Hi again, our first week went pretty well. At the vet's suggestion I gave 1 unit 2 times a day and because of a prescription diet no food change to start.
We went back yesterday to have his blood tested 6 hours after his shot and BG was 488. :(
Good news was no weight loss!
The vet suggested going up to 2 units but because of some of the reading I'd done here I asked if 1/2 was ok. She was agreeable. I'm hoping that was the right thing to do.
Because of other things I'd read here I asked her to check into the carb content in his food, the difference between wet and dry is significant. I've begun to slowly mix some wet in to try to transition. (Hill's prescription CD)
I learned how to test at home and purchased what I needed.
So, we're moving forward and he seems more like himself.

Question- In the dinner time frenzy last night I accidentally left the insulin out of the fridge for about 2 hours. Please tell me I didn't ruin it?!

I think the insulin is fine. Did it feel cool to the touch two hours later?

May I ask why you're using the prescription food? My boy was on Hill's wet Z/D for allergies and the carb count was like 32%! I was hesitant to switch but he's still on 2.5 mg prenisolone every other day so we switched to low carb Fancy Feast. So far so good on the allergies not coming back. The prescription food is not the best for diabetic cats unfortunately.

Thank you so much for responding vbc. The house was hectic and I panicked so I put it back in the fridge without checking. Such an amateur move.
He's on Hill's CD because of sand in his bladder. The carb % in the dry is 40 and in the wet 6, crazy difference. I'm slowly mixing wet and dry together to start the transition, luckily he's cooperating.

Hi, my Tigger was on the Hills C/D when he became blocked and I feel in my heart that the prescription food is what caused his diabetes. Prior to that, he never had the problems he has now. I wish I would have found this forum when he was first diagnosed because I would have tried to switch the food before doing the insulin. When he was on the Hills, his glucose was reaching close to 600! Even on the prescription wet food for sensitive stomaches. I would never feed him that again. He's now on Fancy Feast low carb and Dr Elseys CleanProtein. He's still having stomach issues from time to time and I'm struggling to get his numbers at a better place but I'm not giving up. Thanks to the wonderful people on this forum I'm receiving great advice. Hopefully you can transition him slowly to a better food. Good luck!

The only real test to know whether or not the insulin is still good is when you monitor their numbers if the insulin is old or not effective from being left out his numbers will be high where they wer normal before. If you haven't bought a meter two home test blood glucose I would suggest doing so as soon as possible. It's the only way I found out what was really going on with my Tigger. You get good at it and they get used to the routine. I knew my vial of vetsulin went bad from age because his numbers showed it.

Hi LinMcG,

I have 2 crystals boys and a different diabetic girl, and then several with no specific food needs. I understand the pain of needing to really manage the dietary as the first priority.
On Dr. Lisa's food list Hills C/D wet shows with 23-28 carbs depending on which flavor. May I ask were you got the 6 carbs from?
I have been looking into how to switch my 3 dietary needs cats all to the same food and be cost effective. I made a spreadsheet and everything of all the foods listed on the list that both had low phosphorus and low carbs. As currently the crystals boys food is high carb, low phosphorus and my diabetic cat's food is low carb, high phosphorus. So exact opposites. I guess I'm lucky that they don't have each other's issues, and I can still quarantine them off and feed them separately and cheaply, because combined is expensive. (For 3 cats anyway.)
Here's Dr. Lisa's food list, but if you ever need it again, it's in a sticky at the top of this forum:

Thanks for the info AlphaCat, we looked in the nutrition info. Maybe it was % rather than grams? Bandit has always been a dry food cat so I' think I'll try to continue on this path until he is comfortable with wet and then move on to finding the lowest carb option.

I am a newbie so I don't have many stats yet and I'm still learning about all this. And on Monday I learned Franklin's body rejects Fancy Feast Beef Classic and Sheba Beef Pate, in every room in the house! But after reading on here about switching to the low carb food and that many were using Fancy Feast, I have switched to that. And it seems like I am seeing a drop in numbers. I have his sister on FF now too. They are 7.5 years old and were always on dry food--Science Diet for Indoor Cats until 12/11/2016 when I switched them to Purina One because both were losing weight and were not eating as much of the SD. They loved Purina One but they both love the canned food even more.

My food log started on 8/10 but I didn't starting home testing until 8/16. I was mixing wet and dry Science Diet W/D from evening of 8/4, when he was diagnosed. FYI.

8/16 AMPS 444 PMPS 455 Science Diet W/D dry mixed with can W/D
8/17 AMPS 401 PMPS 448 Started mixing Fancy Feast with the W/D dry
8/18 AMPS 418 PMPS 207 Began only Fancy Feast
8/19 AMPS 301 PMPS 332 Fancy Feast
8/20 AMPS 227 PMPS 235 Fancy Feast
8/21 AMPS 110 PMPS no strips Fancy Feast plus Sheba Turkey Pate
8/22 AMPS+3 250 PMPS 167 Fancy Feast plus Sheba Turkey Pate
823 AMPS 203 Fancy Feast

I did purchase one and will be testing today.
Lantus (glargine) is not as fragile as some of the others and is designed to be OK at room temperature for about 28 days. We usually recommend storing in the fridge (on a shelf, not the door compartments) to extend the life, so 2 hours sitting on the kitchen should not have ruined it :). One time I put the used syringe in the fridge and the insulin back on top of the fridge (where the syringes were going). Luckily I went to the fridge within 30 minutes and wondered why I put the syringe in there and then realized, the insulin wasn't there, it was on top .
