this darn cat up toward 100?

First, vines for your wife, and some for you, too. Good idea to get yourself checked out. Who will care for Alley and Sophie if you go down, too? I hear this year's flu shot totally missed the mark on the strains that are out there. Scary.

I think Alley's depot may be overfull. You might want to consider skipping a shot to drain it a bit. You stayed at 1.75 such a short time, not even long enough for the 2.25 depot to be completely out of the picture. It needs a chance to catch up.

I'm not anticipating going down. Visiting the doctor tomorrow is precautionary in case I might have a touch of pneumonia. I feel much better than a week ago. Better safe than to let something get worse. That's how Alley's mom got into this pickle.

I prefer to keep shooting than to skip a dose entirely, even if it's only 1.0U. I'm still waiting for Alley's numbers to go up so I can stop worrying about her so much... I do have bigger fish to fry. If I drop Alley to 1.0U, I'll feel safe enough while expecting an increase as her depot drains. Then I can respond to the increase with a 0.25U increase held for 6 - 10 cycles to get things back on track.

Whatever you're comfortable with. This is not your first rodeo. You could even do a bit more of a BCS - maybe .5?

0.5? That's a thought. +6 is down a bit at 51. I could go farther and just skip the next two shots (even though I've already said I'm disinclined to do that). On Alley's first time around, once she started generally holding green/blue sometime in late May 2016, she took every reduction in stride and soon aced her OTJ trial.

This all could be a case study in "Don't let your remission kitty get into the carbs!" Alley has been cut off from Sophie's food since 12/26, the same day the wife and I first got sick. Alley's getting better and now we're the patients. Lol.

I made the colossal mistake of letting Cinco have "just a few" pieces of kibble after he went OTJ. That evolved into more, and then he got Bartonella and totally ejected from the wagon. I've been beating myself over the head ever since, and preaching "NO dry food" to anyone who doesn't run screaming from the room. It only takes one piece to start the process...

I'd think of skipping just the one shot and draining the depot.
See where she is with that before deciding on your next move.

I agree with Tricia that it's possible the depot got overfull on the larger dose and it just hasn't caught up yet. When it does you might find the numbers come up significantly. Of course the contraband or rather lack of it now is likely influencing what you are seeing too, it's impossible to say what is the depot at play and what is the food affecting things.

Vines for you and your wife. Good idea with visiting the doc, best to nip these things in the bud.
