Hey everyone!

Leo started Lantus today after being on Vetsulin for over a year. I had been using u100 needles with my u40 Vetsulin following the "u40 to u100" conversion chart. The needles I used were 1/2mL.

Today, the vet supplied me with more u100 needles to go with the Lantus and I just noticed they are different. The vet told me to give "1 Unit" using the needles they gave me, so I assumed she meant at the first line.

However, the new u100 needles are smaller and read 3/10mL. Needless to say, I'm a little confused now since the needles are smaller in size, and the dose is now smaller (1.5 to 1.)

Can anyone help me get this straightened out?

The 3/10ml syringes are just smaller than the 1/2ml

The only difference is in the total amount they hold....a 1/2ml syringe will hold up to 50 units....a 3/10ml will only hold up to 30 units

A unit is a unit on the syringes, so as long as you're used to using U100's, just use the 1U line as you always have

You should be using 3/10ml syringes with Lantus ....that's what most of us use (unless you have a cat on a huge dose....like over 30 units)

I guess I'm just confused because it seems like I was giving him so much more Vetsulin, like near the 4U mark on the u100. And now it's down to 1U. Is it because Lantus is stronger?

When did you switch to Lantus?

Your spreadsheet isn't up to date so that makes it a lot harder for us to give you much advice

Generally though, if he was on 4U of Vetsulin, he should have probably been started at more than 1U of Lantus.....when switching from one insulin to another, we take into consideration the dose they were on before.

Lantus is a longer acting, gentler insulin, not necessarily "stronger"....it works in a totally different way than Vetsulin so you really can't compare them like that

Hmm yeah, the vet understood that he was on u40 Vetsulin (I think) and that he was getting 1.5 U, but still told me to start him out at 1U on the Lantus.

I switched to Lantus today after a visit to the vet.

Oh and not 4U of Vetsulin, 1.5 of Vetsulin which from the conversion chart would be 3.8 on a u100 needle if I'm correct?

Oh OK....that makes a difference

It will be important for you to update your spreadsheet though and put a line in for when you started Lantus....Lantus dosing is based on how LOW it takes them, where Vetsulin is more dependent on the Pre-shot and how low they go.

Yes, 3.8 is right

Well after some research I can answer my own question. The reason it seems like I was giving more Vetsulin is because I was. Now to delete this thread...

I'm glad you figured it out.

You don't need to delete the thread, you'd be surprised how many folk might find the info useful.
