Hi all,

Day 1 of Levemir is entertaining! Interesting: no mirtazapine yet, but she's keen to eat. I'd love to stop the Mirtz, so hope that continues.

Not sure whether I should try to stall Girlie's drops on day 1 of Levemir or just let her go down. Her drop at +4 was pretty big (174 pts in an hour), so I did give her some gravy. The 1 U of Lantus was dropping her quickly without food intervention. I'm not sure how long the Lantus depot will still influence her numbers...? I'd almost just like to give her 6% or 8% only and see where she goes, but I don't want to start another bounce if she dives too quickly (though +4 might have done that already).

AMPS 454 (6% food)
+2=574
+3= 466 (-108 pts): 6% food
+4= 292 (-174 pts): 16% gravy 2 tsp
+5= 203 (-89 pts): 8% food

Max update: mouth sore today (even with am bupe), but eating slurry. Hope more bupe at noon and in pm will help...poor boy. :( Very happy with all the TLC, though: a little purr machine, as usual. :-)

Surf safely tonight! And be steady! :-)

We have POO! But too soft and too stinky... and on her feet, and on my office chair... (gotta google how to clean poo off a cloth office chair)... and she's mad at me for cleaning her up...sigh!

And now we have Pukas! Keeping mom on her toes today... :-) Just so glad there's no carpeting in the house...phew!

And now we're green! AMPS = 454; +6 = 77 :D

And it's only noon! Yowsa! My head is spinning right now... :p

Diving and puking, Girlie? It's the weekend, relax a little, your bean needs a break. I too wonder how long for the Lantus to work out of her system.

Poor Max, can you call the vet and see if he can have a little higher dose? Or do you think it's wearing off too quickly?

I know, poor Max! He was pretty drugged out after his 6 pm bupe, and I was a bad mom and fell asleep before his middle of the night shot, but he seemed okay ... that might be it. I'm going to give him another shot now, and then see how he is later on. They said a shot every 6 - 8 hours...but I'll ring if he's not happier after shot number 2.

The Lantus depot can influence 4-6 cycles. Or you could be seeing that strong initial reaction some cats see. 8% food is good, if she'll keep it down. Poor girl.

On Lantus, I usually stop feeding her at +7, but I'm not sure what to do with Levemir: do I keep feeding her past +7?

Too much Miralax: poo disaster and pukas; too little Miralax: no poo. I thought I had the balance right, but clearly not! After all her poos this week, though, I didn't even think there was anything left in her. :banghead:

I'll stick with the 8% and let her get a reduction if she wants to. Good to know that the Lantus can influence 4 - 6 cycles still. Once we get through those and it's just Levemir, then we'll adjust the dose as required.

Thanks again, Wendy!

Sorry about the pudding poo and pukas. :( I hope Max is doing better.

An active Levemir cycle will have an onset at approximately +4 and a nadir around +8 - +10. However, please keep in mind every cat is different (ECID). Data collection will offer you a better picture of YOUR cat's response to either of these insulins.

Thanks, Lizzie! I'm going to have to add "pudding poo" to my list of new favourite phrases... :-)

We decided some fresh air and sunshine was in order, so we all made a trip to the garden while I hung out my washing. It breaks my heart, though, how painful it is for Girlie to go down and try to climb up stairs: going up is harder for her right now. I remember how painful it was for me to do that before my hip replacements, so I can only imagine what it's like for her. Usually I try to carry her, but she did it herself before I could help her today. We're running out of arthritis options, so I might ask the vet if it's time to try some bupe. I hate to give her another med that will make her dopey, though - we'll have to see. I know you're struggling with that with Gizmo, as well.

Max is well enough to try to jump over the big fence to go see what's going on in the big bad world! I need to get the cat mesh guy in to sort out a way to prevent that... :-)

Neko had bupe for a couple of years for her arthritis. She was on a dose that helped the pain, but did not make her dopey. Bupe is dosed by weight, and there is usually a range of dose. If a dose makes them dopey, back off the dose a bit. It made a huge difference for Neko's QOL.

That's great to know, Wendy. Did you give it every day, or only as required?

We can't do the Zydax version of Pentosan, and I don't want to keep using the Meloxicam due to the kidney issues. But it's hard to watch each step be so painful for her. I'll ask the vet about bupe for her. We'll probably have to try a very small dose at first.

We tried Gabapentin a while ago (pre-diabetes), and only 0.5 ml knocked her for six - and the vet had written a script for 1 ml am/pm.

The Phenobarbitone has quite an affect on her: she's a different cat on just 0.2 ml, alert and lively, but 0.3 ml makes her dopey; still, we have to control the head nods that come from her idiopathic epilepsy somehow. Poor girl!

I see you have your hands full, once again! Bless your heart. :bighug: You take such good care of your kitties! :)

You know what has given my day great joy? I am SO GLAD that I did not mop the floors last night as I'd planned to! LOL And I am SO glad that she did not do pukas under the bed this time...

It's the little things that make life special... :joyful:

It seems like I haven't had a moment to draw breath. I hope Maggie-girl is swimming beautifully in blues and greens for you today... I've got an appointment with a mop, though, and I just googled how to clean poop off a chair, so that's my next task for the day! Always good to learn a new life skill, eh?

A bit nervous now - she's been 94 since +8: I assume this is how Levemir works and I just gird those BOS and shoot green with 0.75 of Levemir? It's going to be a PJ party tonight: I can just feel it! :nailbiting: o_O

:D:D:D Love the long stretch of greens.

Since she's been flat, she should bump up with food and then you have a few hours to onset where she can continue to rise. With Lev, you do have to get used to shooting lower.

Thanks, Wendy. I just wasn't sure if the first day on Lev was the day I'd have to shoot greens! Glad she came up to 131 at PMPS - easier to shoot blues. But I'm prepared for shooting greens in future as I understand this is how Lev works. I'll monitor her closely tonight.

What a nice day it turned out to be for her after her rather unfortunate morning, poor thing. I gave her a Cerenia (1/2 tablet) tonight as she appeared nauseated. I have the Ondansetron (zofran), but I wasn't sure if I should introduce a new insulin and a new med on the same day; at least I've used the Cerenia before.

Who knows what tonight and tomorrow will bring, but is it ever nice to see a flat row of greens (of all things!) for a change... :D

Just looked at Girlie's SS...Wow! :D I really hope this trend continues! Darrah, you must be having the best day ever in a while, huh? :bighug:

Thank you, Stacy! Flat greens are a nice change from flat high blacks, for sure! :) Puddle poo and pukas aside - - it's been a lovely day indeed. And Max is feeling better, too. Joy!
I'm realistic, and am prepared for ups and downs ahead, though, and will monitor her closely tonight. But so far, so good on day 1 of Levemir. :D As long as she feels better and isn't continually in the danger zones, I'll be a very happy momma. :p

+3:30 = 85
1 tsp 16% PPChicken + 1/4 tsp 16% Chick Magnet gravy

Nice! She came up nicely on that food. It may be that the 0.75 is a bit too much for her but look at the nice flat cycle, well later in the cycle .

Here is what Wendy wrote to me re: arthritis. My vet is looking into the suggestions and will get back with me but it might something here might help with Girlie.

Thanks for that info, Lizzie. I did a quick search, and we can get Cosequin for dogs here, but I don't see one for cats, like you have in the U.S. My mind is really foggy here, but I know I've asked @Bron and Sheba about this: I just can't remember what she said! I'll have to look back on posts re: Australian joint supplements for cats.

Do let me know how you go with Gizmo. I love the idea of using fish oil, etc., but I don't want to add too many things into the mix all at once as we've just started the new insulin.

BTW: Are you going to go back to the AVJ, or is that out for you now?

I think Girlie likes the levemir! ;)
Good to hear Max is feeling better too.

I think you're right, Bron! It's a bit of an adventure so far today, but these numbers are so much nicer than the ones before, and she seems to be hanging in steadier (and lower) numbers for much longer. I know @Marje and Gracie suggested that Girlie really had a problem with duration on the Lantus; just day one with Levemir, but she's looking better from that perspective.

Sleepless in Sydney, but happy! She's sleeping, of course, and is very annoyed every time I get up to go to the computer: she wants me to stay put so we can cuddle. :-)

It's interesting watching her react to the Levemir/Lantus combination tonight. She's having trouble staying out of lime green, and given that she probably (?) hasn't reached her nadir-time yet, I've given her more of the 16% gravy/solid food combination, as she's hungry.

We'll see how this works!

PMPS: 131
+2=113: no fud (sleepy)
+3=56: 16% gravy 3 tsp
+3:30=85: 16% fud 1 tsp + 1/2 tsp 16% gravy
+4 = 119: 8% fud 1/2 tsp
+4:30 = 85: 12% gravy 2 tsp
+5 = 83: 12% gravy 2 tsp
+5:30= 65: 16% gravy 3 tsp/16% fud 2 tsp

:woot:Wow!!! What a first day on Lev. Amazing to see all that green on day 1:D

Hope you find what works for her Arthritis:(. Wendy's suggestion of the bupe sounds like a good idea if supplements and acupuncture alone won't take the edge off.
Hope Girlie finds some real stability on Lev. It would be wonderful to happen soon and that you still get to make your trip to visit mom for the holidays:)
