Well the itching is still with him and no worse but no better. I guess it could be a food allergy of some sort. It could be a soothing thing (behavior). Hoping it doesn't indicate something worse. Good appy, good attitude. No hair loss or pulling it out. He has always had this behavior to a certain extent. It is like if he has a hair out of place it "bothers" him and he has to stop and lick it. Primarily on his sides and above his tail but also he is now scratching his neck/chin area with his back paws (and ears/head area). IDK. It isn't obsessive and it isn't like he does it constantly but much more lately.

Is anyone using Newmans Own or Daves? I got a case of each to try - I may mix up a batch and see if he likes it this weekend. Both are Turkey (Daves is Turkey & Giblets - he loves the FF T&G). He is currently getting all chicken. My hesitation is it would be another change with the dosing changes I have done and not sure if that is a smart thing to do. :rolleyes:

I used Dave's a lot with Harvey and Cinco. They liked it pretty well, and it's LC.

I hope the itching clears up. You may need to try a novel protein to see if it's a food allergy.

I thought that maybe it was the Adequan because it started around the same time (and increased in ?severity?). Problem is finding something with low phos because of his ckd. Other than going raw - any suggestions?

Anyone ever tried quail? I have a contact that raises them for food. It would be a long haul to go and get it but I might consider using it raw with FFL.
 
I hope you can figure out what is causing the itching and it clears up soon. I hope Gizmo gives you a blue/green surf today. Sending prayers.
 
I didn't know Gizmo had the itchies. Do cats suffer from seasonal allergies like people??:bookworm: My civvie Buddy gets the itches but its not constant and I told my vet I noticed happening more this spring and then didn't notice it again until very end of summer beginning of fall.

Yes, they can. I have seen his numbers go up when my allergies are flaring up. Usually Sping and Fall.

This has been going (increased) on since August. He will sometimes lick his side until it is wet. Very wet. His coat and eyes are beautiful. Coat is soft, shiny. And it isn't all the time.

I have seen that people are trying Zertec for appy enhancer. I wonder if it also works for allergies and if it would be worth a try.

He saw greens last high (50 :eek:). He is now bouncing a bit from that I think.

Here is a video of his itching behavior. He did this for about 10 min. No scratching with his hind paw but he does that too.

 
Hope ur day is productive , Lizzie :). Will be watching ur posts on itching and others responses with interest . Astros game was awesome last night ! Tell DH we are pulling for a game 7 win tonight !!!!:)
 
I must say Gizmo looks like he's doing what I would deem a standard grooming session. He wasn't obsessively licking the same spot over and over again. He moved around to different areas. He does have long luxurious locks so grooming takes a little longer.:p But if this is out of the ordinary from his regular grooming technique than maybe an allergy pill is worth a shot??
 
My civvie Baby is affected by the pollen in Fall and Spring. It makes her sneeze and her eyes water. I give her 1/4 of a tablet of Zyrtec and it helps. You can give it every 12 hour if needed. It might help with the itching.

Is it normal to make their fur completely wet? He will get what I call obsessed with one side (or the other) and end up wet - like he laid in the sink - wet. This behavior is new(er), more in recent months. I wonder if he is just feeling that much better and is grooming more. IDK I will try and get another video.

I might try that. Zyrtec is $$ - I wonder if they have generic. I will look when I run out today.
 
I'm with Michelle, it seems very much a good (normal) grooming session to me. I have seen both Maverick and my civvie, Jester grooming each other and giving those little "bites" followed by the licking ;). As for the extra wetness, Gizmo is long-haired, I remember my long-haired Calico girl's fur used to be almost slicked-back looking during grooming, and felt wet...there was so much extra saliva, she was really working hard to do something to flatten down her poofy fur lol:rolleyes:

My Ducia often grooms to the extent that her groomed site is wet to the touch. More so even in the hot dry weather days. It usually dries up in a little while.
The video looks totally normal grooming session to me. I hope Gizmo is all right. Just keep observing.

Hi Lizzie! I too think it looks like a great grooming session. Glad he's not pulling out hair.

I will tell you this, Bubba started itching under his chin since he's been diabetic. He does it right before his AM and his PM shots. It is something I noticed for about the last 1 1/2 years he was diabetic. I remember reading something that Marje posted a while ago that some cats get itchy on insulin. The funny thing is that he was itching under his chin before his AM and PM meal while on remission. Go figure!??
 
Happy Caturday!! :cat: It also seems like normal grooming to me! I'd say you should be more worried if the hair starts looking thin. Most kitties we see in my clinic with seasonal (or other) allergies are grooming to the point of hair loss, and often have scabs and sores on their body. Hope it's just that he is feeling well, and enjoying his grooming again!!

Interesting. Thanks. And yes, his chin always itches. When I brush him he will rub/push his chin on the brush so hard I worry about hurting him. Did Marje suggest zyrtec or anything?

None of that, in fact, since his numbers have been better he isn't losing clumps (when he sctatches with his back paw) or shedding as bad.
