wondered if I could get any help tonight? I'm not comfortable giving 4 units (his usual) but wondering if I should give 2 units or none? i do have a spreadsheet (but not testing as often as I should, i know...) so not sure what he's doing during the day:( when he was at 196 a few weeks ago, vet said i should have given him the full dose (4 units) anyway.... wondering if I could get some help or opinions on what to do...he did eat already but not a huge amount:(

he also has IBD and he seems a little bloated so not sure if that is coming into play... right now I'm just delaying so haven't given him any insulin at this point (normally would shoot at 7 p.m.)

For now, try a 2 hour delay on the dose and see which direction the BG reading goes. I've been out of the game for awhile and freshly back so hopefully we can get some more practiced eyes on Izzy.

Can you delay 30 minutes and test again? Do not feed in the meantime, to see if Izzy is coming up. You don't have to wait a full two hours to see what's happening to the blood sugar.

He did eat a little right after we tested, but he has been sleeping since then. We can test him again right now, but it's been about 1.5 hours already. He has food available at all times since we previously had issues with weight loss and IBD flare when we withheld food/tried to feed him on a schedule.

He is now 254 (!!) So....now what? 2 u? 4 u?


....sigh....
 
Izzy has been at 4.0U for many consecutive cycles, so continuing with 4.0U after the jump to 254 is probably sound. It sounds like you're taking extra readings to calm your nerves and you know what to do and where to go if Izzy were to drop low.

thanks and yes, cat seems fine, but my nerves are shot haha and i think i've sprouted several more gray hairs:) we will test him a couple more times tonight and do have some high carb stuff just in case... thank you so much again---the sudden low/dropped numbers really wig me out :eek:
 
Just tested at +1 from shot and he was 383. Going to bed now...zzz.

The only question is... do we shoot at normal time tomorrow AM?
 
If you shot 2 hours late tonight, then your next shot should be given in 12 hours from the shot time tonight. You can slowly work the shot time back by 15 minutes each cycle or by 30 minutes per day.
Please try to test at a minimum before each shot, and get mid-cycle tests when you can. Keeping him safe is priority.

Thank you--we had to work him back to the 7 a.m./7 p.m. schedule a little faster than I'm comfortable with, but would have had to call in sick Monday if I shot any later than 7 a.m. : (

Part of the reason we are not testing more often is the cost of strips, so we're looking at purchasing a ReliOn meter from Walmart to make more frequent testing at least a little more affordable. He starts running and hiding if we test too often also, so have to be careful of that...sigh.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate the help--thanks again :)

Are you giving Izzy a low carb treat after every test? They are pretty good to associate treats with tests. Didn't take mine long to come running towards me when I started getting ready to test. The Relion meters will definitely save you money.

Can I offer a bit of housekeeping advice? It's helpful if you start a new thread (aka "condo") each day rather than adding on to an old thread. I was very confused reading the subject line and then the subsequent posts (and looking at your SS) until I realized the information was from Saturday.

We try to start a new condo every day and link the previous condo to the current one. That makes it easier to back track if you need to find information.

We give him dried chicken treats, etc., the Pure Bites stuff, and that does help so he's not quite so grumpy, although he often refuses to eat them after we've done the ear test/pill giving. He actually doesn't mind the insulin shot much at all. The testing he is kinda grouchy about, and the more often we test, the grouchier he gets. He has IBD and we have to give him metronidazole to keep his poop in a group and he REALLY does not like that pill at all, although we put it in a capsule so he doesn't taste it...we tried to hide it in treats which worked for a while but then he started spitting pill out but eating the treats!
 
I wonder if giving him one special treat that you only give at testing times would help, and separate testing times from pill giving times, so that he doesn't think that the nasty pills and tests go together.
