Does Diabetes Complicate Dental Surgery?

Hi,

I couldn't find a way to search, so apologies as I am sure this has been covered.

My Tyler Moo Moo needs a dental. The semi-specialist is running at around $1000 (!), and the other vet we sometimes use would be under $500. (Not even thinking about the Vetrinary Dentist my other (thyroid) rescue has an appointment with tomorrow...not sure I can swing that, but doing the consult).

If he seems an otherwise healthy, distinguished gentleman...what do you all think about a lower cost dental (with experienced vet, and pre-op labs)?
 
The deciding factor for me would be if the lower-cost option included dental x-rays. If they don't, and the semi-specialist does, I hate to say it, but it's probably better to go with the expensive option. Just a visual exam can miss major problems, and then you might as well not have done it at all...
 
I agree with Nan. Does Tyler Moo Moo have any other health issues? Make sure you get those pre-op labs, SO important!
 
No other health issues that I know of.

Sadly, I don't think the $1000 vet has xray capabilities. The $1400 + extractions vet does ...
 
My regular vet does all my cats dentals including extractions. I've had cats with just about every medical problem you can think of and I've never had a problem with using them in lieu of a specialist. My current boy Leo does have specialists for his medical conditions but his dentals are done with his regular vet. Lab work is always done before hand. Charges are about $300.00.
 
I'd call around......for $1000, that should include x-rays, all the pre-op tests and all the take home medications

China's last dental was $850

You can call vets offices and ask them to have the vet call you back (usually after hours) and discuss how they do their dentals. Without x-rays, you're missing over half the picture since a lot of the big problems are below the gumline
 
I agree with Chris-- call around. Dentals are always expensive, but for $1000+, you should get "the works" on a basic dental. The costs can rise above that if there are multiple extractions or complications during the procedure, of course. Maybe the estimates you are getting are the "high" estimates?

No x-ray, are you sure? Yes the pre-op lab work is terribly important. Just like your dentist a lot is determined once you open your mouth. Be vocal about after care pain, it's no fun at all for humans or cats.
 
I will ask if they do x-rays. My other cat had her whole mouth (all her teeth) extracted at the Vetrinary Dentist today and I was very impressed with the quality of the xrays and how many tooth roots they found. (But OMG, I have paid less for cars than I just put on my credit card this morning).

And, last night Tyler was limping. I have never seen him do that before, I am mostly keeping him in a small room so he can rest today. I think it's a bit better. Ugh!

Agreed. My vet is expensive and still coat about 800 including x-rays, and extraction, cleaning and filling. Plus after care pain meds. 1000 is too much without x-rays unless you are talking many extractions or extensive work. You should definitely have x-rays.
