Spicoli pt4

He is. Bupe every 8-12 hrs. But I think I know why now. The antibiotics seem to have given him a terrible upset tummy. We just had to have a bath :(

Ohhh no! I'm sorry to hear his tummy is upset. What AB is he on? Can the vet give anything different that might be better for his tummy?

We skipped our morning dose of antibiotics. Shouldn't have, but I need him to eat and his tummy to settle down. There wasn't any infection to start with - it's more of a preventative measure. The good news is he ate well today. Numbers still a little higher, but he seems to be settling down a bit. Clindamycin is "the go to" AB for oral infections so I doubt they'd want to switch to something else. Will be resuming after his dinner/insulin tonight.

Kind of surprised they prescribed Clindamycin as preventative. From my understanding, it's one of the "stronger" antibiotics :bookworm:. Have you tried giving him probiotics while taking the antibiotic? Just like people, it can help their tummy :cat:.

Wonder if they have enough cultures. I think I've seen this one mentioned: http://a.co/ixLwWx5 and @Squalliesmom might've been the one who mentioned it. I've tagged Lucy to verify. Sorry I always tag you for supplements, Lucy! :bighug::bighug::bighug:
Lol, no problem!
I have never used those particular probiotics, although I have used other Now brand products and liked them just fine. The probiotics I use are the Renew Life Ultimate Flora 15 Billion, which you can also find on Amazon. :):bighug:

I might try those. Do they also have that tastiness factor? He LOVES the way FortiFlora tastes and when he has some appetite loss it works well to get him to eat.

Just for the record, he takes FortiFlora daily for his IDB. I had stopped the S. boulardii when his BMs became normal but have resumed that since the diarrhea with antibiotics. I've read alot about how "pet" probiotics aren't as potent and I'm open to trying something new. Just want them to be appealing to him.

As far as I know they have little to no actual taste to them. I know my cats have never objected to them, at any rate! :) But I do not believe they have the tastiness factor that will help encourage eating, no.

Well, shoot. I was really hoping the dental was going to welcome in some better numbers. Hang in there!

We are :) I think the antibiotics might be at play here...his tummy is still giving him fits and he's obviously very uncomfortable at times. He had a good night the day after the dental, but has been so high since. Either way, we'll take it as it comes. I'm off work Wednesday, so I may increase tomorrow night and curve on Wed. And right after we earned a reduction!!! :banghead:

Like a dosing roller coaster!

How much longer does he have to be on the AB?
Till Saturday. I'm going to try and schedule a vet visit for Wednesday and see if we can't use something else. There are also a few other things to check on. He's still hoarse and last night I noticed him chewing on a spot where he had an IV catheter. He has a lump on both from legs from them.

Got the go ahead today to stop the AB- we hadn't given the last 2 doses anyways, and got something to help calm his tummy down along with the probiotics. Had his little legs checked, vet didn't seem to think much about them. Said they were most likely just from the IV catheters. Upped to 4.75u last night. He's moving a little today and it's curve day!!!

Well that was a nice green last night but I see Spicoli is back on the trampoline :cat:. Sorry you didn't get a response last night, I work second shift so by the time I get back on, most people are asleep in the states .

He is... I gave him a little higher carb food at +4 since I HAD to get some sleep, so it's a food/bounce thing.

And no worries :) I learned that 4u was too much for that PS value and handled it like I have in the past. His PS numbers have been dropping that past few cycles which is great, but things are so unpredictable right now.

We earned a reduction today!! The DH was put in charge of testing while I was at work. He successfully did his first 2 tests :)

+3.5 109 - was given WAY too much high carb food (I told him a tablespoon, he gave a 5oz can "because he gobbled it up and wanted more") so I expect Spicoli to be pretty high tonight.

Another bounce this AM but at least we're making progress!!
Last night
PMPS 254 - 3.75 since 4 was too much last time
by +4 (and after feeding again) 131 - gave a little high carb so that could be contributing but I had to go to bed.

Oh Spicoli boy, the blues are very nice numbers, no need to overreact and super jump on the trampoline :p:cat:. Wes, maybe try MC next time? I did little experiments with Maury and realized he didn't really need the HC when I had to leave or go to bed. Might work on Spicoli :). Obviously, only try it when you can check him again first :D.

This has nothing to do with the cat, but sorry if I tag you guys all over the place :) You guys have been such a big help to me and I know to many others. I just hated to see Bonnie and Oreo Joe weren't getting any feedback and I'm not really the one to give it lol. Maybe one day :)

Never hesitate to tag people! We're all one big community here. I was surprised when I read through the thread that no one had responded yet, so thank you for keeping an eye out, bumping, and tagging folks to respond. Then Chris and I ended up cross posting, but thankfully we both made the same suggestion. I almost never check out on Main, but I'm happy to help when I can!

Please feel free to tag us! I usually don't check Main due to time constraints so a tag is the only way I'll see a lot of those. Tag us anytime and we'll be happy to help! And you'll get there in time too. :)

I don't mind being tagged either, just feel bad that I can't immediately respond sometimes :(. I tagged you somewhere, Wes, to look at a newer member who had a kitty that looked like Spicoli's sibling! :cat: You've been very helpful too! I've seen you post some input :). I will still say "let's see what other's have to say" when giving some advice ;).

As for what constitutes HC and MC, I don't know if there's anything official but many on the board say LC is <9%. So I say MC is 10% - 14% and HC is >15%, roughly. Most of the FF gravy lovers are >15% so that's where that came from :D.

I saw that kitty :) They do look pretty similar. And thanks for the carb info!! I now have some medium and high, depending on what we need - but none are gravy since it upsets his tummy.

Many cats can also be steered with just their regular low carb food, unless they are actually down to 50. It keeps them safe and avoids the spike. It's just a matter of trying it and seeing if it works for your cat since...ECID! :)

Reduced this AM - 4.25u, pretty sure he dipped a little low last night 4.5u PMPS 385 +4 180. I didn't give and MC or HC but gave him his regular food instead.

+3 260

Gonna grab some more midcycle tests but that (to me) seems like a pretty steep drop.

What would you guys think about another reduction depending on how the rest of today goes? Looks like that dental is paying off!! :)

Hmm :bookworm:. I'm thinking *as of right now* hold the 4.5U. He bounced this morning because by +4 that was more than a 50% drop. I don't think he went dangerously low overnight but the 4.25U was safe today in case he's insulin sensitive. If he gives you another PS <299, then another reduction might be in order :cat:. Let's see what the others think :D.
*Just my opinion, not professional advice* ;)

Usually you just reduce if you get a number under 50, so I would suggest holding the dose unless you have a low PS and won't be around to monitor. If you'll be around though, I'd let him get as close to 50 as he wants to so he can start getting used to those numbers again. The lower nadirs are needed to start to bring those PS's down. You need to keep him safe, so be cautious if you won't be home, but as long as you're there, his pancreas and liver need those lower numbers to wake back up.

We use a pet meter so that number will be a little higher, right? <68 is considered hypo correct?
I'll be at work the next 2 days, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to come check or not. But the DH will be testing Sat. while I'm gone :) Hopefully he can follow directions this time.

+11 82 (76 then retested because I didn't think it was right.)

What in the world. I was at work all day, but DH said he seemed perfectly fine and just wanted outside all day. I'm just worried he hypo'd and it wasn't caught.

Whoa, Spicoli! When I said 50 the other day, I was wrong! You're not supposed to be listening to me! ;)

Looks like he really does want a reduction! Have you stalled at all yet? I agree that those 20 minutes of waiting are the worst.

I don't expect that he'll be high enough to shoot the full dose, but I'm curious if he'll have started to rise yet. Then the question becomes, "what to do?"

How is your schedule for tomorrow and Monday? Can you get off schedule and work your way back? Or do you need to stay within the one hour window?
