Hi Roberta - I'm not sure where Steph is these days, but if you don't mind someone else chiming in, it's fine to feed Chloe more if she's hungry. Keep an eye on her weight and make sure she stays in a healthy range, but as long as she doesn't gain too much, it sounds like some more food might be a good idea.

I agree with Djamila. Feed her if she's hungry. Chuck is always hungry if he's running high, which is A LOT lately.
Just as an example: I feed him 4.5oz of food at his for his main meals. Then he gets the rest of the can split into two snacks. One at +4 the other at +6 and then a half ounce of fancy feast pate at +8. When he was on prozinc he couldn't have any snacks past +6 or he'd shoot right up. But every cat is different.
Find what works for Chole. You might need to increase dose a little depending on how much more she eats. The numbers should tell you. And of course keep her hydrated and check for ketones. We have tested so much for ketones the last few weeks I feel like Chuck is getting used to seeing me when he pees!

Be careful she doesn't eat so much she pukes. Try freezing some food and leaving it out for her on the days you can't be home to feed snacks. She might get some of it if she's hungry enough to keep the others away from it. Hard when you have other cats there too. I'm lucky that Kitty doesn't like Chucks food so he leaves it alone.

@StephG I'm sorry I haven't been posting lately. I've been extremely stressed at work and had a stomach flu or something that totally knocked me out night before last. I've been coming home from work and going straight to bed. Also, I ran out of wet cat food yesterday and have been giving them the dry RC glycobalance. Last night, I didn't get a BC reading or give a shot. Chloe is suffering for it today as there has been no yowling for food this morning. She did eat some treats and as soon as I get showered and dressed, I'll go to the store and get cat food.

Oh sorry to hear that. Please test for ketones ASAP. Higher carb food plus no shot can spell trouble quick.

Thanks, Steph. After sleeping all day, I feel much better. Chloe is acting a bit subdued. I'll get a ketone test tomorrow, The Chewy order was outside my front door this morning and she's back on the 9lives. She's not eating as much.

I hope she doesn't have Ketones. Change in appetite is cause for concern.

Happy to hear she's back to normal. Chuck would probably eat that much if I let him buy he was a little chubby before Diabetes. We seem to be maintaining his weight with what he gets now.
I would love to have a warm Thanksgiving but in upstate NY, it's not going to happen! Hope you have a great Thanksgiving too!

Thanks. I have to adjust her shot time one hour earlier to about 6:30 am. I found out I'm supposed to be at work by 7:30 instead of 8
o. It takes me about 40 min to get there, so I'll have to leave the house by 6:45 am. Even though it's warm here, it's still pitch black outside at that time. I let Chloe eat as much as she wants. She's not gaining weight, but Chico is a bit fat now. I guess I let Chloe get too fat before she was diagnosed. This morning, Chloe yowled so loud and so long that I told her she should become an opera singer.

It is possible she went low. Next time she does it I would test her to see. 1.5 on a 205 could drop her too much. The red preshot this morning seems to suggest that too.
Maybe try a 1.25 on a low 200 like that? Only way to tell for sure is to get a mid cycle test.

1.25 on a 280 ps on 11/11 gave her a nice pm preshot.
I think if the dose is adjusted slightly you might be able to keep her from bouncing so much. Might. I thought the same for Chuck too but he is still bouncy but not as bad as before.
It's such a tricky dance when you are trying to find that fine tuned ideal dose. Too much and they bounce... Too little and they go higher anyway. But I think her no shot and fur shot numbers suggest that she goes higher from a bounce than she does without insulin. She needs to have the insulin because she had Ketones before so skipping really isn't ideal. You don't skip often and only when you're keeping her safe so I don't think that's an issue.
Sorry I'm rambling on! Thinking out loud. Short version: I think fine tuning the dose for below 250ish to 1.25 MIGHT help her bounce less and even out her numbers. It might help her nighttime episodes too if they're caused by going low.

Yes, I agree with Steph. Looking at the bounciness of your numbers and your description of her hunger, I'm guessing she is going too low. I know that testing during the day isn't an option with work, but getting mid-cycle numbers on the weekends would really help with adjusting her dose and keeping her safe. For now, Iwould follow Steph's suggestion of lowering the dose when you have a lower PS number.

@StephG, @Djamila Chloe's hunger is incredible! She eats for about an hour! When I woke up this morning, I found a trail of empty cat food cans leading to the kitchen. One was on the bed, the next was on the floor, which I was sure to trip over, and then another where the bedroom reaches the kitchen. Just now I found a lid under my pillow. The yowling is also driving me nuts! I figured out what her yowling in the middle of the night was. She often yowls as she carries around empty food cans. Her numbers are pretty flat now, should I increase her dose?

I'm so sorry to hear that Chloe is suffering such awful hunger! That must be so hard for her! Getting her BG numbers under control will really make a difference for her in that regard, but I can't really give dosing advice without mid-cycle numbers. I don't know how low her current dose is taking her, so I don't know if she needs more insulin or less insulin. After you get some mid-cycles this weekend post again and I'd be happy to see if there is something that can be done with the dose that might help ease her hunger a bit.

Roberta, has Chloe ever had her thyroid levels checked? Hyperthyroidism can cause cats to be very hungry and also very vocal.

She's had multiple tests, but this hyperthyroidism never was mentioned. She's due for a follow-up with the vet soon, so I'll ask about that.

My civvie carries around toys at night and howls. It's not every night but when he does it wakes me up in a panic. It's similar to the noise they make before they puke.

I would definitely get a curve done this weekend. Plus other mid cycles as often as you can.

Sorry, haven't checked in for awhile. I've been sick myself with a cold. I'm home again today and after I called into work around 5:30 am, I went back to sleep. I woke at about 7:00, which is very late for Chloe's AMPS. She was crying, so I gave her food right away without testing. She's still moving empty cat food cans around during the night and making yowling noises (It's difficult to meow when you are carrying a tin in your mouth). She's been very bouncy, as usual. I know I've been rather inconsistant with testing, and more importantly, with giving the insulin. I like to wait until she's finished eating, but she eats non-stop for about an hour. I will try to get a mid-cycle today. Oh, the past 2 days, someone has been peeing outside the litter box. Whoever it is has no ketones.

This made me laugh because I did the same thing the other day! Someone overshot the litter box so I went ahead and grabbed a ketone test!

It's not necessary to wait until she's done eating to give her shot. I give Chuck his shot while he's eating and have the whole time. If I wait until after he runs off for a nap and I can't find him or get to him.
