Hey everyone! Bo has been on insulin now for one week and 3 days, he has started on young again cat food for just under a week now, I have started a spread sheet with his numbers thus far at least. I know that they found a uti when he was at the vet last a week and a 1/2 ago, I have not found any signs of uti since they gave him antibiotic but I'm curious if I need to take him back to check? I have decided to do the curve at home this Saturday, do you have any recommendations? We also have been testing his blood by ear, although we alternate which one we use ..I am wondering if there is anything that may be able to help him heal quicker?

Re UTI: if there aren't any more signs you can probably dispense with a vet visit right now.

Re curve: you'll need to test every 2 hours for a 12 hour cycle. Start with the AM pre shot and end with the PM pre shot. When I do them, I feed lunch to Teasel right after one of the mid day tests so it's 2 hours until the next curve test. That's to avoid the food effect on BG.

Re ear testing: I alternate ears too. They can look a bit rough if testing is frequent like a curve day. Many people put a little Neosporin ointment (not the cream version) with pain relief to help heal them.

I was unable to veiw your spreadsheet. Make sure you make the permissions so that people can see it. Good for you learning to test right away!
 
Yes, I can see it now. :) I suspect that your curve data will show that the insulin dose can go up a little to 1.75 u soon.

To assess BG data we look at the pre shot numbers and the nadir numbers. Ideally you want the PSs to be about the same level and the nadir to be about 50% lower. Your last three days' data follow that pattern well over all.

Good BGs ranges: low to mid 200s for the pre shot numbers and high double digits to low 100s for nadir. If your values are above that you try slow, careful dose increases of no more than 0.25 u at a time to see if you can shift your whole BG range downward. These changes can be made as close together as every 3 cycles if the BGs are very high and then you'd slow down as you get closer to good numbers. If your nadir especially is in the mid double digits that means the dose is too high. Novolin is an insulin that can act quickly to take BG down fairly low. That has to be factored into a dose's assessment. It's safest to err on the side of slightly higher nadir values with Novolin to have a bit of a "cushion".

Those are the bare bones basics. Learning to judge doses and knowing how to adjust will come with experience. Ask a lot of questions! :)
