I'm glad you found this site... I think you'll find a lot of helpful information and caring people.Just found out Stinky has feline diabetes, appointment tomorrow to learn what the future holds for us. Stinky is a 12 yr. old female Tortie.
So sorry about the diagnosis. We are here for you. How bad is this wound that he feels an amputation is needed? Does he feel it's cancerous?Thank you very much! Here's her history: She has a wound on her foot that will not heal, this is the 2nd time this year (and 3rd time total) the wound has appeared. I have been taking her to the vet for that issue and the vet suggested that we do blood work since the wound appears on the same paw each time. In fact the vet recommends amputation of her right leg and the blood work is a prerequisite. I had accepted the fact that we would have a 3-legged cat and was prepared to go forth with the surgery. Had the blood work done last Wed. & got the results on Friday. The blood work showed her glucose level was 418 and her urine glucose was 3. The vet said 64-170 is the normal range for blood glucose and should be zero in the urine. She of course is stressed by the wound, 2x a day cleaning/soakings, the cone of shame etc. The vet said that stress would not have made the glucose rise to that level. We have an appointment tomorrow to get the diabetes intro from the vet, so this is all very, very new to us.
The wound is bad, and yes the Vet thinks it could be cancerous, but we haven't done a biopsy. Because of the high glucose/diabetes diagnosis, the vet want to get that under control before any surgery. I had the thought that perhaps the wound is not healing because she has diabetes. The wound is not a bite from any other animal, insect or snake. It started out like a small pimple and just gets bigger. She's had antibiotic shots during all instances of the wound appearing. So sorry about the diagnosis. We are here for you. How bad is this wound that he feels an amputation is needed?
