Fasting & Giving Insulin

Hi guys,

When our diabetic babies need to be fasted for surgery so cannot eat breakfast, do you still give insulin in the morning at half the dose? Merry goes in for his dental on Tuesday & the vet said to give him half his insulin dose Tuesday morning but I didn't think we should give insulin if they aren't eating. Or maybe because it's half the dose it's ok? The stressful day will definitely keep his sugars up so maybe that's why half is ok but I don't know.

I would say it depends on how high it is. If it's high like 300 I'd definitely give at least a half dose.

@JanetNJ Thanks for your reply. Most of Merry's numbers are in the 300's. We're still trying to get his diabetes regulated & hoping the dental will help since he has some bad teeth in there.

Do remember that some cats can go low after a vet visit. I'd test a couple times after the dental. I hope it goes well and the dental helps.

Thanks @Red & Rover (GA) :) As soon as he gets home I'll test him to see what's going on. I won't leave him at the vet any longer than I need to.
Merry is going to be so upset with missing his breakfast & that alone will stress him out. He's on a pretty good feeding schedule now & he howls if I'm just a few minutes late. :)

Your welcome. With how high your cats numbers are I wouldn't worry at all. I might even do 1.5 or 2.

Merry's dental is tomorrow morning. Please send him lots of pawsitive vibes that all goes well <3

Prayers for you and Merry! I am wondering if this is something I should discuss with my vet. My cat is 12 and never had a dental and we are struggling to get him regulated, I just didn't know if it was safe to be put under when their sugar isn't stable.

@Kris10S in another thread I started last week I think, I had mentioned that we were waiting to get Merry regulated before doing his dental & someone mentioned that one of the main reasons cats come out of remission (which Merry did in May) or have high BG is because of dental issues so it might be something worth checking out.

That is my worry, that maybe this all stemmed from years of eating too much, steroid treatments for allergies off and on and maybe overdue for a cleaning. Right before his DX he had a large bump on his tail that suddenly grew. We went in, they took cells only to tell us they couldn't tell what it was. SO many emotions of a possible cancer diagnosis and tail amputation. We decided on a biopsy and they were going to take as much as possible and see what it was and then go from there. Before that they needed to do blood work and mentioned doing his teeth at the same time since he's be out, that's when we found out about the diabetes. Also, when we switched to a low carb diet the bump shrunk leading everyone to believe it was just a fatty tumor! After all that and now insulin I think the dental is worth a shot!

Merry did well during his dental :) I'll be picking him up in a few hours, he's still on IV fluids for the rest of the day. He had two very rotten premolars (lower back left, upper back right) and the gums around those teeth are really ulcerated so no wonder he was pawing at his face & drooling. His previous person thought it was a quirk that he flicked his tongue around & pawed at his face, d'oh! She loved him but wasn't very cat smart. As soon as she told me about his tongue & pawing when she surrendered him to rescue I knew he needed a dental. Poor kitty. His BG today while at the vet has been 15-18 which is pretty good and I'm glad he didn't go hypo or spike too high. I'll update again after he's home & relaxing. I'm just relieved he did well <3
