So I managed to get a sample ..he had his insulin at 10am. I tested at 1:20. His reading is 254. What does this mean? Is it high or normal ? If its high does that mean he needs more insulin ? When is the recommended time to test?

Good job getting that first test! I remember how nerve wracking it is! 254 is high but we will find the right dose to get it down.... It's been about 3 1/2 hours since the dose.... It may come down a bit further as Novolin usually peeks 4-6 hours after the shot. See if you can get another reading at 5 hours after (3pm).

I know you are on Novolin, what dose did you give? How many units?

Tonight before the shot at like 930, test, then feed, then shoot at 10.
Now that you are home testing, please set up a spreadsheet so we can help track your numbers and give you dosing advice.

Let us know if you need help setting it up.

Hi, hes on 2 units twice a day. Ill check out ur link for the spreadsheet. Thank u for ur help !
:). No problem. Once you have more readings (preshots and get some mid cycle numbers when you can) it will be easier to give advice. While 254 is still too high, it's decent if the starting number was 500, ya know? But if the starting number was say, 300, then we might say to increase the dose to get it down farther. Update tonight after the 3pm and preshot and let's see what's happening. :)

Oh my lord..that looks soo confusing. Is there a way to create a spreadsheet with pen and paper?
Haha. It's not as hard as it looks. I'll tag someone that will set it up for you. Do you use a computer or a phone /tablet to sign on?

The reason we like the spreadsheet is because it's easy to see trends as it's color coded, and by putting a link to it in your signature we can all see real time updates every time you enter a new reading. You can see mine if you click on CC'S spreadsheet in my signature.

Don't panic, and don't give more insulin, unless it's shot time. The blood glucose will fall when the insulin has "kicked in" and rise again as it's "leaving". That's why curves are called curves. When graphed the numbers typically and should (depending on your insulin type) make an actual curve. As you get more data, it'll be easier for you and others to see what's happening and if he need more/less insulin.

He had his shot 8 hours ago. When i tested it at 1pm (3 hours after insulin) it was 254. So r u telling me its not going to continue to rise until his next shot?

It is going to rise until his next shot. And depending on the time it takes for it to become active it could rise a bit even after the shot. I use a different insulin that take about 2 hours to kick in, and I've had numbers go up for +2 readings, so don't let it bother you :)

It's OK. It's not unusual. Most cats are in the 300's and 400's before getting regulated. We'll get her down eventually.

Ok..i feel a little better that u guys are telling me its not unusual. I feel so bad for my Toby for sticking him with all these needles today..but I know its all for his benefit..now I feel incredibly guilty for not doing this sooner.

I waited about a month before I started home testing. Until one day when I got home from work and he was very lethargic... Turns out he was on too high a dose at the start, so I know how you feel. But really their ears don't have many nerve endings and it's not as painful as you might think or Toby might lead you to believe. Mine will still put up a fight every so often, but he's never been big on having his ears messed with.

But don't feel guilty. You are now doing everything you can to help your extra sweet Toby :)

Give a low carb treat after each test and he will soon not mind it at all. Just be sure to do the edges and not the vein so they barely feel it.
