Orion is new here,Diabetes & FIV positive

Orion was just diagnosed in Nov. with diabetes. He already had a diagnosis of FIV from 3 yrs. ago when I had taken him in.He is apprx. 9 yrs.old and had a ruff life until
I rescued him. I was scared to inject him but knew it meant his life! We are both getting used to the injections,he does not mind at all.He is loosing his teeth ,i have questions about that? He needs surgery for his teeth?I guess they will remove most of them...They are decaying.
 
Welcome, Asia and Orion! We just went through a dental for our diabetic cat and will be going again next week for our non-diabetic cat. The diabetic (Zulu) ended up not having any teeth extracted but the other cat will for sure.

A couple of thoughts - first, it's possible that tooth infections are driving up Orion's blood glucose levels. Having the infected teeth removed could help regulate his numbers once he heals up. The vet will hopefully check Orion's blood glucose a few times during the surgery to make sure he doesn't dip too low from the anesthesia. That said, every cat is different. Zulu's blood glucose spiked high during his dental work, but dropped back down today. Second, it's okay if they have to remove most of them. We had a cat who had all but one taken out and did fine without them. They adapt very quickly and are much happier once the infection is removed.
 
TY,he was on antibiotics but its done now. I have to save for the surgery for him its quite expensive between 500-800. Its a lot at once, he has been just diagnosed with the diabetes and a need for insulin.I am doing the best I can with my income which is so little,but his life means so much to me.I had taken him in 3yrs. ago when no one wanted him, neutered him,shots,etc... The insulin is costly & i want to get it under control,he goes next week for blood panels? The insulin units could go up,not sure yet.
 
Thank you Zulu's Mom ,you are right he did have infected teeth w/2 abscess. I am going to try real hard to save the money for the surgery?I love this little boy:cat:
