It seems Lila is in the final days of life. Lila is sleeping mainly and not eating very well at all. Should we inject?

I don't have much info to go on. If Lila is not eating, that will cause other issues and complicate the diabetes. I had the same issue with Leo earlier in the year, and am not treating him for small cell lymphoma (SCL). One of his meds is prednisolone, and that really stimulated his appetite. There are other appetite stimulants as well.

If Lila is not eating at all, then I probably would not dose her. And that symptom can have different root causes - so a vet visit would be good.

Yes think we will need to see vet. Lila is fluctuating between not eating and eating a little. We have some Royal Canin recovery diet which in the last 12 hours she seems to have taken to. Think it is high carb though as her bg is much higher. So don't want to cause a ketone issue too. We injected her once she was eating something but seems like we will need to increase insulin while on this food. Every day is different it seems! Wondering about requesting B12 injections but don't want her to have blood tests at present as she is so frail. Not sure if vets will give B12 without though? The pancreatic enzymes have made some real difference regarding her stools but no weight gain.

If you're fairly sure you can get food into her I'd make sure she gets her insulin.....she's running high enough that she needs it even if she isn't eating as well.

It may also help her feel better and want to eat more on her own.

OK we did wonder if bg readings even without food would make injecting safe, thanks for confirming that. Also the insulin does not seem to be making the usual drop not sure if that's to do with her condition ( ie body not utilising it). Presume we can also inject a little more frequently than 12 hours to try and get some sensible numbers rather than increase dose at this point?

There have been some people who shot Caninsulin every 8 hours, but it's VERY hard on the caretaker.

I'd probably suggest increasing the dose instead of trying TID dosing

How old is your insulin?

Tagging @JanetNJ ....she has more experience with Caninsulin/Vetsulin

Only started this insulin about 5 days ago. We can do 8 hourly for a few days possibly to get a more even coverage esp while feeding little & often right now.?

I don't know enough about Caninsulin to really advise you on trying TID dosing. I know it's almost never recommended.

I'd stick with BID until you hear from some others....it's 1am here so there aren't a whole lot of people online, but hopefully you'll hear from someone else soon.

You might want to add the ? prefix to your subject line and edit it to say something like "TID Caninsulin dosing???"

Thank you, will do that.

I've never tried 3 doses a day. You test frequently so I don't see a reason not to try it. Shoot less with lower preshots though. Maybe start with 0.8 every 8 hours and see what happens.

Try giving some oral b12 and see if it helps her appetite.

Thank you, just collecting b12 injection from vet for us to give her. Thankfully vet in agreement without blood test!
