Starting dose

I have ideas of what I think I should do for my starting dose but I'm curious what you guys think. CC will have her shot in about two and a half hours. It's tricky because clearly her body is trying to work.... Lots of fluctuations. So what do you think? I'll be able to get a +4 and probably a +8 if I need it tonight.

I'm not the dosing expert, but I thought since you are my expert ;) I might try to reverse it on you and see what you think of my suggestion?

It looks like she's still doing dropping on her own, so I wouldn't want to put her in a big nadir and cause bouncing. Fabby seems to do pretty well at .5 units at these numbers, but perhaps you even want to start smaller at .25 just to see if that gets C.C.'s body back on track where she was....

Look at you talking about low nadirs and bouncing... Good job taking the bouncing into consideration. See, you learned all this stuff quickly! My vet had originally told me 1 unit, but I was like, yeah, no. haha I thought that might be too much until the preshots come down or I'd have a bounce... Probably eventually it will be 1 or more, but not yet. My own thought was to try .5 and see what happens, so we are generally thinking the same thing. If it brings her down a little more than I want I can back it down to a skinny .5 or .25. I don't mind staying up and steering if I need to. I have a week and a half until school starts again, so I have a little more flexibility and testing time until then when I'll be out of the house during the day and need a bit more sleep at night.

I kind of wish if she was going to go off the rails she would have done it in July so I'd have more time at home to get her back down. She's so inconsiderate. ;) lol
 
I was thinking that starting at 0.25 is the safest way to go as well. I tried to go too much too fast, and it possibly pushed Lou higher. Now I've had the hardest time getting him back down. I know CC is at higher levels right now, but it's possible a little insulin assistance may do wonders. :bighug:

ETA: I see you started off at 0.5. I should have checked that first, but since she's in the 300s, I don't think that's a bad dose either.

I agree with the .5.....as high as she is, I think you'd do better to start there and see how it goes

We're usually a little more aggressive with cats that are trying for a 2nd remission....I don't want to discourage you because we have seen it happen, but a 2nd remission is really harder than the 1st one
 
All the best Janet! My experience with vetsulin tells me you may need a bit higher at her current numbers but 0.5 would be a good start. I'm curious to see how CC responds to this dose. Would be great if she can come down fast.

I agree and will probably go up to 1 on Monday night (I'll be out during the day) and most likely eventually higher as I try to push her back into greens. That's not going to be as easy once I'm back in work. I wish she had gone out of remission on July when I'm home! Ah well. Right now I'm trying to get the preshots down so I can then get her low without a bounce. This mornings preshot is 50 points lower than last night so hopefully she will continue to go in that direction.

At least it's less scary the second time around!

It's still so puzzling why CC suddenly needs insulin again. Wonder if there's any statistics on this or any research done anywhere. Do you think the dental had somehow contributed to this?
You read CC's pattern very well in the past so I'm pretty sure you'll be able to gauge the dose she needs. Fingers and paws crossed she'll be regulated soon and goes into remission again.

It's possible. It creeped up a bit after into the mid 100's.. Maybe her pancreas just got tired. Maybe it's the eclipse. Who knows. Lok

she popped out of remission suddenly, but part of her problem is that she gained a TON of weight which I hadn't realized. She wasn't moving much because she has terrible arthritis. I took her for the wellness panel before her dental and she was 16.63 lbs. Last year she was 12.5, so..... haha once on adequen she has been moving more, and in the two months since that wellness panel she's down to 16.19 lbs, so we are going in the right direction. I'm watching her calories more now too... I knew she gained weight but I hadn't realized it was THAT much. she's probably do best to get down to about 13 lbs. (She is a big cat for a female, not just her belly. haha)
 
Just a thought did cc have any steroids around the time of the dental.? Lila had to have steroids when she had hers as she had breathing issues while she was under anaesthetic. It apparantly is significant in triggering diabetes. It certainly seemed to with Lila. Her dental was 2 months before she was actually diagnosed but she probably had diabetes much earlier than that we just didn't realise.
 
If I was better knowledged in pet Meyers I'd weigh in some advice but I think these guys got it covered! But collectly reading the replies it seems like there's some good advice on dosing. Kitty weight though, I know that struggle. If it helps catnip and a shallow box helped cloud. He loses his mind and runs for two hours in circles.

No she didn't have steroids.

I do give catnip. :) she's lost nearly half a lb in the last 8 weeks now that she can move better... So hopefully that trend will continue. I'm tempted to get a pet scale. She's overweight and my cat Julie is underweight. Wish I could move 3 lbs from cc and give them to Julie.
