Just diagnosed yesterday

Hello! My 12 year old “baby” boy was just diagnosed yesterday.. I’m kinda scared.. the vet said he will go blind eventually and that my entire lifestyle will change and if I’m not willing to do this, the other option is not good at all.. how does everybody deal with this??

Welcome to you and your kitty! A diagnosis of diabetes is daunting and we all remember how shocked and frightened we were. I must say, though, your vet's words only added to your stress in a not very useful way. It's not true that a diabetic cat will go blind eventually. Yes, your lifestyle will change - somewhat. There'll be a bigger demand on your time at first but you'll be surprised at how quickly it all becomes second nature.

This is a place for meet and greet so I suggest you go post on the main health forum and give us some basic info:

• what insulin your vet will prescribe and in what dose
• whether you're game to learn to test your kitty's blood glucose at home
• what you feed your kitty
• any other meds or health issues he has.

We can help make this manageable for you!

Oh, my goodness.. it is not true that 'he will go blind eventually'. You can manage the diabetes and prevent that. It is all very overwhelming in the beginning, but it gets better.. really. You can get lots of support and advice here. Welcome!

First thing. Feel scared . That's fine. I was overwhelmed & sad and cross and all sorts of feelings.
Next thing. Vet's are not all seeing and knowing as they have such a wide spectrum of animal healthcare to span. They are not specialists unless they state they are feline specialists. In any case, if that is what he suggested, I suggest a poke in the eye with a cat paw to see if he can find his empathy knob.
Third . You love your cat to pieces else you wouldn't be here. YOU CAN DO THIS.
Forthiness. Your pusscat will not go blind. Some cats are blind but heck, they still lead great lives. My husband's cousin & one of my besty friends is diabetic. Neither are always good. Neither are blind. Far from it.
Sixth. Just find your way to the Main Health forum <--- click link, & let people know what insulin & what food to get started. I came knowing nothing and inside a month my pusscat is doing better.

7th? I missed 5th deliberately to maybe give you a little smile.

Thanks! Well I gave Mew his first shot today... not sure if I actually got it in though... I’m not sure how long it takes for it to take effect and to start seeing signs of improvement!?

Hello all.. just an update, gave Mew his first shot today.. not sure if I actually got it into him and not all over his fur instead.. he is on 2 units of Prozinc... for two weeks, the off to the vet for a curves exam.. my vet said to keep him on the same food as he is one now.. which is friskies .. so I’m hoping he’ll start to feel better soon!

You did good. You can kinda smell when it goes on the fur if you have a sniff .
My first shot , I very nearly dosed my own finger.

Well done for completing the first injection. As noted above, if you do miss (often referred to here as a 'fur shot') you can usually smell the insulin or the fur at the injection site may be a little damp.
