Hello,
I hope you and your fur babies have all been well!

I need help for Theodore's blood sugar/insulin please.

Teddy has not needed insulin for his diabetes since about May of this year. The change in his food made his numbers stay within normal range is what I think.
(He has been really unwell with nerve pain and loss of the use of one front leg) However his diabetes has been stable.

Well, within this week he changed to Perscription Hills K/D canned food because my vet said his kidney numbers are at the highest before kidney problems.
I always check his blood sugar randomly ever since May.... the last two days he peed outside his litter box...something he has never done except when he had diabetes before he was diagnosed.

Well I check and his blood sugar was 384 on the human meter. (It's possible he had eaten some of his food at any point in the hours prior to me testing him) - but I decided to give him 1 unit of insulin, since I'll be home with him....and he ate (back to his old low carb food) and an hour later now his blood sugar is 468.

Why is it going up?? I've never seen a number that high! I thought since I gave insulin it should be going down??
Should I give him more insulin? What if it goes up higher?

I don't know what to do??

It may take a bit to work out that high carb KD food. You would be better off getting a low carb, low phosphorus food.

I was giving him fancy feast (the low carb ones) and pro plan canned and his numbers were always around 100.
But since the vet said his kidney numbers keep going up and he is at 36 I think she said, she said he is at the top number before kidney problems/failure....so she said to give him the k/d to prevent that.
So now I don't know what to do!

Don't give more insulin. Wait for the 12 hour. It went up because he ate and insulin takes at least two hours to kick in usually. Sorry it looks like he's out of remission and in the same boat as me.


Perscription kidney food is not necessary unless he's in stage 4 kidney failure. If it's just slightly elevated find allow carb lower phosphorus food such as weruva bff cans.

If you can post the labs we can give you more advice on that.

Ok do you think eating the k/d food for the past four days put him out of remission?
Oh wow ok the vet said I could prevent or prolong kidney failure by giving him this food. So now I've caused more problems for Teddy. So upsetting. She said his kidney number is just at the top number before kidney failure - which I believe she said his number was 36. She said it's gone up each year. I just had the lab work done. That's why the switch in food.

That's the bun number. What is his creatinine number? The best thing you can do is keep the phosphorus low and lost of extra water to flush the kidneys. The kd food is low in protien which at early stages can lead to muscle wasting.
 
I noticed when Jones was on dry at ER vet - it took a while to get his BG's back under control - plus he wasn't given insulin.
That high carb stuff seems to stick around for a bit...

Can you post your lab results? Or are they already updated in your spreadsheet? We have some people here that are really good at reading those.
 
Another low protein/low phos food is Primal Turkey. It comes in freeze dried or frozen versions, but the recipe is the same in both versions. It also has a good Calcium to Phosphorus ratio which is important.

I'm so sorry to see that Teddy's numbers are higher again. Janet is right though - that wasn't enough time for the insulin to start working yet. The increase in BG is a food spike which is totally normal. Wait the 12 hours and then see where he's at and give him another dose if he needs it. In between now and then, take deep breaths and give him some love. And hugs to you. :bighug:
 
Aw Shawna, I'm sorry to hear that Teddy hit a bump in the road! First off, don't blame yourself. How could you have known? You were trying to do the right thing with this new kidney information. Look into the food suggested and see if any of them will work...and let's see what happens. He got controlled by food before, he probably can again. :bighug::bighug:

Thank you so much. Yes I wasn't thinking about the food spike because to see a number in the 400s really shocked me! This morning after 12 hours no food and the 1 unit of insulin yesterday - now he is at 266. I gave him 1 unit and his other low carb fancy feast until I figure out the food situation. I'll be home all day with him to make sure he's ok. Does all low carb food have good phosphorus? I don't know anything about Phosphorus...I'll do some reading today about it.

For the last few months he was eating fancy feast and pro plan and his numbers have stayed 80-107 about on the relion.

So I won't give the k/d anymore.

I don't know what his creatinine number is but I'll ask my vet.

I updated his spreadsheet, but I only know the one number of 36 for his kidney. But I can get the rest of the information from my vet to post.

Just call the receptionist and ask her to email your labs.

Fancy feast tends to be a little higher in phosphorus. If he doesn't have a phosphorous issue it's OK (it will say in the labs). If his phosphorus is too high you could switch to a lower phosphorus food or add a phosphorous binder to the fancy feast.

The creatnine number is the one I'm more concerned with because that will tell you if the kidneys are declining. Don't let it scare you. With treatment ckd cats can live for years.
