Goober is 8 years old and until a couple months ago still acted like he was a tiny baby. I have never had a cat make me laugh as much as him especially when he does somersaults. I knew there was something wrong with him when he dropped 6 lb which seemed like overnight and he has been obsessed with water... I dreaded the words I knew I was going to hear my baby has Type 2 diabetes. I spent the first day and night crying and then decided okay what do I need to do to help my baby. I have other cats and as much as I love them all goober holds a very very special place in my heart. I am not sure if I'm posting this in the right place I'm hoping this is an introduction post it's very difficult to kind of figure out where to go here but I'm winging it. Have a blessed night.
 
You are correct, this is an introduction forum, so you are in the right place. Welcome to you and Goober! Getting the diagnosis is overwhelming, but it will get better. You will get lots of good advice and support here. You can post any questions you have on the Main Health Forum.

When you have specific questions, we will need more like current/ideal weight, insulin type, insulin dose, food, etc. But for me, you got the most important part for now, a picture of your beautiful boy!

Thank you I don't have any specifics just yet my baby was just diagnosed on the 18th of this month. I have ordered a test kit what should be here tomorrow and I'm trying to come up with the money for the insulin syringes excetera. I do currently have him on the DM wet cat food and that's about all I can do for him at this moment which absolutely kills me but I can only do what I can. I am sure I will have lots and lots of questions along the way LOL I feel blessed to have found this forum and all of you knowledgeable kind people.
 
Welcome!! we are glad you are here, there's lots of people here that can help you with a lot of issues, don't be afraid to ask, and very important we've all gone through the same thing we get how you feel and as they said before it gets better so hang in there.

Regarding the food and money you do not necesarily need to feed a prescription diet ( they are usually more expensive ) you need to feed a high protein low carb food ,there's a list of food we all use this is the link http://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf, you may want to start looking at it and maybe you can find one that suits you better, its ok as long as is 10% or less in carbs.

What insulin is your vet considering?

Where are you located maybe there are people in the same area that can give you suggestions on where to buy cheaper supplies
 
Thank you I am in Sonoma County in California. The doctor has prescribed glargine which I guess is also Lantus I am not sure that part confuses me. I don't even know the dosage he will be getting as soon as I get everything I need including the insulin I am going to be taught by the doctor and OR technician at the office how to test his blood and give injections. Thank you for the heads up on the food with everything else I need to buy food at $2 a can made me want to pull my hair out.
 
OMGosh what a price difference!!!!! Thank you thank you!! Nearly 300 is ALOT with everything else I'm buying but 110$ I can breathe and enjoy my holiday. Happy Thanksgiving all:bighug:

Dm wet is ok, don't feed the dry. Most of us feed fancy feast classic or Friskies pate foods.

Thank you that was very helpful. Now when I go to the vet's office on Monday I will kind of know what to expect her to show me. That isn't as horrible as I expected it to be for my baby.

try Friskies classic pate - $0.57/ 5.5oz can at Walmart, or Fancy Feast classic - $0.68/2.8 oz can - the prices are per San Diego Walmart.
No need for prescription foods.
 
Thanks for that information I actually looked up the nutritional value of the Hill's Science Diet DM and it has added vitamins and other things that the vet said that goober needs. My cousin did the DM with her Kitty and insulin and was able to turn the diabetes around that is my hope I am afraid if I do not give him the DM the chances of that will be slimmer... Has anybody here had luck with turning diabetes around without the DM? Using Friskies or Fancy Feast with the insulin....
 
I think most people here use Fancy Feast or Friskys I use Instinct manly because we don't get many of the Fancy Feast varieties and no Friskys where I live and a lot of people have achieved regulation and even remission on them

That said I think you and your vet are the ones that should decide what is best for him you know his needs better than anyone
 
Does anyone have any ideas where I can get testing strips Lancers and syringes at a better price than Amazon or at the vet? Thank you all of your opinions are so valuable and appreciated:cat:
 
I usually get 300 30g lancets from our locally owned pharmacy for $6-7. Our CVS is way overpriced when it comes to those. But walmart might be a good place to look as well. You can use a human meter, I'm not sure which one requires the smallest blood sample. Maybe the ReliOn Micro?

Just here to say welcome! You've found a great place, Dave's diagnosis was about 3 weeks ago and I am constantly on here learning and everyone is so full of support.
