Jack is really on a mission. He's had a half drop of insulin in the last 7 cycles. I had a drop put down for 2 of them, but later I tested over the sink and nothing came out. These BD syringes are hard to get a drop out of. I have to mash the plunger until my thumb aches and then try to do the same in Jack. Based on the low doses sticky, all I can get is a half drop of insulin.

I considered shooting this AM, but will be out and about some and it looks like a small bounce that will be clearing. Given his condition I am being very conservative. Right now diabetes is taking a back seat to the weight loss, anything I can do to get weight on him regardless of other conditions.

He has broken into the single digits for weight, which for such a big framed cat is almost skin and bones:(. I hate to see him slowly starving even though he is getting 3+ big cans of food a day. Hopefully the IM vet has some ideas, but I fear I might get some answers, but no resolution.

I've upped the feeding even more for him until the IM vet, especially since she wants a 12 hour fast which scares me a bit. He will get some serious food after that.

Other then A/D or Recovery, does anyone know of very high calorie food? I'm not worried about carb content right now, just calories.

Hope all are doing well.

Hey Wes, I don't know the answer to the high carb food question but hope someone weighs in soon with some suggestions. And hope the IM vet offers resolution for poor Jack. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Following to see if you hear anything about the high calorie food .. I can't get my civvie Tanner to gain weight, even though he's less than 7# and eating the same amount as Rex, who is 14#!

I looked up the AD and Recovery foods on Dr Lisa’s chart and they are 180 & 183 calories/5.5 oz can respectively. There are several low carb foods on her list that are higher in calories. Most of the Natures Variety Instinct Originals are over 200calories/can with the Beef being the highest at 232 cal and 6 carbs followed by Venison with 228 cal and 3 carbs. Their LID Lamb is also high calorie with 232 and 8 carbs. There are others foods listed as well. Hope the IM vet has answers for you. I’ve had a crush on Jack since you first posted the pics of him on the boat, give him a scritch on the chin from me:bighug:

Neko liked the Weruva Glam N Punk (232 calories per can). Some of the Wild Calling are over 200 calories - though they have gums in them. Wellness Core Chicken, Turkey, Chicken liver also is over 200 calories. I also found that raw contains more calories per volume. Have you ever tried something like the Nature's Variety nuggets? You can buy a small package to try.

With a fast planned for the IM vet, sounds like maybe an ultrasound is planned. They let me break the 12 hour rule for Neko as a diabetic. Sometimes they need reminding about that, though with the amount of insulin Jack has on board, not so much an issue.

THanks Sharon, for some reason I thought they were higher. I must have been on the wrong chart. I didn't see calories on the new sortable google sheet.

I'll pass that along to my little guy.:cat::cat:

One isn't scheduled, but I think she is just thinking ahead in case we get one done. They agreed to a 10 hour fast which helps a bit. They also wanted me to bring insulin and food, but he would be at +2.5 or 3 by the end of the appt so it will most likely just be a skipped shot.

Thanks everyone for the input and well wishes for Mr. Jack.

First pink of the month, not sure where it came from, hopefully just a bounce.

I hope you get some answers Wes. Most likely the IM vet will suggest an ultrasound which means no or little food before the procedure which is the last thing you want to do :(

At the beginning of the year I would have been more worried about the skipped shot. It's crazy how much has changed this year.

I've always had to work at keeping his weight down, not up. There's always something new it seems with these cats.

There used to be a great high calorie food (300 cal/5.5 oz) made by Iams. Sadly, they have discontinued it. I wish I could think of another high calorie food. Will he eat more or is he full with the amount you feed him?

I agree with Wendy that raw diets tend to be more calorie and nutrient dense. Before I switched my Tobey to raw, he ate six ounces of canned food a day but only four ounces of balanced raw maintains his weight.

When Gizmo was sick I got him A/D and Recovery and my vet provided the data sheets for them. They are higher than noted above (unless I am reading them wrong).

The sortable database doesn't have calorie count - use this sheet:

http://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf

And here is Tanya's list:

http://felinecrf.org/canned_food_usa.htm

This is the highest one I am currently feeding:
DAVE's - Naturally Healthy Grain Free Turkey & Giblets
Phos-216
Protien-29
Carb-4
Calories-195/5.5oz
Cost from Chewy-$0.21/oz

Will he eat more or is he full with the amount you feed him?
His appetite is unstoppable, any sign of kitchen activity gets him up. If I mention the word hungry, he gets all giddy and does the feed me dance.
Yesterday he got 23.75 oz of food(a bit more than usual) and would have eaten more:eek::eek::eek: I don't know where the blackhole goes, but the boy can eat!

Too funny, that is what he is eating now with a little chicken and whitefish flavor for variety.
