Wild ride for Asia last night, will be reducing to 1.75 this morning. Using the 30 min late shot time last night to eek me towards DST, so I still have an hour to go before shot time. Looks like she is bouncing now, and hopefully that will settle quickly. I gave a BCS dose last night of 1.5, but the syringe was a bit wonky so it was probably closer to 1.75 anyway.

Got another valuable bit of info. High numbers make Asia very snoozy, is that a common thing? Or just her? Also, civvie Toki seems to know when Asia's numbers are high. Toki is my daughters' cat and always, always sleeps with them. She's also the family brat and is way more likely to annoy Asia than to comfort her, but we are seeing a whole new side to Toki. Toki has been sleeping next to Asia, in my bed, cleaning and nurturing her, several times since diabetes diagnosis and I've noticed it's usually when Asia's numbers are high. Cats seem to know things like that, it's weird.

Asia loved the gravy on the FF, but she licked it off and wasted all the meat. Was just wondering if anyone has made their own HC gravy? I thought it might be a good idea to make some and freeze it for quick thaw/low numbers. I can make a bone broth reduction, but most of the thickeners are grain based (wheat flour, corn starch) which is where the carbs come from, I assume? I don't know if that's what the pet food companies use. You could use gelatin, but that would be low/no carb. If it's hard to calculate the carb content for homemade, what about store bought people gravy (assuming no onions and other dangerous to cat ingredients)?

I'm not sure this reduction was warranted. Had some funky syringes where the zero line easily had enough for .25 insulin. Perhaps she got 2.25. I had to open 2 more bags of syringes just now to find a good one and give her an accurate 1.75. There is a pass for failed reduction, right? I won't need to wait as many cycles if she starts throwing lots of high numbers on this dose? I really need to figure this caliper thing out, read the post, watched the videos, it just didn't make a ton of sense to me. Will keep trying.

I found I had lots of wonky syringes and started using digital calipers. Have you seen this?

That being said I hope the reduction sticks.
Yes, I've looked at it many times and it just confused me. It's making a little more sense now. I got hung up on finding the most perfect syringes part, it was hard to see ring clearly while the orange caps are still on. I guess I got lucky and they were all pretty good until recently, now I can definitely see the difference between a near perfect one because I have a lot of crap ones. I have a few here with more than .5 unit space before the zero line, and even some with diagonal lines instead of horizontal ones! o_O

?

Yep I had to do a reduction for Webber his first go around on Lantus when he dipped below 50 during his AM dose and again in his PM dose. Then went back up a little on his dose after one day of reduction. However, they used to say I had BOS (balls of steel) :joyful: He was getting nothing but greens back then.

Good luck and I hope the reduction sticks :bighug:

If you learn to use the calipers you can forget about the lines on the syringe and simply measure from the disc/ring. To get the proper dose measured on the calipers, find one of your "perfect" syringes (zero line matches up with the disc/ring) and draw up your dose. Then hold up the calipers to the syringe and move the gage to match the dose 1.75. Tighten the knob on the calipers so that the arms are locked. Write down the number (in mm) on the calipers display. that's all there is to it. Leave the calipers set and locked. When you draw up your next dose measure it from the disc/ring. I always make sure to turn on the calipers for a minute before I use them, just to make sure that they are still set for my dose (sometimes they might get knocked around). The Harbor Freight calipers mentioned in Marje's video on how to use calipers is the one we all use.

Good luck with the reduction.

Let's see where her numbers land when the bounce is over, to see if the reduction sticks. Before last night, Asia's SS did look like she might be angling for a reduction soon.

For HC, I stopped using FF with gravy because Neko's tummy didn't like the gravy. I then moved to HC with potatoes - Weruva makes some in the 16-17% range in their pouches, and the canned Grandma's Chicken Soup for over 20%. First Mate also uses organic meat and a lot of potatoes to boost their carb% so it's a decent quality HC. Another option I thought of but didn't use was the Honest Kitchen Prowl and Grace freeze dried raw. It has a lot of potato in it. I can't remember which was which, but one of them was MC and one HC. I ended up not going that route cause in Canada all you could buy was huge packages of it.

Good morning, Ducia is totally snoozy in high numbers now and has "I am not well" facial expression. It is funny because in the beginning she was the same when her numbers went below 100.. Some experienced members here use mixing a few drops of honey with their cat's regular LC foods to steer the numbers up. Honey, being natural product is by far better than FF gravy. I hope Asia clears her bounce quickly.

Thank you so much, this is a great explanation and I will try it tonight. I've had the calipers for a couple weeks, the ones from harbor freight and I just couldn't figure out how to do it right. :)

Yes! At first she didn't seem bothered with the high numbers, the low numbers made her Our of sorts, but now the high numbers seem to make her snoozy and low numbers make her have more energy.

I have honey, and I would be happy to just use that if she were more food motivated, but the FF gravy is something different and exciting, so at least I know she will enthusiastically eat that when I need her to. Her regular food she only eats when she feels like it.

I was going to also suggest honey for boasting. It's faster than opening a can of FF and squeezing out the gravy and I think easier on the some tummies that are sensitive.

My civvie, Forrest, use to stick like glue to Bubba when he had ketones and we were trying to knock them out using Novolin R. Forrest would preen him and once I found him cleaning the residual blood off the ear I had tested. It was so sweet!

As far as the calipers go, you need to remove the orange cap in order to see the zero line.

I had to make Darwin homemade HC food because he mainly refused anything but his regular FF pate. I would mix a little (0.1-0.3cc) of Karo syrup or honey into a little pate - he always gobbled that right up :joyful: Such a weird guy!

Hope Asia decides to clear that bounce quickly!
