Hemp oil for cats????

Hi all, I haven't been on for a while and I'm still trying to get old Sketch regulated. I have him up to 5 1/4 units of lantus twice a day and we are still struggling to get lower numbers. Being an indoor/outdoor cat he may be sourcing food somewhere else in the hood. I have tried following him to try to confirm if there is a source plus I have spoken with neighbors who have cats and they say they are not free feeding. Still I wonder as his # will spike as can be seen on his sheet.
So I am wondering as I have read some reports that hemp oil can be beneficial in helping to regulate blood glucose....do any of you have experience with this? Is it at all toxic or will it interfere or interact with insulin?
Additionally how many of you give sub q fluids and how often do you administer them?

I'm not that well versed in lantus but that sounds like a heck of a lot of insulin! He seemed to do well on a lower dose and I see he hit yellows and blues, then when his dose is raised he seems to go into higher number which makes me wonder if he's on too much. Too much insulin can look like too little.

I do see he was attacked by a dog poor wee man! That whole incident would definitely increase his bgs for some time. When you see artificially induced bgs for example being attacked by a dog or at the vets it's often the case that insulin is increased because we see those high numbers when in fact we should shoot through (keeping the same dose) until that crisis has passed.

Having said that I'd like to repeat I do not know a lot about depot insulins and am more familiar with in and out ones such as ProZinc so I'd rather you got some more knowledgeable people to chime in there. @Kris & Teasel @Yong

With regards to the hemp oil, I think you mean CBD oil (cannabis oil) which is extracted from hemp? Hemp oil is used for other purposes. I have heard reports of CBD being used to help with bg levels and stabilising them but I'd urge you to do some more in depth research before giving it, maybe you could join one of the online groups.
Please do be careful that any oil you buy is tested and you can see batch reports. It must be low in thc (which is the psychoactive ingredient so lower than 0.3 is ok) @Chris & China may be able to help with more info on it.

Thanks for your input!...I agree it seems that increasing the insulin dosage seems to only have a short term affect if any at all. When I look back at his spread sheet I have seen that he has had similar numbers when on a smaller dose. Typically what I have been doing is meeting with my vet every few weeks, reviewing the numbers as to what to do with dosage and have only increased it when she has reviewed the sheet, examined Sketch (often giving sub Q fluids during the visit) and made a determination based on the visit and info.
The dog incident I'm sure had some immediate impact on his BG (on mine too) but by now after his recovery I'm sure has passed. His BG the morning following the attack in the ER clinic was in the high 500's and the ER vet decided it would be best to give his normal dose at the time but advised me that if he wasn't eating well (which he didn't for a day and a half) to reduce it maybe by half as high numbers are better than crashing him and the pain medication may mask it as the pain meds made him sleep and not do much else.
I should note that we have had several labs run looking for possible secondary issues / infections that would create a semi intolerance to the lantus with nothing coming up. I have discussed my concern that possibly Sketch is insulin resistant as I hear some cats (esp Maine Coons) can be. I am also wondered about trying a different insulin and if that might provide a diff result?
Despite his bouncy high numbers he continues to carry on a fairly normal life. In the last two days he has come bouncing in the house with 2 birds and a rat.....which he doesn't eat but just gifts them to me. I keep telling him to leave the birds alone and if he has to kill something concentrate on the rats and mice.

My sister had a special needs cat that would disappear for many hours, then overnight because a neighbor thought poor kitty looked hungry. Never a good idea if you know the cat has a home, she should have checked the cats tear-away collar. Just a thought.

Yep I agree when his numbers spike high. I have covered much of his territory with him and talked to most the neighbors advising of his condition..that doesn't mean I couldn't have missed one he's keeping a secrete! About the only thing I can do now is get some of those glasses with the nose and mustache, a trench coat and try to follow him....what the hell the neighbors already think I'm crazy!

Sorry but what is BOT? Pre shot PM tests are pretty consistently between 425 and 500. I've noted when he has had higher # preshot. Being as Sketch is an outdoor / indoor cat he is not always available for testing throughout the day. Not sure if my ss is updating based on what you are saying as I have pretty much daily entries sometimes multiples per day depending on Sketchs availability. What is the last entry you see Larry? Last one I see was this morning. My vet has recommended when I increase dosage to wait a few days before testing.

I recently purchased a CBD pet tincture from Calyx Wellness and I have been giving it to Garth a few times a day when he is really meowing his head off for food. I'm not sure if it's working, but I'm giving it a shot. It is mostly just cod liver oil. Not sure how it will affect his BG, but hoping I will see a difference.
