Keytones Test Results

Good morning everyone - After trying numerous times to get a urine sample from Tigger using a plastic bag to cover his box I finally gave up on that idea. He would look at me almost as if saying, nice place to lay down on. So, this morning I saw him go to the box, I immediately removed the cover and just put the test stick under his urine stream and VOILA, it was so simple and he didn't even seem to notice. I'm attaching the results - and with this being my first time testing him, I just wanted your opinions. Looks to me like thankfully he's testing negative for keytones or maybe just a trace, but his glucose is HIGH. Is that because I am still trying to get him regulated? He's been on 2.25 (roughly as I'm eyeballing it since my syringe is for whole units) for 1.5 days now. Please let me know your thoughts. THANK YOU!!

As long as the results were taken exactly the amount of time the ketone strips instruct, most are 15 seconds, they should be accurate :). I'd ignore the glucose results since you are home testing. Glucose is going to show on those until he is under like 225 - 250 on a pet meter, that's when glucose spills over into urine (250+). If you've only been at the new dose for 1.5 days, definitely give it some more time. The sugar dance is a marathon, not a sprint, regardless of what insulin our kitties use.

Ok thank you! I guess the most important thing to look at are they keytones, correct?
 
Based on your SS to me it seems like 2 units is too high since you have either a flat or increasing curve.
I myself would try either 1 unit or 1 1/2 units.
The calipers are useful when you start going very low during a curve. That is not your case so far.

Yes it's the ketones you're actually looking at - what the glucose side will tell you is if glucose is spilling into the urine. When glucose shows too, kitty is above 'renal threshold' causing kidneys to have to work harder to deal with it. Home testing tells you the real story of actual glucose numbers.

@Larry and Kitties I never even thought that perhaps he should go lower on the dosage. The vet initially told me this week to go from 2 units AM/2 units PM to 3 units AM / 2 units PM but I did not feel comfortable with that. A few folks on the Lantus forum didn't agree either and suggested that I increase very slowly at .25 increments. Perform a curve again in the next couple of days to see where the 2.25 units AM/PM is putting him at.
