hey guys, Frank was diagnosed 6 weeks ago, for 3 weeks he was on 2 units of caninsulin twice a day. The vet wasn’t happy so increased to 3 units twice a day. We wern’t home testing at first, vet seems against it as he realised he wouldn’t be making money from the weekly appts. I’ve Home tested the last couple of weeks and the results are going like this (pretty similar numbers at each stage in testing)

26.3 before insulin
17.0 3 hours after
13.6 4 hours after
20.2 11 hours after
26.3. 12 hours after

Due to working hours I’ve been unable to get any 6 hour tests myself but at the vets he’s ranged from 18-25. We usually get taken late so not sure if that stresses frank and effects the reading or not. He isn’t dropping low enough for his pancreas to recover so I’m told. At what level does he need to get for it to recover?

What are you feeding? Just FYI, not a good idea to increase in whole units. You could skip the ideal dose. Sometimes too much insulin can look like not enough. Under 150 us numbers.... So that's around 8 world numbers.... Is when the pancreas can rest and hopefully heal. BUT you've gotta get there gradually. You are already dropping 50%.... Any more and you'll have a lot of bouncing. I think you may be bouncing now since you don't know how low is going. Can you get a +5-6 over the weekend?

Hi Janet, we will get a 6 hour at the event today and will do a 5 at the weekend. I’ve givej my husband a list with all the readings and asked him to ask the vet about the bounce. We’re feeding a mixture of wet 2.5% carb and dry 15% carb. Trying to get to all wet eventually but it’s proven difficult so in the meantime switched to a much lower carb dry until we can really tackle wet only.

Hi Janet,

His 6 hour reading was 8. The vet seemed really happy with his progress and said the food change has been a really positive factor and we should hopefully see numbers before insulin drop now he's on a lower carb diet. We have to now do a urine test for ketones at home, no idea how we do that, sounds like we're going to get dirty hands haha

Haha! Some use a long handled ladel

8 is good!

I’m leaving this part to my husband. I did the hard part trying to investigate the diet, the curve, the ear pricking. It’s his turn for the mucky stuff

Glad 8 is good. I was worried I was celebrating too soon. Hoping the numbers before insulin drop next

End goal eventually you'll want the numbers down a little lower, but not until the preshot Comes down. It can take time. :)
