I'm trying to wrap my head around bouncing. Have read the sticky. Am wondering if the black values I saw last night and am seeing now are signs of a bounce.

I'm also wondering how "disastrous" Quintus's BG looks like based on the spreadsheet. There is so much red and black! I know it's a marathon, and that better a day too high than an hour too low, and too much can look like too little, but still, I do worry about glucotoxicity (particularly as he has a really poorly pancreas already). Negative for ketones yesterday.

What would your assessment of the situation be? (my question is more "what does this look like?" rather than "what should I do")

FWIW: I know we changed doses too frequently and upped fast. Planning to stick to 3 for at least a few days. Transitioning to wet LC food but not there yet.

Thanks for your feedback!

Keep in mind, I've only been at this since September, so these are just my observations and hopefully you'll get some more experienced takes.

To me 11.12 looks like a bounce from the 245, 12.12 looks like a bounce from the 317, and 13.12 looks like a bounce from the 355. Quintus thinks those numbers are abnormally low right now, and hopefully, over time, as he spends more time in those numbers, or even lower numbers, his body will adjust and the bounces settle a bit. Some cats just love to bounce. Here is an extreme bouncing example:

But, at least in theory, the more time the cat spends in good numbers, the new normal is adjusted and the less the pancreas freaks out and tries to rebel from them.

It sucks seeing all the reds and blacks in the beginning (or ever), look at Asia's SS, we've been there too. Maybe other people with cats/panc issues can give you some ideas/interventions to support the pancreas during this time of transition. I really don't know much about it, but the little I've read is that if pain is an issue, you should address that because pain can also increase BGs.

Other than that, it's an arduous waiting game, not too much you can really do about it except keep on keeping on until you find the right dose. I think the diet transition might really make a difference too, I know that's slow going and it's frustrating to wait it all out whilst your cat is swimming in sugar. :bighug:

Thanks a lot for chiming in! His pancreatitis doesn't seem painful (chronic kind) and he's been on a long course of meds to fix his gallbladder (which doesn't help the pancreas when it's acting up). He's still on antibiotics for the pancreatitis, I'm giving him his convenia shot tomorrow. Do non-European people get convenia too? (antibiotic shot, lasts 10-15 days, closer to 10 says my vet, based on clinical observations).

And to "clear" a bounce... just hold on tight and don't change anything?

Most of us are very wary of Convenia for several reasons...the main one being that IF your cat has a reaction to it, there's nothing that can be done about it. It actually can stay in the body for up to 60 days. There have been reports of death associated with it too. Also, it's only approved use is for skin infections

That being said, there are times it makes sense....like if you're dealing with a feral that you're unlikely to ever touch again. More information on Dr. Lisa's site (Convenia--worth the risk?)

Now for the bouncing.....I mostly agree with @Stacy & Asia .....while 200's are still high, his body has gotten used to living in the 500+ range.....so even though he's not dropping anywhere near low, his body is still reacting like he is

His liver releases those stored sugars and hormones to bring him back up to where it's used to being. The only thing you can do is wait for those sugars and hormones to clear the body (which can take up to 3 days)

Hopefully (with time) his body will re-learn that it's OK to be in yellow numbers and stop freaking out.....and then gradually learn that blues are OK....and then greens!!

That’s helpful to me too as I think Silver bounced today.
