HI. so glad I found this forum. My sweet Dolly is 9 years old and I found out this week she is diabetic. Took her to the vet because her breath was very stinky. She has a bad mouth and needs two teeth removed. While examining her the vet said her heartbeat was not normal and her thyroid was "flabby" and did blood work. She is on glipizide 5mg, 1/2 tablet twice a day. She is also taking an antibiotic for her mouth.
Her vet recommended Purina DM canned, which I thought was expensive, she also said Fancy Feast Classic is also okay. I am using the Fancy Feast. Both cats, she has a brother, get wet food twice a day and dry food, free fed. I know the dry can be high in carbs and bought a bag of grain free, I also am slowly cutting back on the amount I put in the bowl. I now measure it.
Her vet did not mention anything about home testing.
I hope the food choices I have made due her no further harm.

Even grain-free dry food can be high in carbs. What specific grain-free dry are you still using? It is preferred to only feed low-carb canned food. The Classic varieties of Fancy Feast are low-carb.
Oral meds like glipizide seldom work on cats. If a low-carb canned does not work then insulin are required.

I was surprised that Dolly was not put on insulin. The dry is Good Natured from Petsmart.
 
Welcome! While I’m not familiar with Good Natured dry food, as Larry said grain free doesn’t mean low carb. If the food has things like peas, potatoes or tapioca, it’s to high in carbs for a diabetic kitty. The only low carb dry foods I’m aware of are Young Again Zero, Evo and Dr Elsys.
 
Welcome! You've come to the right place. Do you plan on having teeth pulled? What was the bg when it was tested at the vet? Skip the dry. (Unless you get young again zero carb food). You can leave out extra fancy feast... Some use a timed feeder or freeze a portion.
 
Her vet found two loose teeth and gum inflammation, she was treated with antibiotics and seems much more comfortable. I have to call the vet to ask about removing the loose ones. She and her brother love the Fancy Feast and she is so good about taking her pill. I like the idea about the timed feeder.

The initial blood work showed a bg of 346. Her vet then tested Dolly's Fructosamine level and said it was not as high as she thought it would be.

I have noticed less output in her litter box and her fur looks better, it was kind of flat and dull looking. Plus she is tolerating the puppy, 13 week old Chihuahua, more than she used to.

I am seeing that I can manage her diabetes and it's not as bad as I thought it would be.
