Jack's having a pretty rough 24 hours. His appy took a nose dive and he threw up what little food he got down last night. I'm enticing him a bit with some tuna mixed in the food and so far today he is grazing and keeping the food down.

I got lucky and my old vet was open until noon, I made it there in 5 minutes:)

I went ahead and had them do some injections (cerenia, mirtazapine and b12). I also have a 4 pack of cerenia and a ringer. They want 200ml fluids a day and starting tomorrow 1/4 tab of the cerenia since he already had some today in the shot. I had initially asked for just scripts, but she recommended the shots to start and then have me continue treatment at home. I was in no mood to question it or ask for just pills since she was willing to have me do fluids at home and mentioned just picking up some pepcid versus buying famotidine from her. She also waived the brief re-check fee which was very nice of her since I came on such short notice when they were trying to close for the weekend.

I hope it helps his appy pick up and he gets over this flareup soon. He is just not himself right now and just can't lose any more weight. Paws crossed we get some calories in him.

Now to figure out the best way to get some fluids in him. I hope the larger gauge needles don't bother him too much.

Happy holiday weekend to all the L&L'ers.

YAY! I can't believe it but he is much more interested in food already. I would have thought the shots would have taken a bit longer to kick in. I'm not questioning anything as long as he gets some food in his belly!

We started pred yesterday and he is still a little mopey from a suspected p'tits flareup. The .25u with a touch of R is still keeping him in the reds. It has only been 4 cycles on .25u, but I'm thinking about going up a bit due to starting pred and continued high numbers. .5u would be a pretty big jump, I wonder if maybe a skinny .5u would be good. Any comments or opinions are appreciated.

He did see blue on this dose. I would hold the full six cycles before increasing.

What gauge needles did you get? My vet gave me some smaller ones on request, though it takes longer to get the fluids in. 200 ml seems like quite a bit.

Thanks Wendy.

I got harpoon size and not quite harpoon size :) 18g and 20g, planning on starting with the 20g since it will not hurt as much going in. He is pretty good about sitting still so the slower rate with the 20g should be ok.

He is 9lbs, some quick research said between 2-5% of body weight for cats. At 2% it would be about 100ml. Not sure why she recommended that amount either. Maybe I should do one 200ml today that size and then back off a bit once we know he is better hydrated?

ETA: I also need a bit of reassurance on measuring the amount. The bag is marked 1-9(100ml increments) even though it really looks like it gets fatter in the bottom half even though the measurement lines stay the same. The bag has some fluid above the 1 line(no 0 line)... Is that 100 ml from start to the first line?

Ended up draining to the 1 line and got 150ml in him. He was starting to fidget and he doesn't have a lot of extra skin to hold the fluids.

The mls are counted in between lines. You could run the top of the bag down to the first 100 mls so then you can make sure you are giving the correct amount.

I’ve given fluids to a lot of cats and 200 mls on a daily basis is a lot . What I generally see in cats needing that much (and some do) on an ongoing basis is doing two 100-ml sessions so you don’t overwhelm the heart. Be sure between each session that all fluids have been absorbed completely.

Have you seen our video on How to Give Subq Fluids to your Cat? It might help. :):)

Oh poor Jack! I am glad you got back into the vet and the meds are perky up his appy.

I am sorry that the needles are harpoon size! Yikes, hope they can get you some smaller ones.

This is what I ended up doing, even if I wasted a bit I felt more comfortable since this is still a bit new to me. I watched a few videos including the link you posted and got a good feel for it overall. I had success on the first try so I call that a win.

I stopped at 150ml, sounds like it was a good idea to not give the full 200ml.(He is only 8.8lb now)
It is a short term thing since she thought he was dehydrated due to suspected acute p'titis flareup. Once I finish this bag I don't think we will continue fluids. I'll back off to 100ml to be a little safer, it sounds like 200ml is a bit overkill. This is my old vet that is so-so in my experience, they were the only vet open today unless we went to a 24 hour emergency vet. I've got plenty of needles to do smaller doses. He doesn't have a lot of skin these days so smaller doses should work better since there isn't a lot of excess room for the fluids these days.

I'm already having trouble feeling the bump from the subq so maybe he was a little dehydrated? He's had subq at the vet before so I am familiar with what the fluid bump feels like.

I am sorry that the needles are harpoon size!
I think it was a bit of an exaggeration after being so used to the tiny insulin needles.:) Luckily Jack didn't flinch with the 20g needles, he is a trooper.

Glad to hear Jack is doing better. Hope it continues and he gets beck to his old self soon. I did fluids on my Missy cat for over 3 years. She never flinched. Ever. She was such a sweet, good girl. That has been 15 years ago so don't remember doses or needle size.
