Frankie's civvie brother Teddy died from cancer on Sunday night. Literally in 5 minutes his condition changed and it was quite a distressing passing. I think he did it for me. I spoke to him that day and told him it was ok to go and he would never really leave me, but I was preparing him for the vet visit tonight. I think he was saving me the trauma of taking him to the vet knowing he wouldn't come back. Plus the fact that we were going to cancel our holiday this Saturday and he didn't want that. Anyway, my question is I am having him cremated and I have a couple of his whiskers and some fur as a keepsake. Does anyone else do that and what do you store them in so they are visible? Here is a picture of Teddy.

My pets all have urns with their collars hung over them. With all the fur and gunk on them from the last time they used them. All in proud display on my desk at home.

You do what you need to do to grieve. :bighug::bighug:

Sue

I am so sorry that Teddy has crossed the Bridge. He is finally pain free and no longer has to fight the cancer that was draining him (and you) in so many ways.

I kept some whiskers, nail clipping and a clipping of Tuxie's hair and at present I have them stored in one of the pill bottles I had for his meds and keep it next to his urn. I intend on getting some sort of glass locket, but so far almost 5 months later I have not progressed any further.

May your special memories of Teddy give you peace at this sad time.

I'm so sorry about your Teddy. I hope your wonderful memories of him will help to heal your heart. You are right, he will never leave you, and he will be waiting at the Bridge for the day you are reunited.

Fly free, beloved Teddy, travel safely on your journey to your new life at the Bridgecat_wings>o

I am so sorry about Teddy. At least you can take solace in knowing he is no longer in pain. I kept my kitty soul mate Mateo's ashes in a beautiful wooden urn. I hadn't actually thought to keep anything other than his collar, but he went downhill so fast. I had brought him to the ER and he never came home. I used to put his collar on top of the urn, but any time his bell would ring (if it fell or if I nudged/moved it), my other cat, Bella (who's still with me), would run searching for him. We both went through such a rough patch during that time, but we made it through. I think the website I used to order his urn had necklaces and other ways to carry/display fur or nail clippings. You do whatever makes you happy and brings you peace. Unfortunately, it's been 7 years now and I can't remember what website I went through.

I wish you and your family nothing but the best going forward. I feel your pain and I'll be sending some peaceful and healing energy your way. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm sorry about Teddy. :( I choose to bury my cats. That might seem weird to some, but it feels more appropriate to me. Only one cat was cremated, and that was because we ended up being out of town when he died (my sister was with him when he died). Even then, we buried the ashes. All of my babies are in flower beds with beautiful roses or gardenias or such growing in memory of them. I also like to have some type of memorial stone placed where they are (a grave marker, I suppose).

I have kept each of their collars/tags and a lock of hair, and for the one who died when we were away, we have a paw print pressed into clay. I also like to make a small photo album with photos of them. I do not have any of it on display. I have a special drawer where they are all kept along with all the nice cards I received from people when they died.

Hi Sue,

I'm so very sorry for your loss. My first thought was possibly a shadow box. I just googled it and they can be found on Amazon, Target, Michael's, etc. It looks like a frame but it's shaped like a box and you can display trinkets, pictures or anything you want. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. :bighug:

I keep two of my fur babies who were cremated in a cedar box with their names engraved on top in my living room side table. Never thought to keep a whisker or piece of fur but it would have been nice to have.
On the other hand it may have made me too sad to look at sometimes. They were two soul mate kitties that I had for about 20 years. I still get sad to look at the box.
I'm sorry you lost your boy Teddy.

I'm so sorry about Teddy. We lost our Tasha over the summer and it's still devastating.

We kept a handful of her things - her ashes were returned to us in a little wooden box, her dish, her collar, her clay pawprint, favorite toy, a trim of her hair. We've been on the lookout for a fancy box of some sort to store it all in. We found a box that fits but it doesn't feel quite right. And we keep it in our bedroom so I always know she's there but I'm not looking at the individual items unless I specifically open it.

I am very sorry about Teddy.

We've had all of our kitties cremated. We knew that we weren't going to live in one place for the rest of lives, and I couldn't stand the thought of ever leaving them behind. I've ordered lockets for some of my kitties from www.perfectmemorials.com They have pet-specific choices but of course any that feel right are the right ones. They can hold ashes, fur, flowers, whatever. I love having a bit of my kids with me. The people at Perfect Memorials were very helpful.

Sandi.

I'm so sorry you lost your dear Teddy. Sometimes they take the decision out of our hands because they know how hard it is for us to make it. :(

It's not a morbid question at all. I had some fur clipped from both of my Siberians when they crossed, and got some lovely little silver boxes to put it in, with their names engraved on them. Unfortunately, UCDVMTH lost Minka's fur, but Kisa's is in it's little silver box next to his wooden urn. Like Sandi, I had all my cats cremated so that when we move they will come with us. I have a little curio cabinet set up with their urns, paw prints, pictures and mementos of them.

Do you ever go to Harrod's? I'm sure they would have some little trinket box that would be suitable (I love that place and had to go there every time we were in London during the 3 years we lived in England). You can find pretty much anything there!

Also, not sure what would be available to ship to the UK, but I just googled "small glass boxes for display" and a lot of nice choices came up. Try it.
Fly free, Teddy, and land softly. :rb_icon:

We kept a clipping of fur from my mom's cat, Elmo. She was originally my sister's cat. She died 4 months after my mom. We buried the fur right on top of my mom's grave. She really only liked my mom anyway so we thought it was a good idea. I have paw prints from my cat, Bubba. I have my dog's collar on top of his urn and even after 5 years it smells just like him. All these things are a comfort to many people.
Your Teddy was so handsome and those whiskers were so long! I think it's a great that you saved some.
I'm sorry for your loss.

There's nothing morbid about this at all. You do what makes you feel best. We have urns and cedar boxes all over the house but when we went through multiple losses I moved them next to my side of the bed. I will say I'm disappointed with our urns because they're fading and cracking. The cedar boxes are really nice. Our vet offers hair and even paw prints. We're all nuts anyways, who cares what we do.

I'm sorry it was Teddy's time. It sounds like he passed quickly. I hope his journey to the Bridge was safe.

I don't think it is morbid to keep mementos of our fur-kids. We have their cremains, and also fur from their favorite brushes. My last wishes are to be cremated then buried with the ashes and fur of my fur-kids.

My beloved childhood cats both have little urns with engraved name tags around them at my parents' house, and so does our cat we had when I was older.

I will keep them forever.

When (gulp) my two fluffies have to go, I will do the same thing, except I would like to have a special little box for each with a whisker and snip of fur, and a favourite photo lining each one.

I'll try and post a pic of our cedar boxes. You get a name engraved on the top and they are top quality. Just looked, our urns are crumbling.

So sorry for your loss. I had a cat for 20 years and when she died I had her cremated. I keep her in a wooden box with photos that I made. I also got her actual paw prints tattooed on my foot.

@Cherish Gallagher A tatoo! That's because you're the only one here under the age of 50. Actually I think it's very sweet. Everything from your black and white avatar to your posts screams love.
Our Border Collie Hannah had a wooden box to get her bowls off the floor. I'm going to make a hope chest out of it. Old guys have lots of tools. Or did someone in traffic call me a tool? Must be memory loss. I just checked, Wikipedia actually has an entry for Tramp Stamp.

Hehehe thanks for the compliments. :D

Thought maybe I crossed a line there. Nice pyjamas, just like mine which I wear WAY too much. Like Hugh Hefner but only one wife and no hepatitis C, D, E and F from that dirty pool.
Okay, back on topic. Time for me to log off.
