Look at me! Didn't test Darwin this morning - I let him have a break. :nailbiting::nailbiting:

I'm planning Darwin's dental in the next two weeks, and I'm nervous about it setting him back at all. It seems the consensus is that dental issues can push them out of remission, so I am guessing there's much more harm in NOT getting it done than getting it done.

Also, I want to try to start switching Darwin over to a raw diet - as long as I stick to LC, there's no reason I shouldn't try it out, right?

I think I'm just going to continue to be paranoid about setting him back. I know it CAN happen anyway, but I want to do all I can to ensure it doesn't happen.

Also, if you could all send healing vines out to the rest of our four-legged household. We have one senior dog that has cancer, and is not eating well, and now I have to take my girl (Arya from Darwin's OTJ video) to the eye specialist again to possibly have another eye surgery :arghh::blackeye: If it's not one thing...

Head bumps to all!!

I didn't test Rex yesterday nor today!! But then again, I cannot get down on the floor like I usually do due to an injury incurred Sunday.

Good luck switching to raw. Do it slowly. Some cats transition quickly - like Rex and Precious did. Tanner has his days. Keena is not on raw at all. Are you looking at already made raw food or are you looking at making your own?

I hope your other pets are okay!! :bighug:

Ooh, hope YOU are okay! That doesn't sound good! :bighug:

I'll probably just start adding a bit to his FF and see what he does - he is reluctant to eat if I even add a little MC gravy to his FF pate, so it will be a SLOW transition  I am thinking of trying RadCat actually. It seems to be popular, and is quite affordable at our local Pet Food Depot. My dog has been on raw since she was a puppy, so it would be great to have them both on raw - I prep all of her meals, but she's much more expensive as she's 70lbs! Ha!

I hope your other pets are okay!! :bighug:
Thank you! Osa (our senior shepherd) is hanging in there. For as bad as her x-rays looked last week, she is doing quite well besides the lack of appetite. Arya isn't feeling sick, thankfully, but her eyes are sure expensive, haha!

My two cents: I would have the same anxiety about the dental treatment and setback, that being said, oral disease can become systemic (in people too) and I think it's far wiser to take care of that for Darwin's future, diabetes and otherwise. Asia almost died because of some teeth issues that caused infection and other major whole body symptoms. I had no idea! She only has 2 of her back teeth left, and I'm kicking myself that I didn't have those extracted when the other ones were. She is now too old to have a procedure like that, way too risky, and at the time, those 2 teeth were unaffected and I think I had to pay something like $300-$440 PER tooth extracted, so it wasn't exactly affordable. Lessons learned.

So sorry to hear about your dog and Arya (Stark?), I hope they get sorted and give you a little break on the animal medicine front. :bighug:

Good luck trying raw, maybe he will just like it, Asia is super picky and she surprised me.

Thanks!!! I feel the same way! I am sort of the "dental girl" at work - I'm a HUGE advocate for their oral health, and how it effects so many other body systems. Wasn't surprised to see dental problems bring cats out of FD remission. I'm just so nervous that it would cause a problem with his new remission, but I can't imagine why, and the vet doesn't seem to think it would interfere, so hopefully not! A couple of things on his labwork are mildly elevated that CAN be elevated with dental issues, so I think it's time! :D

ETA: Yep, that's Arya Stark! :D:D

Hopefully his overachiever OTJ numbers will give you some confidence to proceed with dental work. ;)

Great cat names! :cat: So what do you call the dog?

You may see some higher numbers after a dental if there is some inflammation, pain or if he got an infection. But if the dental goes smoothly and there's no adverse complications it shouldn't knock him out of remission.

NB make sure any meds are sugar free.

Monitor his BG after the procedure daily for a while to make sure it doesn't escalate should he have an issue with rising BG.

Thanks! I don’t really have any questions about the dental itself (I’m a vet tech, so I’ll be doing his dental myself), but more in dealing with him being a diabetic newly in remission. I’m so worried about doing anything that might set him back.

Okay, that makes sense and is good to keep in mind so I don’t panic if he gets a bit elevated. Really hoping he won’t have any extractions!

I can have something compounded if needed. He is very difficult to medicate orally, so he’s had to have Convenia before, but I do think I’ve read about some issues with Convenia in kitties on here...
