My 8 yr old Maine Coon, Ozzy was diagnosed last Tuesday. He had been pottying on the floor, stopped grooming himself and just wasnt acting right. Vet visit revealed BG over 400, elevated WBC, crappy CXR, "strange" fat deposits, irritation in part of his bowel and an irritated ear. Whew! Vet said to continue feeding him dry Purina Pro Plan, give him 2 units of Humulin N and come back in 2 days. Thur, BG 343, I asked about switching to canned food, she said "if you want". I did. Researched and found low carb brands. Sat bought a glucometer to check him. So far: Sat BR @ 7am, BG @ 2pm 122; Premeal BG 171 (held insulin for tonight)
Sun: 6am Premeal 211, feed BR & gave 2 u, rechecked BG @9am 309; 6pm Premeal 213, feed supper....should I give him any insulin?, if so how much?
I found a scale but it is for Levimir or Lantus not Humulin.

BTW, there is no scale... Cats react differently to different amounts which is why it's safer to star low.

BG this morning was 183 before breakfast so I gave him 1 unit Humulin N. Got his sample the first try YAY!
well done! Now 183 is not a very high preshot, so please test again around 4 or 5 hours after the shot to ensure it's not too low.

If you could set up the spreadsheet too, that would be awesome. If you have trouble setting it up, let me know and I'll tag someone who can set it up for you.

Sorry, can't had to go to work. Just hope he is ok, if I had listened to the vet, I would not have checked his BG and given him 3 units. Thank you all for helping me.

1 is probably safe but it's hard to say for sure without data. For sure safer then 3 units though!!! Are you using a human meter?

Yes I am using a human meter. Had a terrible time getting blood this morning, UGH! But I finally got it. Pre breakfast BG 146, no insulin this morning YAY

Next time its a shootable number but under 200 you may consider lowering to half a unit. Say 175-220. Next day off try to get some mid cycle numbers. Our if you can get a +4-5 tonight that would be helpful.

I thought about giving half a unit but since it is Humulin N I was afraid, especially since I have to go to work. He will be seeing a new vet on Monday, hopefully changing to Prozinc.

Oh I wouldn't have recommended a shot today.... I think you made the right call skipping. I said try half of a unit when it's around 200.

Love your avatar! Maine Coons are so beautiful. They are very intelligent! Coral got so used to testing 8-10 times per day that she would know when I set the meter by her and rub her ear that she was going to have a "pokey" time! So sweet! Keep up the good work! Don't know much about Humulin but others do. Best to you, cat purrrrsss and paws crossed. Best to you and healing to those in need, Kathe and "The Girls"

BG 124 pre supper this evening. How long does it take to consider them in remission, he sees a new vet on Monday and I cant wait to show them his chart. He hasnt required any insulin yesterday or today? Also, he is eating a 3 oz can of Fancy Feast twice a day. Is that enough food, he would never eat as much as the can recommends but I worry that he might be hungry.

14 days without insulin we call remission. How much a cat eats depends. I have a cat that barely eats 1 can. My other cat ate 4-5.

You may want to post on a daily basis or interim basis on the Caninsulin/Vetsulin and N/NPH Forum (Others please check me but I think this is the correct forum.) These folks will be familiar with the insulin you are using. This type of posting also limits the length of the postings to the current event of the day. Best, Kathe
