Last year, my 12 year old cat Eddie had a urinary obstruction. Doing research on it I came across Catinfo.org and switched him to a wet food diet. Yesterday, Eddie was diagnosed with Feline Diabetes. I have consulted Catinfo.org for hours and am a little overwhelmed right now. Before doing more research and ordering the right Home Testing kit I wanted to start him on a good low carb/high protein diet right away. I have come across cat food not suited for a diabetic diet on this website but have not seen many suggestions for 'good' cat food (other than Fancy Feast). It is probably because every cat's needs are different but to get me started are there any recommendations of a good brand out there that works for most cats? Thank you so much in advance for your responses.

I don't know of anything that works for 'most' cats as they all seem to be very different, and even the same cat can change his/her mind about what they will eat every once and a while. I guess if I was going to pick one to recommend it would be Weruva Chicken Frick A' Zee. You can see in my signature the four that I have in my 'arsenal'.

The general idea, as you probably already know from Dr. Pierson’s blog, is to keep your wet food below 10% of carbs, moderate fat and low Phosphorus – below 200 per 100 Kcal. HERE is the latest food chart that many of us use. Friskies classic pate and Fancy feast classics are the most budget friendly foods but both are high in P levels and may not be suitable for a kitty with kidney problems.
My personal choice is Tiki Cat brand – poultry flavors like Puka Puka Luau and Koolina Luau with Wild Salmon as an occasional treat but it is very expensive. My girl needs about 180 – 200 Kcal per day - just less than 2 x 2.8 oz cans so it is way over most budgets.. . My local Petco just recently started to carry Tiki Cat – it is currently $1.29 / can – a bit better than what I used to paying @pet specialty store. Another low carbs/ low P brand is Weruva BFF, also not cheap, sadly. Tiki Cat is 0% carbs – not every kitty does well on zero carbs.

Don't waste your time waiting for the order - get human glucometer Relion from your nearest Walmart. Relion micro or Confirm are very popular choices here.

Oops, I forgot to add this:
It is imperative that you add extra water to his food, then. Cats have very low thirst drive and counting on them to drink "enough" is not such a good idea. I add about 1 Tablespoon of water to each of my kitty's meals to make it rather like a stew - she has between 50 and 100 ml extra each day.
Thanks a lot FurBabiesMama. I will try these out. The more recommendations the better since Eddie, too, tends to get tired of his food after a while.
