Looking for a new food that has lower phosphorus than FF. Maggie will only eat pate, so that narrows my choices. A local feed store carries some Dave's brand. I was looking for the grain-free that Lizzie is feeding Gizmo. Didn't have that, but had Dave's 95% in chicken and turkey. Trying the turkey mixed with some FF. It has small pieces of bone in it. Maggie is eating it, but is underwhelmed.

Sending my love and strength to Michelle in this difficult time.

I've been feeding Allen Purrfect Bistro.....he really likes the chicken and will eat the turkey. It's a bit higher in p than we would like but he is fussy! Wellness Core is lower in P and Weruva has some too that are lower in P (but they are not pate).
Nice start for Maggie!

ETA: we use a p binder

Happy Wednesday! I found Halo (spot's pate) at Petsmart, not sure if you have one near you? Phosphorus wasn't too bad, but I don't know how the kitties like it just yet, I'll put it into the rotation when I run out of my old label Wellness cans.

Thanks Christie, I'll check that out! Let me know how your crew like it.

Good morning, Alicia,

about foods: I switched Ducia to Tiki Cat because ,I believe, it is the lowest P in Dr. Pierson's chart - 150/ 100Kcal.
She eats canned poultry flavors only , the texture is pulled chicken.

However, they make Pouches also - the texture is not pate but rather baby food like Gerber's. Perhaps you can try introducing it little by little by mixing it with FF pate an see if she likes it. Low P LC foods are so hard to find! Ducia eats poultry Puka Puka Luau - chicken only and Koolina Luau - chicken breast with powdered egg yoke. No seafood.

We are in process of Semi Raw homemade intro. I grind boneless chicken tight using the smallest blade and then mix it with water - almost (but not exactly) like pate. I think you can control the pate-ish texture by experimenting with how much water to mix in. Ducia likes stews - so I add 2T water per 1.5 oz. It took me less then 20 min to prepare week worth batch of food including washing the grinder time.

Tiki is awfully expensive :mad:. I hope to save some $ in addition to controlling what she eats.

Thanks Tanya! I'll look for those pouches. Does "Semi Raw" mean it is cooked to some degree? Do you just buy regular chicken from your local grocer? Do you have to add anything to make it a balanced diet? Sorry so many questions.

You can buy chicken from the grocer or the butcher if there is NOTHING added (ie spices, herbs, etc). You do need to make it balanced. FoodFurLife sells a premix that you add to the meat with some water. There are other recipes that you can buy all the ingredients and make your own mix. Pork, venison, turkey, etc are all fine to give.

Are you feeding raw, Mandy?

Yes, i cook per Dr. Pirson, here is how she put it: ".. The chicken or turkey cat food that I make usually ends up being ~25 – 50% cooked and ~50 – 75% raw but you should aim for at least a 10-20% surface cook." I baked boneless chicken tight with skin on at 350 degrees preheated oven for 12 min. Only the surface got cooked - the insides were raw.
HERE is her blog (it's sort of my Bible).
Do you have to add anything to make it a balanced diet?
Yes, premix from EZComplete Fur Cats. Wonderful site, great easy to understand instruction. I paid $42 w/shipping cost for a bag of 130 servings - Ducia eats about 4.5 - 5 oz a day do it'll last for a while.

In her blog Dr. Pierson talks about various kind of grinders. They are high capacity because of her large household and because she grinds meat with bones. Since we are looking to reduce P we do not need bones. I ended up buying very cheap made in Ukraine electric grinder on Ebay. Very cheap but I cannot remember how much $ - DH does Ebay and such. Works just fine. I doubt he'd pay more than $40 - 50 including shipping.

Other savings comes also with portions - Ducia currently eats just less than 2 cans x $2.00 ea :)blackeye::banghead:) = 5.2 roughly oz. Same used to be with Bubba, Bobbie's cat but once she posted that since the transition to raw only he eats about 4 oz a day. (though Bubba is hunter and chances are he snacks on wild game during the day). Is that so Bobbie, or I am I mistaken in portion size? @Bobbie And Bubba
Sorry so many questions.
Don't. Very glad to be of help. Cat food industry is out of control and I cannot think of any better than home made.

ETA: totally agree with Mandy re: food source.

Are you feeding raw, Mandy?
I was... is... depending on which cat you are talking about. ;)
Rex is getting raw when I have some. I ran out of the EZC a while ago. I saw a special on Darwin's raw food, but I won't buy that again. It has bones in it and Tanner and Precious don't like the pieces. Keena was and is still a challenge. I need to buy more mix once I'm done with Darwin's. Precious is getting a mix of both raw and Friskies. Tanner was on a mix, but I think he's struggling with panc flares nowadays so I have him back on all Friskies.

Girlie only likes pate as well, which makes life challenging. I hope either the raw or the phosphate binder will work for you. I didn't realise Maggie had CKD: how is she going? How are you?

Lovely message there in your post to Michelle. It's just tragic about Beenie...
Hey, I'm good! Saw you've been a little under the weather. Hope you are doing better. :bighug:

Maggie was diagnosed with stage 2 CKD in June 2016. Added some B12 and potassa-chew, and Royal Canin canned and dry food (oh, the horror!), and she was feeling pretty good. Now that her FD is under control, it's time to focus on the CKD again.

I just have no words for how awful I feel for Michelle. I sat here and sobbed for her and Beenie yesterday. You said some beautiful things to Michelle. I hope she can take some comfort and strength from everyone here who love her and Beenie.
