Hello

Frank was diagnosed around 6 weeks ago. The last week I’ve just got to grips with his blood testing at home. His numbers always seem to stick around 26-28 just before insulin. Is this normal or should it be coming down by now? We’ve changed to a low carb food this week, we struggled till now to get something he would eat outwith his normal high carb dry so I’m hoping it starts to come down soon.

Welcome Lisa and Frank.

How wonderful that you have already started home testing. That is one of the most important things you can do to keep your kitty safe and start to understand how insulin works. As well changing to a wet low carb food is another great step. Glucose numbers go up and down each day even with a non-diabetic kitty.

For more detailed information please post on the Health forum where there are more "eyes".

No 2 cats are ever the same, just for now forget about a textbook cat although it is quite do-able. Good to see you're testing. Just for clarity this site mostly runs on the Imperial system with regards to meter numbers (multiply by 18) and weight. Insulin units are the same everywhere. Frank is a great name, we adopted a street cat that looked like Frank Zappa's moustache so that was his name.

Hi Lisa & Frank!

My Loki (okay, really I'm probably her "Chris") was diagnosed about 8 weeks ago and I also just recently came to grips with home testing. As I'm new to this game as well, I'll defer to the experts but 26-28 (I'm assuming this is listed in mmol/L as opposed to the US measurement of mg/dl) is high. As everyone here will tell you every cat is different (ECID) and some do have higher numbers like the readings your getting. When Loki was first diagnosed she registered as about 19.33mmol/L at the vet and in a follow up visit was registering 24.33mmol/L. When I first started testing Loki at home her numbers could get even higher (my spreadsheet tells the tale, check out the link in my signature). In Loki's case, I believe that high numbers had a lot to do with the fact that I was stressed out self testing in the beginning and she reacted to that tension. Since then, she's learned the drill, as have I, and her numbers don't jump that high any more.

So... long story short: the numbers maybe true numbers, but they may also be a bit flaky as you and Frank develop a home testing routine. More home testing will help provide you a clear number. As I alluded to above, I use a tracking spreadsheet, which was developed by some fine people here on the boards! You can find information about the spreadsheet as well as a link to the templates here: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/

Wait... That wasn't very encouraging. We had a textbook cat, everything ran like a Swiss watch. Maybe I need a nap. Anyways, it's nice to have you here. You wouldn't be here unless you cared. Oh brother, I'm going now.

Thanks for all your replies. I think I just thought it was a simple case of 2 jags a day and he would be normal. Quickly learning it’s a lot more complex than that.

Haha they do that. He had bad diahrrea to start with too, you’ve no idea how many times I had my head in the litter tray hoping for a solid movement
oi, that is never fun! :arghh: Has Franks tummy settled down at all?

There were a few times my wife and I needed to help Loki clean herself... those were NOT a pleasant evenings for any of us!

He’s settled well, he had around 3 weeks of it. I think it was maybe just getting him getting used to insulin. He had many a shower in that time. He still wanted to cuddle in, had no idea what this wetness was on me as it didn’t smell, soon realised his tail was sodden with poo, I was covered

Great to hear! (Well, all except being covered in poo, that is not fun!)

Loki's were never "unscented" it was pretty evident immediately. It's a darn good thing I love that little stinker so much!;)

I'd like to think they do, at least to some extent. Her appreciation of what I do might be the ONLY reason Loki likes me (she hates everyone else on the planet).
