Considering Increasing Dosage This Morning

I recognize I have not been following normal ProZinc protocol mainly due to lack of any local support. Everyone here has been very supportive. I have been reluctant to increase recently due to lack of vet offices being open until Thursday morning my time.

I also know this is short notice but anticipate increasing the dosage by .25 units leaving me at 2.25 units. I will eye it as best I can. Her numbers have been going down so I am hoping this is the right direction to take now. Will be injecting in about 15 minutes. amps was 434.

Additionally, I have been getting later again in performing the injections due to constant interruptions. I would like to begin cutting the time between injections by 15 minutes until I can get this back to a reasonable hour. Currently I am at 11:05 a.m. and p.m. So by guidance I have been reading that seems to point to up to an hour, I am hoping it would be safe to reduce as I stated by about 15 minutes to bring it back to around 10:00 a.m./p.m. Is there any reason I cannot do this?

You can do that with ProZinc. In fact you could make the time change in 30 minute increments without causing a problem.
 
Very glad to see Goma starting to get better numbers (anti-jinx!).

Increased dosage this morning to 2.50. Amps was 415. I am still concerned about the morning readings being so high. Previously they were lower. Not completely understanding that.
 
A lot of the recent AMPS values are in the same ballpark. With allowed meter variance and at numbers in those ranges there's not much of a muchness between the low reds and the high pinks. You will get variations from day to day and from cycle to cycle, but the overall trend is heading in the right direction. :)

Also with Goma starting to see significant improvements in her mid-cycle BGs the preshot BG levels may potentially be a little 'bounce-influenced' at times.

Sorry, I am not clear on what "allowed meter variances" are. The black figures at pm +5.5 yesterday and +6 today are what is making me scratch my head. I am indeed fretting a bit with increasing the dosage after 4 cycles. Particularly since she was doing so well.

What Mogs is referring to with the meter variance is the 20% meter variance that is allowed. Basically, especially at higher numbers, your meter could be a bit off...even if you test the exact same drop of blood, you'll sometimes get say a 390 and then a 410...and we count that as pretty much the same number. :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to clarify. I do not want to presume/assume anything so to be sure I understand correctly do you mean 20% or 20 points.

20% - the meter reading might say, for example, 350. The true BG value can actually be within a range that is 20% higher down to 20% lower than that number. All meter readings are approximations within that sort of range. That means, of course, that the higher the BG number the bigger the meter’s allowed range in actual BG points.

I am sorry, but I find this a bit worrisome. If I have a reading of 300, it could actually be 240 and if I am understanding everything I would hesitate to give an injection or at a minimum, reduce the dosage possibly. I may be facing this tonight. While her numbers are now climbing, she remains in that range. I had been presuming that if I had a reading of 300 or more it would be okay to inject. Now I am unsure again or, lets just say I am not as confident.

It is possible that you are seeing a bit of 'bouncing' Goma is having some lower numbers than her little body has seen in a long time. That will clear over time. It is so good to see her in some lower numbers!

Do not let the meter variance that has been mentioned scare you. The numbers are not perfect, but you can still base your decisions on what you see. (I think I read somewhere in my AlphaTrak paperwork that it has been found to be accurate within 5%. I need to look for that to confirm though.)

Yes, while there is meter variance, it's not something to be concerned about as blood glucose does fluctuate. Decisions are based on the number you're seeing on the meter.

Even if Goma is lower than you are used to seeing, remember that you want her numbers to be lower. And it's this dose that is getting her there. You can see that she has started to rise, and once you see the rise you know it will be safe to shoot the next dose. As you start to shoot on lower and lower numbers, it does cause a bit of anxiety, but the data you are collecting will help make sure she is safe. Remember that normal healthy numbers are 68-150 throughout the entire cycle, so she still has a ways to go.
 
I understand how nerve wracking all this is for you. Yes, take the meter reading at face value if you got a good blood drop, etc. As Djamila said, that number is what is used to assess a dose. I guarantee that you'll start to feel a bit more confident with all this over time. :) Post any time for advice.

Thank you. Your response caused me to review the materials that came with the meter and the testing strip. The meter booklet did not give anything. However the testing strip sheet indicates that there is a 5.1% variance in accuracy so I am guessing that is what it is referring to. On my other thread concerning the testing strips - Had I re-read these same instructions I would have answered my own question. I am getting information overload and forgetting what I read.

Thank you for putting my mind at ease. I know she has a ways to go, and I admit this dramatic decline has me on edge. Still, as I mentioned in other responses, I am grateful to you and all the others for taking the time to explain and well, just be there .
