Threw up after SQ fluids

Ballonee had her vet appointment today. She got subcutaneous fluids to help with hydration and then when I got her home she threw up. The vet tech said that sometimes happens with the fluids given at the vets and then they go home and throw up.. didn't really go into why but when I asked she mentioned stress. I need to give her 50cc a day for the next 2 weeks. I'm fine with doing that but certainly don't want to do it if it's going to make her sick :( Maybe a slower administration might help? I'm familiar with clysis and administering SQ fluids but definitely not on a kitty :( anyone with experience have tips or disclaimers before I begin with this? Or is there a sticky somewhere that I've missed?

She is acting fine now.. bright and alert. Ate another half a can for me and drank so far is keeping this down.

50cc isn't a lot. Try it and see how she does.
 
It could be a combination of vet stress and the car ride.

Did the vet warm the subq fluids first? If not, that would an added factor (the incompetent vet that showed me how to give subq fluids to a tiny, sickly cat didn't warm the fluids first or even care that she ended up getting more fluid on the cat than in the cat).
 
Glad to hear that she's recovered and is acting chipper now!

Just checked out the spreadsheet-- you haven't taken the reduction she earned on New Year's? Low (-ish) pre-shot this morning :nailbiting:, do you have any mid-cycle tests to report? I'm just wondering if she might have also been going a little low and that might have contributed to her feeling "off" after the sub-Q...

No It was a bit on the chilly side and she didn't drip it in, she pushed it in.. and the poor thing looked uncomfortable the whole time. Like the vet tech seemed competent so I trust her I guess I was just wide-eyed the whole time haha! Just pushing a cold 50 cc bolus into a tiny thing over like 2 mins seemed odd to me but like I said I don't know medicine when it comes to kittys :/ "or even care that she ended up getting more fluid on the cat than in the cat" I don't know why this made me laugh so hard. That's unfortunate though <3

She was actually great today besides that.. even after she threw up she just walked away looking chipper her gluc was 180 after so I think that's decent.. like it wouldn't have caused her to feel sick I hope! The vet looked at her spreadsheet and recommended a dose increase to 0.50 (I did mention the lime greens a lot). She also recommended PEG in her food for constipation so that's good I believe it's miralax in the US. She also uses a human meter to test her own kitty at home so I can convert to a human meter now and she will know what I'm talking about!! and that excites me a lot. I don't know how I feel about the dose increase really :/ From my spot checks (that I should really add on to the spreadsheet sorry) she hasnt gone below 200 except for that one lime green. She's been feeling really good on this dose.. but her numbers don't look great at all :(

Ballonee might be bouncing off that 3.7 the other evening (I, too, speak mmol/L ;) ). Sometimes it can take several cycles for a bounce to clear. Today's AMPS is nice. :)

Sorry to hear about Ballonee's vomiting bout. I've never given sub-qs so can't offer any input. Just very glad to hear that your little darling felt none the worse for wear afterwards. I've got such a soft spot for your wee girl! (((Ballonee))) :)

I loved this! thank you. Very helpful. I like that they emphasized keeping everything sterile as well.. I noticed with animals the fine details get ignored sometimes and that makes me sad.

I watched it a few times when I was going to start sub q's with my cat Zimmy a few years ago. Glad you found it helpful too.

Thank you so much <3 <3 She was a spitfire today... it's very obvious she is feeling better but now she is fighting me every step of the way hahaha

What a fantastic introduction/tutorial video for administering sub-q fluids at home.

While it's a bonus that the production values are superb, what I really like the most about this video is the way the vet who made the film is so reassuring and confidence-inspiring. I think this film will help many people to try giving sub-qs at home - even intensely anxious people like me. He makes it sound so do-able.

For me, the best message in the film is how, with appropriate care and treatment support, cats with chronic health problems can continue to have a really good quality of life for many years. I also approved heartily of his comment about the role that prompt intervention plays in keeping a cat healthier and more comfortable.
