Didn't hear Beenie cough yet today so that's a plus. I didn't set an alarm overnight and it really makes a difference on how I feel the next day.....well rested with consecutive hours asleep:rolleyes:. Civvie Ming is having poop issues (constipated) and crying:(. If its not one cat its the other:arghh:

Ok here's the video I took yesterday of Beenie coughing.... has anyone had similar sounding coughs? @Doodles & Karen , @Wendy&Neko

I'll show the IM vet when we're seen but I thought if anyone had any input/comments its always welcomed and appreciated.
 
That's alarming and glad you got the video. Coughing can cause lung damage....how often is she doing that? Doodles cough was a bit different and I'm certainly not an expert. Doodles couldn't take pred or use the inhalers because his heart was too weak. They ended up giving me hydrocodone for him which is used as a cough suppressant. I'd email the video to the IM vet today as she looks pretty uncomfortable to me. Sending vines and prayers.

She doesn't do it all time. Haven't heard her cough once today. It seems to come and go. Yesterday it hung around quite a bit but nothing so far today. I'll call the vet and see if I can send them the video link and get their advice. Maybe it'll be the push to get her in sooner. Thanks Karen
 
Hmm, that doesn't look at all like Darwin's cough when he has an asthma flare up, but there are so many different types of coughs and ECID. I would agree with emailing the video if you can - it might help them get an idea before seeing Beenie. We always appreciate that where I work! Glad she doesn't do it all the time. Did they take an x-ray of her chest at your regular vet?

I just sent the IM vet the email. I included everything I planned an bringing hard copies of. I would think this would be all helpful in a diagnosis. The receptionist that I spoke with did say their email was down but she expected it back up later this afternoon so I don't expect a response until later today or even tomorrow. I included the MSU test resluts, a link to her SS..

If she were still coughing I probably would be a mess right now. The good thing is it does come and go and its not constant. It wasn't until around PMPS last night that she seemed better. Prior if I tried to engage her she would start to purr and that would get that coughing going so I had to leave her alone.

That's good! It's hard with cats because they are VERY good, as I'm sure you know, at hiding things. At least the cough isn't all the time, and making her feel lousy or anything. I'm sure the IM vet will have some answers, and hoping for GOOD news!! :cat::bighug:
 
That is what Libby sounded like when she had her attack this summer before we had her diagnosed. And the position of the body and head was the same. She would cough 5-10 times then settle. Sometimes seemed worse then others. And she would go hours with nothing.

Beenie has been seen by our regular vet several times and was given Orbax (AB) twice. Chest xrays were not abnormal. We're scheduled to see an IM on 10/31.

Oh poor Beenie, that cough sounds so sad! I hope the vet can squeeze her in soon. It breaks my heart that if you make her purr it sends her into a coughing frenzy. :( You got this, Beenie, get well soon! And Ming too? Have you ever tried pumpkin? I've never dealt with serious constipation, but if mine are having trouble, a little pumpkin seems to do the trick.

It is awful that I have to refrain from making her purr. I can't believe I posted the you tube link and it never occurred to me to search what a cat sounds like having an asthma attack and that is exactly what it looks and sounds like! Now I'm wondering why its so hard for vets to diagnose. Maybe without a video of your cat having attack it might be difficult so hopefully I can get Beenie on meds asap.

Ming liked pumpkin for two meals then turned his nose to it. I give him Miralax as it goes undetected. I just ordered Aloe Vera Juice (AVJ) and will add that as it helps many here with constipation and other things. Its supposed to taste just like water. He hasn't passed it yet so I'll give him until tomorrow otherwise I may take him in to get some "help".

The video is going go be key for Beenie. Unless they are in a flare, the x-rays don't usually show the little "doughnut like" circles in the lungs/airways which makes it hard to dx.

Oh ok. Not going to believe this my civvie Ming just got a steroid injection yesterday for suspect Asthma and 10 minutes ago my newest civvie, Buddy started with the same cough. Short lived but could all my cats be asthmatic?? I'll video them all when it happens. We are not smokers. I rarely light scented candles. I'm having the rugs upstairs replaced with laminate in the next few weeks. Maybe that will help. So weird
 
Sounds like Girlie's asthma cough. I have a video (several I think). I have to run out but will post them when I get back. Have you searched for "cat asthma cough" on YouTube? There are lots of other videos there. There's a great site called "Fritz the Brave" that has lots of info on asthma. Scary to hear, but Girlie has been well-controlled since 2013. I hope you find out soon what it was! Videos are great for the vets... Hugs! :bighug:

That is very unusual, I would suspect environmental allergens as well. All the beans okay? Anything stand out as new or different when all of this started? New litter or anything? HEPA air purifiers might help, my daughter has bad allergies and we have one in every room because of that, not a miracle cure, but it does make a big difference.
 
Hi Amethyst started out like Beenie and was Diagnosed with Asthma 2 years ago She is on a FLOVENT inhaler twice a day With Albuterol as a Rescue inhaler I hope Beenie is Okay It is really scary when they have attacks. What type of cat litter do you use? I change ours to total dust free Corn!:bighug:
 
I've been out all day and just saw this. Sounds very similar to Maggie's asthma. Hers starts like that, then she stretches her neck out, keeping it low, and alternately turns her head slightly left and right with each cough. She sounds snotty and congested. Usually makes obvious swallows like clearing mucus or snot. Breaths will be short and shallow for a while after that. Hope Beenie and crew feel better soon. :bighug:

Before finishing the entire thread I was wondering if you recently got new flooring but you addressed that. What about furniture or bedding? Using a new laundry detergent? Cleaner? Dust spray?

I hope everyone will be ok. How scary :eek:. I would have freaked and probably been at the ER with Gizmo.

Nothing I can think of. Beenie's had this since August when I started noticing some changes in breathing/cough. Had vet check her out a few times. Once I get her to IM and get an official diagnosis I will certainly look into getting a filter. Thanks for the idea!

Getting her to a specialist next week. I use Worlds Best Cat Litter which is corn based. Hope that's ok for kitties with asthma.

Thanks Alicia! So strange that Ming was doing it again and brought him in yesterday and he got a steroid injection. Last time was June for him. Buddy coughed this afternoon same as you describe with the neck out low moving side to side but it lasted seconds. I saw him do it once when he was outdoors and not my furbaby and once about two weeks ago but that was it.

No new furniture or bedding. Cleaning products and laundy detergents are the same too.

I did rush her to the vet on a Saturday for this and that was the first round of Orbax we got. I didn't panic too much this time because I know it stops but it keeps happening and the occurrences are getting closer together. Boy by the time I get to the IM my signature is going to have a laundry list of aliments for poor Beenie. If you see it now I noted "no other health issues"....what has happened in the past 5 months is making my head spin:confused:

Is Fritz a high dose kitty because of the steroids causing insulin resistance? I see he tested neg for IAA and Acro, thank goodness

Not new litter. We've been using Worlds Best for quite some time. Its corn based, no clay.

:bighug:Oh not this Saturday. It was several weeks ago. Just in a round about way agreeing if it was the first time hearing Beenie cough like that I would run her to the vet asap. The first time it was bad like that was on a Saturday and I called my vet and he took us in even though he was closing.
We'll get to the bottom of it.

I emailed my regular vet today with the same video. He felt I could wait to see the IM vet. He said normally he would prescribe steroids but with diabetes and everything else he feels the IM should weigh the options.

World's Best is ...well....the best, but it is awfully dusty. I had to switch to SmartCat and got air filters for the rooms and Sam hasn't had an attack in months now. Also, changing the carpet for hard flooring and vacuuming way more than I want to. :rolleyes: Pretty much the same things you do for a human with asthma or allergies. It was that or steroids. :eek: Thankfully his was mild enough that the environmental changes were enough.

That head position is typical for asthma, I understand.

Most litters label that they are 99% dust free which is a load of crap. Worlds Best says the same but I agree it can be dusty. I will look up SmartCat litter. Looks like air filters will be in out future too.

I avoid perfume, air fresheners, scented candles: anything with scent.

The litter is important, in my experience. Be careful with some of the corn-based ones: it can stick to paws and they can ingest it; some cats try to eat it.

I use OzPet cat litter: http://www.oz-pet.net.au/
Great litter and keeps the wet litter off their paws; no smell, no tracking.

Also use Natty Cat, also pellets, but Lucerne rather than wood. They're softer on paws.

Girlie would rather I use clumping litter, but the dust and stuff that clings to her paws make it a no go for us.
