Hi there! I am trying to regulate Emily. This has been a back and forth process for us, for various reasons. She is supposed to get her PM shot around 7:30 this evening. She hasn't eaten too much today, but at last check (about 2 hours ago) she was at 190. So my question is, even if she doesn't eat before her shot is scheduled, but her numbers are still high, do I give her insulin? Basic question I'm sure, but I need confirmation on how to proceed. Thank you. Mary

What insulin are you using? Vetsulin, for example is usually fairly rapid in onset and kitty needs to eat well 20 to 30 minutes before the shot. Lantus is fairly slow in onset so you'd have a couple of hours after the shot to get some food into her.

Using Lantus at the moment...not sure if it is the right insulin for her. We are going to test her now, and see where she is at. Hopefully she will eat a bit so we can give her a shot if need be.

With Lantus a small meal of a tablespoon or two should be enough. Those blues today are decent numbers.

Thanks so much...we are trying hard!! :) She just tested at 209 and I have these freeze dried chicken only treats that she LOVES. I think they are ok to give her, so I sprinkled them on her food and she gobbled up the whole bowl (well, it was probably just a few tablespoons, but that is typically how she eats. So, we gave her the shot. We will test her before we head to bed in a few hours to see where she is at. Thanks so much for replying and giving us the confidence we needed!

Glad I could help! :)

UGH! Any thoughts on these numbers this morning?? This is so aggravating! Just when you think you are getting a handle on things.....
She rebounding from the blues yesterday. Just stay the course with the current dose. Bouncing (rebounding) can last up to 6 cycles before numbers drop again to show the true effect of a dose.

Since you're using Lantus, I suggest you post over on the Lantus forum where there a lot of very experienced people. You've expressed reservations about whether Lantus is good for your kitty. They can help you figure all this out.
